Subject: What a killer show!
This is the first show I did NOT attend that I've decided to review; I was 12 years old at the time. 29 years ago yesterday: that really makes you think.
I ... am usually not a fan of early 80's shows. Many of the songs are usually played too fast and the band in general sounds too "wired up" for my taste. It's just not my era. I grew up listening to the Dead from '87 on, and I think we heads tend to like what we're used to. My favorite "vintage" stuff comes from '73. But with this San Diego show, I now really see what the older heads are talking about.
Garcia is truly playing like a god here, and the set list is tasty & adventurous. Did I mention that Garcia is playing like a freakin' GOD?? Seriously, without exaggeration, I don't think I've ever heard him playing better. The quality of the tape is such that Garcia's guitar is way out front of all the other sounds, and the vocals are considerably buried all the way through, but if you want to hear Garcia rippin', this is the show for you!

Subject: I Was Starting To Wonder...
This series of shows represents some of the last interesting GD shows pretty much ever.
If your like me you went to shows to be amazed and surprised. ... Well soon after this you may have been amazed by the musicianship but rarely surprised by the set list.
This is a part of the transition period before it got totally and I mean TOTALLY formula for the Dead.
I got thrown out of this show for standing towards the front left. HUGE yellow jacket just hoisted me up and out! I went right to the door and calmly explained it was a mistake and here was my ticket. There were about 20 of us begging to in or back in. Guy at the door was backed by another 6 giant yellow jackets. No way in! Guy in front of me outside was tweeking and finally made a dash for it! Yellow jackets in hot pursuit the guard at the door leapt to stop me, but I calmly held my ticket and made no advance and said it was a mistake I was out there. He said go ahead! I got back in! I could here the rest of the crowd out side screaming "hey ya let him in...blah blah blah"
I was back by LS!
I think my GF dumped me after this for staying out all night with the fellas. Oh well it was worth it and if she wasn't going to Dead shows who needs her right?!
BTW As I recall this was the last series of Dead shows in SD for quite some time. My being pretty well thumped for just standing towards the front happened right in front of Jerry and I know he saw the whole thing. I probably wasn't the only one to get the SD treatment either..... Too bad this was agreat venue for the band.

A wonderfully hot front of board AUD copiously delivered to us courtesy of Rango Keshavan and properly enhanced by GD remaster master Charlie Miller.
What ... I love about Rango's tapes is that you can clearly make out all the separation, like, for example, both drummers. Also, Bobby's guitar sound is not swallowed by the keyboards as often he is in SBD's.

This was a real nice 3 show Southern California Run, 2 at Golden Hall and 1 at Pauley Pavillion.
This show, the 19th was an excelent show.
1st set highlights ... are Bertha, Dire Wolf and a very nice Althea.
Also check out Jerry's slide work in the first break and his solo in the second on Red Rooster....Awesome!!!
2nd set is very nice, pre-drums is well played, albeit a pretty ordinary song list. The LS/St. is a version everyone should hear with a nice space jam after.
After Drums just takes off with a real nice space Jam into an Other One for the ages!! Phil is having a great time and goes into the earthquake riff numerous times throughout the jam. This is one of the absolute best Other Ones of the 80's. The Stella is sweet, and to wrap it up they came up with something a little unusual, Women Smart, instead of Around & Around (or as we used to call it Again and Again) into Johnny B goode.
IMHO, EVERYONE SHOULD HEAR THIS OTHER ONE!!
This version is a 100% upgrade from what was available before. The other sources are tinny and Phil is in the background.
