Look folks, there's nothing like the Grateful Dead. For decades they made the music of the gods. But seriously people, where are the balanced reviews?
...
This was the worst show I ever saw in 28 years. Second set starts, Alabama, Stranger, Eyes, Drums? Seriously. Maybe 20 minutes of music before the drum solo. Jerry either had diarrhea, or needed to shoot up. He got off the stage so fast it was embarrassing. The drummers realized what was up and put on the best drum solo display ever, trying to save the show. And people are giving this nonsense 5 stars? CHECK OUT 1970 DUDES!! you'll find some serious 5 star worthy shit back in the day. But not this night.

The download is worth it for this Minglewood alone. Good sounding aud of an Knocked-out-of-the park show... Ball-Crushing Loser...Jerry growls his way

through LLRain, Rough and Ready Althea & Music Never Stopped. Really solid, well played first set.
Sure, the aformentioned dropout in the latter is a sk\light bummer but it is so so so easily overlooked buy the strength of this recording.
I've experience far worse Live than from a tape.
Oh, the stories I could tell of attending shows that totally sucked...
Anyways, 2nd set has an interesting set list that falls together really well once Brent loses is dated synth noise....the playing a few of the new songs off of Go To Heaven, some of which would later become standards, is just a slight taste of what the rest of the tour is going to look like...lots and lots from Go To Heaven. Jerry shreds, just shreds Alabama Getaway here..
It is interesting how they segue Alabama Getaway into Stanger, and from Stranger into Eyes. Again, this material is new to them, so they're really paying attention to what they're doing. This focus does not fade when they switch to playing the standards.
As an aside, this Eyes is one of the fast ones, in case you go for that.
Jerry is even playing around with every effect in his repertoire, even on the familier songs...way fucking cool.
I am a huge fan of Spring/Summer 1980 Grateful Dead shows, and on this first listen this show blows my head off. The 2nd set isn't quite as strong as the first, but remember, Jerry is having fun with his amp knobs and electronic toys while Bobby is getting some good licks in there as well.
Play it loud.
4 1/2 stars for performance...they seem to race through the post drums part of the 2nd set too much to deserve 5 stars, but 5 stars for the recording.
5 stars overall, then.

A good recording but: Beware of a significant drop-out at the end of TMNS.
Dig the ferocious Minglewood & TMNS.

Bob Morris did a fine job recording this show from 1980. Check out the unique sequence in the second set: Alabama>Stranger>Eyes
