Great Show
I can't remember the circumstances that allowed me to get to this show. I do know that when I google my full name this article I wrote about this show for some Dead forum comes up years later. I remember there being a long line of cars and selling beer before the shows and I remember the riot before the show one night in the parking lot. That was the LSD night though not this one. I remember I was seated at the back of the place to the left of stage and that the sound was good and I could see the taper's section. Beyond that it is all a blur. This is one of the only shows I actually remember of the 60+ that I attended from 1989- 1995... Listening to the tapes now, nice Lazy River Road. I am not a fan of some of the other "new" songs however..

Jerry's Rhythm Guitar in Minglewood
This review replies to Jerry's rhythm guitar playing in Minglewood. It's clear in the mix, energetic, and varied.

I'm Sure This Ain't What Dr. Smith Had In Mind
By this time i had retired from taping so I grabbed sbd's from a trader in late 93, beautiful stuff though portions of these 2 shows sound like they were mixed by a one-eared monkey. Wasn't Healy retired by then? No matter...the bugs eventually flew away and magic took their place.

Sweet Show
I loved these Chapel Hill shows. The band was good and the scene was too.
Flashy I saw the near riot as well, and that was unfortunate, but in no way did it detract from what was a really sweet show. And, you know, I dont think I ever set in "my" seat at a Dead Show..peace

Back To Back!
The Band really smoked these two nights. The Arena was brand new and the the sound was excellent. Touch opener was pretty standard. As previous reviewers have attested GSET was one of the best. So Many Roads was also great. Mexicali was also well played. Eternity pulled the plug on the rest of the set. Set 2 starts of with a smoking China-Rider a nice trasnition jam and very good solos. Terrapin is hot nice jam into the Drums. The Long way out of Drums is one of the Best versions. Other One is out of this world the Best in years high intensity all the way through. Morning Dew is Sick I agree it is among the best of the 90's Great soloing Phils Bass is thundering an emotional redition. The Weight is a nice choice for encore. Vince Piano is excellent. Great shows great Venue. First shows I had seen in almost a year and the Band especially Garcia were in excellent form.

Parking Lot scene
This show was the beginning of the end for me and the post-"In The Dark heads". It took forever to even get close to the parking lot. I must have sat through 20 light changes in a 2 block stretch. We parked the car and literally ran to the gates and still missed the first two songs. The show itself was great but our seats 20 feet from the snack bar sucked ass. They had a TV tuned to some friggin' college basketball game and hence our listening enjoyment was frequently interupted by the non-head jocks crowded in the hallway drinking beer and cheering. The noise was so loud during Morning Dew, we got up and left in disgust. What the Fu*k! If you were more interested in b-ball than Jerry laying down some sick licks, you should have stayed back in the dorm. On our way to the car we witnessed two cops tring to bust some drunkin' asshole who was puking on somebodys car. A crowd of deadheads surrounded the cops and were threatening them. Bad Craziness. After that I heard way to often from friends about gate-crashing and violence related arrests at numerous Dead shows. The Dead were actually banned for a time from playing Albany, Highgate and Deer Creek because of the bad rep of some of the new generation of heads. The Deer Creek incident in 1995 forced the Dead to cancel the 2nd show and issue a warning to Heads. I only saw one more Grateful Dead show after this one, with Traffic up at RFK on July 16, 1994, after that I was done. So it goes.... only 3 stars because of the dicks in the hall. Aiko-Aiko.

Good follow-up
This show isn't as well known as the one from the night before, which is a shame because it's a very good show in its own right. Perhaps it's a bit heavy on the new stuff (I'd give it four stars, but I am docking one star because they played BOTH Wave to the Wind and Way to Go Home after a first set that ended with Eternity - Liberty) but the quality overall is still very good, especially in the second set. The Other One > Dew is very underrated here, especially Dew, one of the best from the last ten years IMO. Also an outstanding Terrapin. Overall, well worth listening to.

The only Grateful Dead show I ever saw!
Seeing the Grateful Dead in concert turned out to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me--and what a show it was! I'm glad to have a copy of it and minor audio anomalies at the beginning in no way detract from my ability to enjoy this recording.

Another "Greatest Story Ever Told"...
Just to clear the air about how this board patch went down...
Phil was uber-angry about the patch being given to the section 3/24. Healey was kind of laughing about it. I was running out of Erdheim's rig, when he handed me these XLR cables, and asked me to see if there was signal on them. I pop'd 'em into the trusty D-10P, switched from digital to analog - lo and behold there was signal. I had ONE DECK in the chain behind me, and I was so freaked I forgot to come off pause at the beginning of the show (hence, so many copies having the "touch" as an audience, and the levels being so screwey - I wasn't expecting to be "lead" on this. The guy patched behind me DID come off pause, and I got a copy of the 1st set from him a week after the show. WE were the only two decks for the 1st set. Needless to say there were about 20 in the chain for the 2nd set. We duck-taped the cables to the floor and ran both sets.
I asked Howard about this during summer tour, and he would not say if the cables were "intentionally" left there, and plugged in - or not.
At any rate, this is how this 2nd night of Chapel Hill came to be out on SBD...

Good show, often overlooked
This second night of Chapel Hill is often eclipsed by the first night. This is a very good show with a large helping of the Dead's new (in 1993, that is) songs. This is one of my favorite "So Many Roads". Jerry is in great voice throughout.
This source is the better of the two. The other "unconfirmed" source sounds to me like it has an analog generation in the first set.
