Dark Star
April 5, 1969
Avalon Ballroom

Heady transition from MOTM (Jer's fuzz tone is perfect out of the transition) and crazy post-verse buildup. Otherworldly sounds coming from everyone. The interplay between Jerry and Mickey after 14:30 is beautiful. This one is big indeed.
Mountains of the Moon

Avalon Ballroom

This one is huge, folks. Crazy heady acoustic solo accompanied by background psychedelic rumblings. Acoustic/electric transition and the ensuing jam are brilliant. Phil takes off and leads us into a hot dark star. His bass work in this last minute is so clearly influenced by late-60s Ethiopian jazz (e.g. Mulatu Astatke) it's crazy. Such an intelligent heady groove.
The Other One

Chateau d'Herouville

Channeling the powers of the solstice that night in rural France. Pigpen's tone is from another galaxy.

Chateau d'Herouville

The perfect mood for an impromptu summer solstice jam sesh in the French countryside. Heady.
Playin' In The Band

Beat Club

Uncompromising is right. The Dead clearly saw how Heady this crowd was after the first PITB. By the second one, the whole band goes off the rails and straight to deep space. Jerry's mind-melting guitar tone takes no prisoners. This is hot, raw, juicy, unfettered '72 Dead in its headiest form. The Proto-Veneta PITB. Anyone who stumbles upon this will be eternally rewarded.
