An Interesting Night at the Fox
Not sure what prior reviewer considers a decent show if he thinks this is "dreck". Was there both nights in April '78, along with most of Emory College

[or so it seemed]. Was this the greatest show ever? Of course not. But were there some mighty fine spots? Hell yes. Love the Dancin'- -a song I generally disdain. And the Franklins smokes. Drums were long but rumor has it there were some technical issues keeping the tribal beat going. Now I was high as a kite by then [okay, I was landing on the Mars Hotel by the time I got to my seat and Promised Land started], but I recall roadies coming on stage and banging on anything available during drums.... But I digress..... First set was steady and solid. Bobby's jokes/stories were super groaners, per usual...... but all in all, a fine time was had by all!!

Painful to listen to
I downloaded the wrong 1978 fox theater show. Check out the October show. At any rate, Jerry is clearly stoned out of his mind here in the first set.

There is no imagination in his soloing, his timing is unsettling and his phrasing just makes me sad. You get a little bit 'o Bob chatting with the crowd but I get the feeling that he is just buying time for Jerry to pull it together. It pains me to listen to this and I will be deleting this show from the hard drive.

Cassel Coliseum, William and Mary Show, Huntington Civic Center, and Rupp Arena are all on my best of list for 78', next to the Red Rocks shows. So to say "what happened?" I'm not exactly sure what you mean. There are certainly stronger shows from April than this Fox show, but I think this period of performances is undeniably strong.

I flew down for this show
This show was one of the highlights touring with Jerry. I worked for the dead in the catering division. (Kitchen Cy Kocis/ thru Monarch Entertainment

Bureau). This particular show I flew down at Jerry's request. There was a genuine feeling of freedom within the band, and it reflected in the music at this show. Hell, Steve Parrish joined in during the drum solo if you remember! Jerry had a special gathering of fans at the hotel later that night. Actually he planned it, and I was kind of caught off guard. At any rate, it was a party that I would never forget. He was the master of ceremonies in more ways than one. "A musical genius with a flare for comedy" would be a good way to describe the night. Anyone else at the party that night please chime in. What a night! Miss you Jerry! Those were great days. ;-)

It's All Over Now
My favourite All Over Now is the one they play here. It starts real quiet and just winds tighter until it comes down to the finish like a runaway train

through your living room. Dig the interplay between Keith and Jerry on the second solo break after the the "SHe used to run around..." verse. If you're a fan of Jerry's you'll be in heaven. For that matter check out the first solo which sounds as if it starts on his bottom "E" string just moseying up the fret board with all the time in the world. I once dj'd a Dead dance where people went absolutely nuts for this one. The sound quality is stellar. I know some of you out there can either get this here or all of you can get it somewhere else. It's a sweet Dire Wolf too. Really swings.

Strange, fun and odd.
First of all, the sound quality of the recording is top notch. This one has always had a place in my heart as there seems to be a real sense of mischief

through the show. The drumming to Brown eyed women has to have been done for fun, maybe to throw off Jerry while he was singing, Billy or Mickey plays aginst the beat making the song seem to lurch and stutter (how Jerry doesn't mess up the tempo is beyond me). Following on from this, after a few songs Bob tells two of the worst jokes in history. As Jerry says, don't encourage him! The version of TMNS always cracks me up. They were having fun following the the miscue at the start, either Jerry's intro piece comes in too late or Bob jumps in a bar too early. Either way it seems to throw the band off a bit. Bob starts playing around with the singing making Jerry and Donna laugh, soon followed by Keith playing out of time. It reminds me of funny and very intense Dancin' off DP 25! An interesting listen.

Weir starts singing the first verse before Garcia gets to do his introductory line. Then Weir, Keith and the drummers are completely out of synch for

the first part of this tune. By the 3 minute mark, after they think they've fixed it (you can hear them laughing about it), Keith seems to deliberately come in ahead of the beat. The jam starts around 3:30. One of the weakest MNS turns you'll ever hear comes at 6:11. It sounds as if Jerry just would prefer to crawl off into bed. Or jam this mess into something completely different. At the seven minute mark, Keith starts going astray again. Jerry does get his trilled chords going at the end, but you know he's relieved to just have gotten thru this thing. What a train wreck. The soundboard quality, however, is pretty crisp. Promised Land, Brown Eyed, Jack Straw, nothing that special in terms of the playing; they all show Garcia to be generally tentative, meek, and really struggling through them.
