I think you can hear Jerry say, "What?" after the person in the crowd yelled Wipeout! It's amazing that a completely unrehearsed song could come out that well, great job by the drummers! Jerry and Jorma's leads are incredible, excellent recording- what a gem!

Nice stuff here, they are all loose as a goose. Garcia does ask for request "wipe Out" was called out. Poof they played Wipe Out. Freebird and Stairway to Heaven had yet to be written...imagine that.


Good recording here and enjoy them jamming together. Jorma and Jack were spreading their Hot Tuna wings at this time. Nice thick and gooey 60's rock!

I just came across this show on www.deadoftheday.com today.

The Dead played this show with the Airplane. Further, the weird mix of tunes makes it a real treat. The best is the Wipe Out; I always knew Jerry had a little fondness for Dick Dale, and it comes through here by way of this Safaris tune.

I just saw a photo in the recent Mojo (with Debbie Harry on the cover) of Al Kooper backstage at The Matrix with Garcia, Jack Casady and Mountain Girl. Al Kooper is showing Jerry something on guitar (Kooper says it was "I Wanna Hold Your Hand"). So I'm wondering if this may have been that show?

... but like the dude who even said that Chet Helms didn't even remember it, I can't say for sure.

Being from San Francisco, what I can say is that back in those days I used to go to most of the shows that the Airplane were on the bill of, especially when the Dead or Janis were on the same bill.

Since this was just a month or so after Altamont, I'm pretty sure Spencer Dryden was still with the Airplane and not Joey Covington.

This was around the time when groups like Sha Na Na were trying to revive the late fifties and early sixties sound, and I thought it was a bunch of shit at the time.

40 years ago today the DEAD were foolin' around at the Family Dog with the Jefferson Airplane.

Here's the show/rehearsal.

Not your standard set list you'd expect at a Jefferson Airplane/GRATEFUL DEAD show. But most people at this show couldnt' tell if the they were singing in key, or playing in time or in tune.

Really, why listen to this crap? The boys are at their drunken worst here. Hardly any jamming and everything is really sloppy.

Probably the most unique, improbable, laughable and downright grinnin session I ever heard played and I smiled every second.
Worth the effort to listen for any true deahead who just loves to remember the Boys were capable of playin anything at anytime when the mood was right.

Don't know what that last guy was talkin about(2005- maybe his opinion has shifted,just don't know?)but this is probably in my top ten gems found on Archive so far!!!If the down-homeness of it don't get ya then the drumming will!!I've never heard drum machines that sound as fast as the first couple of tracks!!This may be drunken jammin but hell whats wrong with that!Check it out!!!

im really diggin this stuff how many versions of these songs are you gonna find the dead rippin it, garage band stuff beautiful none the less, jorma rocks, sounds pretty good, worth a download for more than sentimental value

The version of "Johnny B. Goode" here has more fire and rock and roll energy than any version the Dead ever did alone. The overall feel of the set is frantic and speedy, and stimulants are probably at work, but everyone's playing is fun and sharp. A regular dance party. It's always nice to hear Jorma let it rip.

Nothing wrong here--tasty sound and a nice vibe. But if you don't think Help Me Rhonda is a rock and roll classic you might not appreciate the point of the exercise. Mickey and Bill manage to keep out of each other's way.

I don't care what anyone thinks... stupid drunkend garage music can be pretty darned entertaining sometimes. One should also note that Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna) is also part of this inspired lunacy. I love the surf groove that goes right into "Big Railroad Blues."

I would've really liked to hear this jam if it weren't so over-recorded. Maybe the soundman was partying with the boys that night.

This Dick Latvala discovered Family Dog jam session features some of the sloppiest(drunken?) playing and singing I've ever heard on a Dead recording. Joey Covington, The Airplane's drummer, does some of the singing here. He ruined most of the latter day Airplane albums. Need I say more? Strictly for the curiousity seeker.
