say over the years I have been a hunter seeking the best althea. While there are some that may exceed this one, the way this show is mixed, combined with the unique improvisation especially at the end, I cannot help but say, by god please listen to this one.

and only time that they did it with Brent. The other two occurences, 12/30/78 and 11/20/78 are, obviously, Keith shows. There are also a couple of shows where drums and space get in the middle, which to my way of thinking, is a different thing. So, yes, pretty uncommon, and probably not the most workable transition. By the way, in all, the two songs were only played together in the second set, regardless of order, 24 times which isn't all that many to begin with. Last thought, the more common order was Shakedown > Playing, although without listening to each one I would guess that is less of a "jam into" and more of a "didn't stop to tune" given the way Shakedown ends.

up material. The supposedly dubbed excellent Playin>Shakedown>Bertha combo is okay, but nothing at all special. Especially compared to the stellar last night of this run. First of all Playin and Shakedown are plagued with sound problems. Little cuts with crappy patches. Right now i'm listening to Bertha and didn't hear Phil until four minutes in. Also really poor transition between Playin>Shakedown. Complete No Huddle. We appreciate the unique set list, but do it right. Decent Playin' Jam after Bertha tho. Jerry gets warmed up and back to expected fall 81 standards (by Just saying, we appreciate the board, but you don't have to give every show 5 stars just because you love the Grateful Dead. I give many 5 star ratings, but when i'm inspired by energy and sound quality. Maybe, in person, at the Rainbow Theater in 1981 this was epic, but the recording dons't do it justice. 3.5 for show, 3 for sound, solid 3 since we have so many damn good sounding boards on the archive.

atmosphere - there was no problem walking up to the stage, resting your elbows on the stagfe and watching Jerry and the band do their thing! It was one of my memorable Dead experiences!
It seems a lot of deadheads are listening to their archive streams at low volume and judging the shows based on picky sound criteria and not really getting

the whole point of the groove. I suggest taking a few months away from the dead and then reapproaching the shows with a new heart. You addicts out there are just plain funny in your attempt to turn a live rock band into an olympic gymnastics competition. This London shows kicks ass. Turn up the volume and party down while you listen, don't just sit at your computers like drones and expect magic.

The Dead loved playing Europe since the audience expectations were different than in the States. Times had changed and demands on the band in this era

was for loud, rocking jams. The Rainbow Theater offered the group a chance to play some soulful, jazzy jams and sink into the music. At the start of this show, the sound was not great up front. The floor was so open that you could walk up to the stage and back to the rear of the theater without bumping into anyone. The music was good, despite the set list being inncouous. All in all, the first set was ok. During the break, SOMETHING kicked in. The second set opened with Playing --> Shakedown --> Bertha and it seemed like it was going to be a stellar 2nd. I looked around and found myself in the middle of the typical sea of humanity. No open spaces left. Immersed in the music, I was not prepared for what would come next. WEIR blew the whistle! It changed the set, changed the mood and hurt our ears real bad. If anything, find some extra space on one of your CDs and download the short, sweet opening 3 tunes above.
