As I streamed this show knowing the Peggy-O was early, I continued on and listened to the rest of the show. What stopped me in my tracks was the Drums segment. I admittedly sometimes skip over drums, as it's complex and I can't even keep a beat when I dance!

As I listened it felt like Billy and Mickey were drumming 500 years ago somewhere in Africa as a new king is christened. Never before has a Drums moved me quite this way.

I hope others pay attention, it's delicious!

Wow this show is great so much emotion in the black Peter it’s a top one for me. The dancin they really cut loose on it all around great show.

For me, this is one of Jerry's greatest solos and the band just pushes him to extraordinary heights. Bravo on the recording as well!

As a Hokie alumni I decided to search for shows at VA Tech and was surprised to see this show existed. I started school in the fall of 78 but I wasn't a Dead Head when I arrived. That changed within the first few months when one of my good friends in the dorm introduced my roommate and I to the Dead. So upon discovering this show at archive.org, I listened to the whole show straight through and must say it is a real gem. Thank you to all that reviewed this show ahead of me and gave it such high marks which prompted me to listen to it.

Huh? Which is it? Sounds good to me. I'll go. Is this the show where it sounds like a seal massacre or something during the space? I can't recall, but I'll find out soon

This was my first show.........I remember most of the show since we didn't eat any paper......the music grabbed me......the dancing surrounded me. I found a new family......shortly thereafter at the Capital Centre, I met Owsley Blue and my life changed forever.......Peggy O and Looks Like Rain, The Dancin Never Stopped, Sugar Mag, Whoa....and it "Keeps on Growin'"...

Really sloppy and lazy, but some good moments.

This show cooks in every way. One of those shows where even the first set songs are so nuanced with punctuation and intensity that it makes you realize how killer the Dead were in the 70s. I love Jerry's voice from this period really ragged and refrained, even if he's loosing it, it sounds good while he is.

The Peggy O from this show is a contender for "best ever" for sure. Same with "It's All Over Now", the revived "Dupree's" , and "The Other One".

I really appreciate Donna's contributions to this show. She sounds really good. Drums are really up forward in the mix as as bass.

I was 17 years old and my parents let me drive their Plymouth Fury from Lynchburg to Blacksburg to see the show. It was assigned seating and we had just found our seats as the lights went down and first few chords of Promised Land rang through the auditorium. I froze dead in my tracks and stood watching in amazement. I had found my seat but apparently did not want to use it. Eventually the guy behind me tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to sit down. For years I wondered if I actually saw Bobby and Phil "drumming" on the metal folding chair or if I just imagined it. Thanks to the the earlier posting for verifying that I really did see that!

Yea Jerry freakin nails it in a Big way best one I heard one of if not the best Dead show I have ever heard even Donna is great the whole show is off the map spring 78 wowowowowow oh my god this show is insane Looks Like Rain wow 5000 stars

Will go with the crowd on this one. Superlative Peggy. Rivaled only by a few during the Spring, 77 run thru the Northeast.

How wonderful to, out of curiosity, yesterday Google 'Virginia Tech' and 'Grateful Dead' and find the actual recording of the concert that I attended 33 years and two days ago.

I appreciate the music more now, I think, than I did then when I was into slightly harder rock. The silvery guitar flows, the improv and the drumming are excellent.

Charlie Miller has posted one after another excellent mix and this is no exception. This has a Peggy-O that just wants to make me cry... its so beautiful and well played. Great show from '78, which is a year I attended many GD shows.

Brent joined the band the following year, 1979.
Keith and Donna were still in the lineup at this time.

Someone thanked Brent for the keyboards on this show. Im a new Deadhead, but I didnt think Brent didnt join till sometime in the 80s. Is that so? What was the lineup for this show.

Jerry could have played every run and solo without missing a note. He chose to take risks, and that's why sometimes the music sounds like magic, and sometimes it sounds like Jerry's speedball was too strong that night. He was never afraid to sound bad. Jerry chose to hit the bad notes so he could hit the great ones.

How could someone say sadly Jerry misses a note every time in peggy-o. First off to play a different yet fluid solo every time is extremely difficult. A solo in essence is improv you not supposed to play it note for note every time.

i heard this show from underneath the floor and it was still great! i was staying in the team room under the coliseum as i was in college and on baseball team at odu and we were playing va tech the next day. cool to ACTUALLY hear the show all these years later. agreed peggy-o is top shelf.

I will agree with the other reviewers here that this is the best Peggo-O of 1978 and in my opinion, the best of the 76-78 period. Garcia's solos are fluid and percise. They really evoke the emotion found in this great old folk ballad. Bobby's rythym work is great here too, a choice time of the year for Weir's playing style in my book(before the slide was permanently attached to his finger). I like to think of myself as a Connoisseur of Great SBDs from 1977-1979 and this show rates up there in my top 10. It features the powerful synergy and technical expertise of Spring '77 shows. Just listen to Big River and you will hear what I mean. Jerry's voice is really great this night and Dire Wolf is a great showcase for this. I think I like this night's version better than the studio. I love the late Donna & Keith years and this show is a great reason why! I'll admit some nights Donna just squawked but not so on this night. Her vocals blend nicely with the band and Keith is on top of his game as usual. Keith always gave me the impression that he was a zombie, stoned out of his mind on coke and dope sitting lifeless behind a pair of sunglasses on stage, but when you listen to his playing there is a lot going on there. He never tried to steal the show, he always added perfect color to the music being played. Check out the powerful and spirited Dancin' in the Streets. All and all this is a great show! You won't be dissapointed, and if your not that much into the late 70's give this one a chance. I always chose other periods of the Dead as my favorite when i first got into them but eventually I found out 77-79 is where it's at for me! Enjoy!

i have listened to every peggy-o from 78 and this is the best one. if you are a peggy-o fan then this is a show that you wanna add to the collection. Another good version comes a couple days later at the huntington civic center. once again charlie brings the best. click on charlie miller's name and download his transfers and remasters. they are by far the best you can get. thank you charlie for all the time and effort you put into these masterpieces.

It's hard to find a Peggy-O where Jerry plays the solos perfectly...Sadly, he almost always manages to play a wrong note...I've heard to Peggy-O's from the 76-78 era that are just about perfect, and this is one of them (the other is 9/25/76, dp 20). The rest of this show is great too. While the dead had passed their sort of creative peak by 1978, they were still very technically proficient, and there's some great material from this year. This is a gem. This whole show sounds great and is very well played. Stands up to 1977 shows with no problem... Other personal favorites from this year are 4/24/78, 7/8/78, and 12/31/78...

I have yet to give this a full listen, as it will usually take me a week or so to fully go through a dead show, but I have listened to just about most of the first set , and this show is smoking.

The rythym of big river is so HEAVY, and the quality of this recording captures that power beautifully. One of my fave dead tracks, and a great version here.

A big thank you to Charlie Miller :) More and More I see his name attatched to the shows I have been streaming for years.

And did I mention the Dupree? A glorious version in my opinion, much thanks to Brent on that one. It sounds so damn polished!

AND THE OTHER ONE? The sound quality is ideal, phil's bass exploding out of your speakers.
