Johnny B. Goode
April 3, 1989
Civic Arena

Fun MIDI solo from Jerry that's answered by an equally hot keyboard solo from Brent. One of the better 80s versions.

When Push Comes to Shove
April 1, 1988
Meadowlands Arena

The band takes their time and digs into this one more than usual. You can tell they're having a lot of fun.

Friend of the Devil
July 24, 1987
Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Stadium

The only thing more mind-blowing than this version is the fact that no one has nominated it yet.

Space
May 6, 1981
Nassau Coliseum

Coming out of a pretty typical Drums, Space develops into an extended, very melodic full-band groove that grows carefully into a hot Other One.

C. C. Rider
Oct. 13, 1980
Warfield Theater

Aggressive yet patient and focused.

Estimated Prophet
March 21, 1981
Rainbow Theatre

Seriously underrated. Jerry rips a hole in the jam with some probing, angry lead parts that Brent and Bob navigate with creativity and grace. The new Dave's Picks should give this version some shine.
The Wheel
May 1, 1981
Hampton Coliseum

The wasted jam potential of The Wheel has never been more evident than in this version. They absolutely float from Space into a beautiful reading of the main song, begin to find some exiting new space, then gently ripcord into Wharf Rat. Why couldn't they ever just let The Wheel stretch out?
He's Gone
May 1, 1981
Hampton Coliseum

There's nothing wrong with this performance but it sort of lets the wind out after a hot 4-song stretch.
Lost Sailor -> Saint of Circumstance
May 1, 1981
Hampton Coliseum

Jerry plays some really lovely lines at the end of Lost Sailor just before triggering a bit of fuzz and wah. Phil takes the hint and steps up in a big way, creating a nice pocket before Saint. Cool version.
Touch of Grey
Oct. 28, 1990
Zenith

Triumphant performance with a very full sound from the expanded lineup. Vince adds a lot of great color and Phil keeps the energy high throughout.
