When it comes to the late 80's, shows like this one seem to slip through the cracks between fan favorites like 4/1/88 and 7/4/89. I'd say this one is easily
...
in the same league, but it falls short of the consistency required to make it as famous as some of its neighbors. Fall '88 is always rewarding! There are some great jammy moments in this show during songs like Franklin's and Mobile where Jerry, Phil, and Bill just simultaneously throw in these rapid runs and leave everyone else playing catchup. The LTGTR > Stranger > Franklin's opener is really nice. That jam during the last couple minutes of Stranger gets so soupy that it feels like the band almost says "Take it easy there Jerry, save some of that for the rest of the show!" before wrapping up the song off and moving into a brightly shining Franklin's. The drummers chop out a gritty Walkin' Blues, Captain Trips performs a stunning Believe It Or Not, Mobile is sweet, Dupree's Diamond Blues is snappy, and they go all-out in Jack Straw.
The first half of the second set is alright, but I don't think it's the highlight by any means. Victim gets good and murky, but at this point in the year they were clearly still working on Foolish Heart. The second half of the second set is a lot more impressive. Brent nails his number, they roll Stella Blue around beautifully, and Brokedown Palace is a fitting encore to close out what would be the Grateful Dead's last performance in Texas. The mix is excellent - there's not as many soundboards of 1988 as we'd all like, and many of the ones we do have are subpar in comparison to years like '89 or '90. There's a little hiss in the opening song, but overall this SBD of Dallas '88 is clean and really well-balanced. I'd like to give this one 5 stars, but Weir skuffs a few lyrics and there are a couple jams that sort of loiter around without anyone taking the risks that so often help these songs reach the next level. I give it a 4.4 out of 5. Brent must've had a fun birthday performing a solid tour closer with the guys! This one is well worth a couple hours of your time.

Noteworthy things: Bobby's bizarre MIDI guitar sounds through the first 2/3rds of "Dupree's", which eventually yield to conventional guitar ... for the final part of the song.
(Despite common misconceptions, there was definitely MIDI guitar before its official supposed debut on 4/17/89, but it was Bobby with the MIDI, not both guitarists)
The 1st set "Believe It or Not". A relatively rare 1988 "Wang Dang Doodle".
The demented "Happy Birthday" ... aaaaand .... not much else.

...
in set 2 ballad spot... great tune -- thx jerry for that killer "let me show how i love you" crescendo...

I had gotten a 3 day suspension from work, so my buddies and I road tripped from Iowa City down to Dallas for the show.
Many memorable moments, like arguing ... in the van whether we could have open beer in the vehicle, so to settle the question we pulled up and asked a drunk sitting on the curb outside the bar. "He man, is it like, cool to have open beer in the car in Texas?" He assured us it was fine.
The show itself was sweet. Dancing a two step with a guy and his wife next to us. Lots of smiles!

...and to "joboyaquer" (did I get that right?) I agree that "Franklins" isnt presented effectively vocally, but it is NOT because Bobby doesnt "get" that

there's no chorus after "...listen to the music play" but rather because Jerry fumbles the lyrics and sings that verse out of sequence. Actually, I think Bob was trying to save it with the chorus, but no one else jumped in.
Anyway, very nice show overall from a high point in the bands long career. "Believe it or Not" is a gem IMHO, and shouldve stayed in the repertoire.
Sure, its simple musically, but so is "Standing on the Moon" and many other Jerry ballads.
And finally, I must say that I liked "Wang" and "Victim" to open set II, and the rest of the set also has a nice groove to it and plenty of tempo changes to keep you on your feet. Tight playing from the boys all night. 4 star setlist, 4 star sound, 4 star performance.

Drove up from Austin. The weather was fantastic, sunny and maybe 70 with no humidity. We drove right past the venue with the parking lot happening and

then ran out of gas getting to north Dallas to pick up my buddy's girlfriend. We got back late and missed openers. I was steamed. Anyway didn't get dosed until halftime when some guy walked by me in the lobby advertising "musical notes." It was Brent's birthday and he was toasted, fell off his piano bench. I liked the Woman Are Smarter and Franklin's Tower. The Brokedown Palace was fitting as it was the final show of that tour. Not at all bad first Dead show!

Gans played some tunes from this show on gd hour somtime in 90 maybe.... I taped it off the radio and replayed it maybe a few hundred times before acquiring
...
new dead tunes. Thus my first impression of the dead was this show heard at high volumes in a frat house pool room. Duprees, Wang Dang Doodle, Jack Straw, Watchtower, Stella, and Sugar Mag.....since then I have been initiated into the deadhead community after quiting college temporarily to go on tour. Coming back to this show after years and years makes me realize how magic a first listen of the dead can be for ripe ears. 10-21-88...has its moments of blue lightning and whisky, tragedy, and revelation. What strikes me about this recording is the Jack Straw. It still gives me goosebumps some eons later after logging hours and hours and hours and hours and hours of dead. It hooked me: who was this character? Soon I would be occupying Robert Hunter's alternative universe.

1st Set: A chilled out pokey "LTGTR" opens up the final evening of Fall '88. The rhythm's kosher on "Stranger" but there's not much fire behind the performance. The lyrical presnetation of "Franklin's" is too passive for my liking - words are forgotten and Bobby still doesn't get that there is no chorus after 'let the music play' Bobby's got a good voice on "Walkin" but it's all still too innocuous. Kinda cool metpahor I'm thinkin of... a wheel/wrench haning by a string off an offroading car... however the bumps in this version aren't nearly that fun. Let's face it, "Believe" is too bland musically to be a survivor. "Memphis Blues" is fine but a bit too loose...the song discusses individual ennui and therefore it should be played with rigidity and tightness. Jerry's so funny... hearing savor reciting the words 'sweet sweet...jelly's so good' so much depth to his well of feeling. The version's standard. Alright, Mr. "Jack." Phil's pitter-pat keeps the version alive through the dull moments in the 3's but everyone comes alive 4 and beyond. Nice but not an all-timer.
2nd Set: The first note out of Phil's instrument during the tune-up is the first note of "Dark..." yea yea yea, we've still got about a year til that one is allwoed to take flight again. Anyways, a morbid "Happy Birthday" is offered the youngster...a whopping 36 today. "Happy Birthday Brentski." Welcome back Mr. "Wang" It's not as slinky as some of the best versions but I like how acquainted Bobby is with the tune. He snarls it with an undeniable strength. Hmmm...I thought they would continue with a partying tune like 'China,' but instead Bobby chooses to infuse our bones with his most deliberately evil tune, "Victim." It's a fair run through but filled with plenty of sound effects from Brent. Seemingly, it cannot be played unless "Foolish" follows. Unfortunately, Jerry's barely a vocal presence, the words are in his mind, he just can't project. Gotta dig when Brent uses the harpsichord (around 6:00) The song appears to wind down around 8:00 but Jerry and the percussionists stretch it out and manage to get through the final verse. The past couple of shows reviewed should convey that Jerry is not at the top of his game. Moving on, "Man Smart" lacks fire, too tame and lethargic the light, uptempo drumming at 6:30. "Drums/Space" pass without novelty though the latter involved some hyper twirling from myself. Brent gets the chance to sing his reassuring lullabye "Take You Home." It's better than the last time I heard it. Then comes the riff and a pretty good version of "GDTRFB." It definitely gets those feet swinging setting up the Phillerific "Watchtower" that follows. Everything comes together in this liltingly lovely "Stella." An infectious but choppy "Sugar" closes out the show. Sirens and loud cheers await their re-entrance...
Fittingly, the tour ends with a fine "Breakdown."

After seeing the band for a solid 15 years at the time of this show sadly, it was my last Grateful Dead show.. What wonderful memories.
