playing of high time. Yes very unusual to repeat a song twice in one night. Very very rare and unusual indeed. But, having listened to every concert in order up to this one from the first, and having read the reviews from this show. I do believe that they played high time the first and second time recorded that we know of. I feel this way because there were two distinctive shows at the Fillmore that night and people had to leave and most people didn't pay the entry fee and come back for the late late show from what previous separating. Plus I think that they didn't always have the pedal steel set up and this was an opportunity to play at a second time and it's a relatively short song at that. So that's just my opinion for whatever it's worth. Peace and freak I had to add more to this review there's so much going on in this show. First of all definitely stick around for the second set of the show which comes after the cosmic Charlie the sound quality vastly improves. Next we have what I have researched and believe is the very first mama tried. I didn't know it but Mama tried was written in 1968 by Merle Haggard I thought it was much earlier than that and the dead started playing it I believe at this show. Again we have the Bob weir vocals on direwolf and we have what I think would qualify for the very first grateful Dead acoustics partial half set there's a quite a few songs that are played acoustically and I think it's enough to call it. We have the only version of old old home. We have lots of pedal steel which is always lovely. If you listen closely during love light you'll probably hear the only time there is an acoustic guitar played during lovelight I certainly have never heard it before. It's about 10 minutes into the song I'm wondering if maybe there was a guitar problem broken string or something that caused that to happen I don't know but I loved hearing acoustic guitar in the middle of love light total surprise sorry for the spoiler. If anybody has ever heard another version of lovelight with acoustic guitar please mention it here

Maybe this isn't all one concert? Why would they play High Time twice? Doubtful. Great stuff though. Neat hearing Weir sing a Jerry song - Dire Wolf.

thought I'd give it a listen. At the time I was a big British Blues fan and we were really going to see Savoy Brown. I'd been listening to the Airplane and The Byrds for years, but somehow had not really been exposed to The Dead. When a peddle steel was set up along with all the other gear we really didn't know what to expect. All I knew was that they were a psycnedelic band from San Francisco. So when the boys came out and Jerry sat down at the peddle steel and they opened up with Green Green Grass we were kinda shocked......in a good way ! I loved The Byrds, Sweetheart of the Rodeo and The Burrito Brothers. When they followed with Me and My Uncle and High Time I was in heaven . But the best was yet to come. Next was the full blown psychedelic explosion. I'd seen many shows, even though I was only 15.....Cream, Butterfield, Ten Years After, The Mothers, Jeff Beck, Jethro Tull to name a few. Immediately I knew I was home and this was the first of many many shows to come. The China Cat was wild I'd heard Beck's version of Morning Dew and loved it, but never as I did that night. Jerry took it to a whole other level. To get those as well as short but classic versions of Alligator and The Other One at your first show was amazing. Finally after a raucous rarity, Slew Foot with Jerry ripping on the peddle steel they closed with great rendition of Cosmic Charlie ! Go on home your mama's calling' you, indeed. The bus came 'round and I got on. Never gave Savoy Brown or British Blues another thought, I saw the boys well over 300 times. Saw them many times in 1970 and every year thereafter except 1975 until the show came to an end in 95 when we lost Jerry. I'll forever be grateful I walked into the Fillmore East 50 years ago today. A long wonderful trip for me.

My first Dead show
I was 15. We were hanging in the East Village, saw the names on the Fillmore East's marquee, and just walked up to the window and bought our tickets right

before the show. The Buddy Miles Express opened, followed by Savoy Brown, then the Dead. I had heard of the Dead but didn't know their music, so when they came out with acoustic guitars and a pedal steel, I thought at first they were a country rock band like the Byrds. I had no idea what any of the songs were, except for "Green Green Grass of Home," so it wasn't until I discovered this recording decades later that I found out what they had played. Turns out it was a damn good show. Too bad the recording isn't better. One oddity: The Fillmore East had two shows a night at the time, so I only got to see the first set, which was probably the case for just about everyone else in the audience. If you wanted to see both sets, you had to buy tickets for both shows, and there was no indication that the second show would be different (I guess you probably knew if you were already a Deadhead). The first show didn't end till at least 11, so the late show probably didn't end till almost dawn (I'm pretty sure the opening acts played both shows). BTW, tickets went for 3 to 5 dollars.

An undownloadable stream with unlabeled tracks,
this recording is not a keeper, but parts of it are a good listen. The first set is an audience tape, and a very muddy one, but probably the better half
...
performance-wise. The second is a very crisp, clear soundboard, but incomplete and not as good a show. Very historical.

sound quality-wise, though, the second set more than makes up for it, right from the start with a rare rare performance of old old house. also the king bee on this show is smokin. this is a classic show if you like the nashville/memphis style dead.

the same way the jamming has progressing, so it the notably mellow vibe of the first 3 songs...they are expanding in many ways, rapidly..the transistion
...
to the primal china cat and it's jam (classic 1969)from a mellow country vibe is symbolic of things to come.
