Coliseum. PS... The playback speed is set just fine. I have lots of experience with Sound Engineering and I can tell you that the tape does not wobble, it does not accelerate or decelerate during playback. The levels for all instrument AND vocals are near perfect. The volume levels have diminished across the sound spectrum but I'm guessing that's from tape/ ferrous decay. Thx for the share, I've been looking to re-collect this concert. JRS

First Dead Show

fellow heads. Mad rush, once they let us in, but got a nice spot in front of Jerry. Jerry Jeff Walker, solo, opened up and NRPS followed with a short set. This recording is the second set. Too bad the first set is not here also. I remember going crazy when they began intro to China Cat (luv that tune)and they also did a sweet version of He's Gone dedicated to Pigpen who died shortly before. Met a beautiful young lady while standing during the show that I shared wine & smoke with and we slow-danced together during some of the dead show. Nice version of Trucking and Other One. Just a normal show from 1973, which is pretty special. Started a run of thirty + other dead shows seen during the rest of the 1970s and early 80s.

not badly sped-up
I tested a few tracks from this show against a properly tuned guitar, and while the band does not (to my ears) sound *perfectly* in tune with the A = 440
...
instrument, it is not that far off. Certainly, the singers do not sound like Alvin, Simon, or even Theodore. So don't be deterred (as I'd been) from downloading this show by the idea that the pitch is way off. It isn't.

was awesome! The Boys played plenty of Europe 72 stuff, including He's Gone, in which they mention PigPen. The tapes presented here are nice quality. The performances themselves, although not going to make anyone's "best of" list, are more than adequate representations of 73 Dead. I'm predjudiced because this was my first show but it hangs tough when compared to others of it's time.

Donna. I was at three shows at the Coliseum that March so long ago (this show was on a monday, the other two shows were thursday and friday) and I remember this night as being the mellowest of the three. Two nights earlier (a saturday) I sat next to Keith and Phil at a Pink Floyd show (which started incredibly at 1 am saturday night) at Radio City Music Hall and I told the boys that they had played well on the night before. Floyd was premiering "Dark Side of the Moon" in quadraphonic sound. On the in-between Sunday night the Dead played at the Felt Forum in Madison Square Garden which was simulcast on WNEW FM. What a great five day festival of NYC rock and roll!
