The second set is in the top five for the eighties!

First set is not all that inspired, though there are no serious flaws. The second set is more interesting and ends with clean, tight rockers
Solid and ... expressive vocals on He’s Gone. It’s always nice to have Morning Dew in a show, and this is a nice effort. Jerry gives up some powerful guitar solos and crafts the gradual ebbs and flows and changes in dynamics and emotion that gives Dew its appeal.
Sound is not so great, with a notable lack of bass. Phil is inaudible in parts of the recording.

Beautiful Evening--the sun was setting over San Fransisco Bay, and from the top of the Greek Amphitheatre you could see sail boats, the orange sun lighting
...
up the coloured spinnakers. It had just start to get dusky moving towards dark, when the Band eased on into the Wheel, and Fire Works (big Fire Works) were being shot off over Downtown San Francisco--and everyone at the top of the amphitheatre is doing the EWWW AHHH that goes along with big fireworks--and you could tell that the folks in the bottom of the theatre couldn't see the explosions, and didn't know why there was this collective eww and ahh-ing in the opening strains of The Wheel, and then just as the boys hit :and the Thunder won't get you...." they shot of the grand finale across the Bay---definitely a show to remember.

Very jammy show! Nice He's Gone > Truckin', but the Other One > Dew is IT. Audio is only so-so, as Jim Wise notes.

Went the first night and was pinned about 20 feet in front of Jerry for most of the show, No miracle the second or third; however, If I remember right,
...
a block down from the gig in a park the dead set up a live feed with some speakers for the poor bastards not in the Amphitheatre, if I remember right, the dude from the dead that was watching this setup was letting people tap into the feed, so unless they were in the same condition
I was in, they probably got a good recording, I wonder who those dudes were?
5 stars for Jerry's playing that night

This, to me , stands out as one of the best 3-show runs of the eighties, and what a great show to kick it off with ( as an aside I read an old interview
...
in Relix with Dick recently where he said that the Archives don't have the masters for a lot of '81 shows including the Greeks, so i don't think we'll be seeing a Dick's Picks from these shows soon). Solid first set, great second set, and my personal favorite Dew.
After an inspired Other One, the boys proceeded to blow our minbds with one of the most powerful, yet sweet Morning Dews i have ever heard. The first break is so powerful and almost angry, and you can hear the crowd in the background pushing the band higher and higher. The truly amazing part is the closing jam.... Jerry starts out so sad and quiet, and slowly builds to a raging climax. This jam was so sweet that it brought tears to many an eye at the Greek that evening. The sweetest Sound I have ever heard was Jerry's penetrating leads piercing through the night and and often through the pschedelic haze in my head, and this is one of those moments that still sends chills down my spine and brings me back to that gorgeous early fall night in the Bay area.

One of these campus runs the Dead did in '81 should be a Dick's Picks some day. Since I went to these shows, I'll nominate Cal Berkeley's Greek Theater!
...
A nice clean sound is really needed here though. Somebody out there needs to step up to the plate and deliver some new goods. I know security was extra tight on the tapers for these shows but I have to believe that there is superior source for these shows...hiding...waiting for the light of day.
Dick's Picks #??
Four stars for great show minus recording.
UPDATE:
For some alternative shows from 1981 with clean sound try Chicago 2/26, 2/27 & 2/28; Essen 3/28; Hartford 5/12; Austin 7/4; Denver 7/13; Salt Lake 8/12; Amsterdam 10/16; and Oakland 12/27 > 12/31. You're bound to find something you like! Thanks Archive for all these incredible shows.
