very very grey and pallid. He was croaking, he had no voice whatsoever. It didn't help that he had not one but two cigarettes going at the same time. Yes, he threw the microphone down and stormed off the stage. It was during Black Peter, at 7:03. I saw it. It was shocking, and the rest of the band looked shocked and played on, looked like they didn't know what else to do. Garcia came back on but only played and did not attempt to sing again.
The most memorable thing about this show was Jerry throwing down his mic stand during "Don't Ease Me In". Thought I imagined it, but it's been confirmed

by others. The show lacked the "It" factor; the following night was the same: underwhelming. But the third night was killer! Third times a charm! But who knows, maybe this show sounds good. It's not horrible. And, I was with good friends. Had fun with them.

But, Jerry's voice ragged all 3 nights.... and other than a yeoman's effort on Cold Rain & Snow, this first of the 3 shows was not a great vocal night for him..... Song selections mediocre all nights.... Odd to do 3 nights in Hartford without a Scarlet/Fire or China/Rider..... but, 31 years later, I still say there ain't no place I'd of rather been

pumped as the Berry chords give the intro a 70s appeal. Brent's Hammond loudly colors up the brisk casual confidence of this "Promised." The double-shot of Bobby continues with a decent "Greatest." Yea, Jerry's got no voice tonight as it's evident during an "Althea" that almost loses its bearing. Just remember that the "Little Red Rooster" don't mean shit to Brent. It broods. "Cold Rain" is well-received besides sludging a bit through the mud. "Mobile Blues" is brisk if not powerful. "Box" goes down smoothly if not memorably whereas "Ease" casually closes off a decent first set. 2nd Set: "Playin" is an exciting tune to open up the set with; however, despite a well-presented song the jam goes nowhere and is way too abbreviated. "Crazy" is the natural segue though the version sags due to Jerry's fatigue. The other bandmates are up to the challenge, howver, this version just feels too empty. (Though the emptiness equates with a sadness that fits "Crazy") "Franklin" moves with buoyancy but lacks depth as well as Jerry's voice sounds croak-y. the crowd remains involved though as they're welcoming "Man Smart"'s arrival. Youthful Brent takes over singing duties during the second voice. "Drums" and "Space" are the norm though there's a moment in the former that gets ridiculously loud. "Gimme" is moderately entertaining. "Black" is quite the appropriate choice considering Jerry's condition. Why not offer a little extended 'false ending' "Lovelite" considering the less than ideal performance. We're encoring with Jerry; the crowd still involved clapping to the poignant rhythm of the song. Not a total bomb, but cannot recommend. 2 2/5th stars

that this is one of the worst and darkest Dead shows of all time. Jerry never should of approached the mike after Fingers. When Jerry threw the mike during Black Peter, people had to be a little freaked out. He then ripped a smoking, albeit abrupted jam that smoked though ... check it out. Then for some insane reason, he does the encore too. A weird night indeed!

the second set would be left to Weir to lead, but I can not for the life of me understand why Garcia insisted on singing, especially slow songs, when he had NO voice. They could have salvaged this show by giving the second set to Bob, but did we really have to sit through Jerry croaking through Crazy fingers and Black Peter? I was happy that he tossed the mic - at least he was as frustrated as I was.

forced himself through it. When he spiked the mic after the last verse of Black Peter it was his way of saying that there aint nothin gonna stand in my way of doin the job. Anytime I'm at work at work or playing sports, dealing with my kids etc. if I don't feel like giving my all, I try and reach deep within to get the job done. If you piker out and give up, then you let you let everyone else on the team down. The Old Man would never do that. At least not in the years of being free from the Persian (no, not a kitty kat). Anyhoo, this is important and unique part of GD history that every true head should at least hear once. Look at the set list!!! He didn't have to sing all those songs...The point is he did, and when he fisished he spiked the mic like he ran a coast to coast touchdown. Bully for him, I was there and I loved that show. Let this show be an inspiration to us all. I miss that overweight heroin addict more than anything. Drink beer, GDOC67

such a great run at Hampton. This show was weak and I sold my tickets to the rest of the tour, waiting to get reinvigorated at the Greek. Anyway, at this show Jerry's voice is horrible and the overall playing is perfunctory. Shoulda stayed at home.
