Subject: City of Roses
This show had been scheduled/sold for 5/3/73, then moved with the tour. It's not quite the level of the previous show, in Vancouver - just solid GOGD. The first set has scattered peaks but the second plays well as a whole. Phil in particular is worth listening for, having a great show.
First Set. The SBD for Promised Land is a mess; the official release is the way-better source. The playing is messy too - not a trainwreck maybe, but not together yet either. Things first gel for an ace Mexicali; Keith and Jer are both amazing [the SBD has a cut and a still-settling mix]. They Love Each Other has a missed verse and a flubbed verse, so its shorter, but otherwise great. The next several are average '73, with an unengaging Row Jimmy, making the middle of the set somewhat sparkless, though there is a fine Race is On. After a decent Beat it on Down the Line-7 comes a brilliant China Cat (check Phil here) and a solid Rider. Most copies have a cut in the latter though one does not. The official has a weird patch/edit. From 2:18>2:46 it switches to 12/6/73 Cleveland, and then jumps to 2/28/73 SLC for 2:46>4:00 (missing 1: 39 from the SBD, including the end solo). Around & Around is raucous enough that it doesn't need perfection to leave 'em happy for the break.
Second Set. Start to finish solid, starting with the Half-Step Mississippi. Fwiw, this is perhaps the best version of You Ain't Woman Enough. Keith and Jer add to Donna at her best. Stella Blue is spare, followed by a more exciting Greatest Story. Keith is magnificent on the next two aces. Big River is the sound of Jer kicking his stall. Dark Star is not one of the better versions from the period - most of it feels like waiting. There's an immediate freeform section for 15mins, before the actual song, then it really gets lost. However @6:35 there's an Elastic Jam that's cool, and one of the longest. Eyes is solid enough - the SBDs have a 35sec reel flip @~11:37, usually smoothed over, but this section is intact on the official release. The rest is '73 GOGD.
1st Set: C+
2nd Set: B-
Overall = 3¼ stars
Highlights:
Mexicali Blues - Keith & Jer amazing
China Cat Sunflower - Phil being brilliant
You Ain't Woman Enough - Donna wheelhouse
Bertha - notable version
Big River - Jer stall-kicking
SOURCES: The best SBD source is the miller_99852, though it is slightly fast, needing -1% pitch, and has the channels reversed. The cotsman_12828 does not have the same clarity, however it is the only source with the complete I Know You Rider. The Pacific NW box has the complete show (except for Rider). Box of Rain is on Believe It If You Need It.

This “Dark Star” jam will knock your aunt Connie’s socks off. Segue that right into splendiferous “Eyes Of The World” for the ages and you, my friend, have got yourself some really underrated jams. The effluent kaleidoscope sounds emanating form this show are a thing of beauty that should not be missed. Enjoy, amigos.

Subject: 8/27/72 lightning didn't strike twice
The boys really left their mark the last time they played in Oregon (Read: 8/27/72), but that magic escaped them this time around. Still, this night was not without a moment. Perhaps not surprisingly, the Dark Star is the success story here. While this Star is not among the crème de la crème versions for the year (look to 2/15, 6/10, 8/1, 10/19, 11/11, & 12/6 for examples), it’s still not without high merit, not the least of which for the inclusion of the 6/8 jazz vamp that Phil lays down, commencing around the 6:30 mark. The jouncing groove simply sucks the listener in, warranting many happy returns. It seems Phil was quite enamored with this structure, as he played it a few times this month (the Dark Star on 6/10 & The Other One on 6/29 come to mind). Still, the piece of music presented here is quite unique, and worthy of multiple listens.
This show as a whole is not essential, as it is riddled with more clams and lyrical flubs than sister shows of this month. Moreover, the first set ditties sound dialed in (often an Achilles’ heel in ’73), but it’s nearly blatantly obvious here. If one is seeking solid shows for this month, look to the stupendous show from two days earlier (6/22) or the great (but slightly overrated) 6/10 show.
*Contrary to what one reviewer below claimed, this Dark Star does not contain a “Philo-Stomp”. That particular groove was only played in the fall of 1972 a handful of times (10/18, 10/28, 11/13 & 11/26 during Dark Star, and on 10/24 during “The Other One”). All of these versions are worth seeking out.

Recording seems just fine, show is same, not wanting to come off like a complaint---just want the right order laid out. This set list doesn't jive w/DEADBASE, but as we all know DEADBASE isn't perfect--esp. w/ these pre '74 shows----looks like all the songs are there, but the list in the book has it scrambled from the way it is here---
-anyone have any kinda of helpful info ?
OK Now--the DEADBASE says ORDER UNCERTAIN, and incomplete

Subject: Nice Show, trancendent Dark Star!
Subject: Nice Show, trancendent Dark Star!
This performance is capped of with an incredible medley of Dark Star>Eyes>China Doll. Definitely one of the best pairings of these tunes of '73. The 'Philo Stop' and subsequent jamming in and around this theme is amazing, Jerry's playing particularly special. The Eyes that follows is typical jazzy '73, and then some.
There are a few issues that prevent me from giving this a five. For one thing, there seems to be an inordinate amount of lyrical flubs this nite; a few don't really bother me, but I found there was enough to be distracting. Also, most of the little tunes aren't played all that hot (Compare to the 6/22 show, for example). But really this is a fine, fine show...a solid 4 for me. The Dark Star is the must hear territory though.

What JC Edwards thinks of my reviews. Woof!
Leave it be, J.C.
I found nothing wrong with oh um ah's review. It's informative. He gives his opinion. His opinions are helpful to me when deciding to expend 3 hours of my un-valuable time into listening to an entire GD show.
Oh, I didn't think you meant any harm. You were just momentarily annoyed.

I think that we all need to take a second and remember why we all listen to the grateful dead. This show is wonderful! and we all need to thank those who made it possible for us to be able to listen to these great great GREAT gems! I'm giving this show, Charlie Miller, and Peace a 5 star rating. and as badly as the negative vibes from the review make me want to rate it less..... I will refrain from doing so.

The reviewer is doing us all a favor in his reviews. However, JC Edwards is not. I second the reviewers feelings. JC just seems like an a-hole. My review (the lowest rating for a lowlife) is for JC.
And take your Klingon bird of prey home with you back to Mommies basement. Hope she doesn't walk in on you again when your being intimate with yourself! I know you hate when that happens!

Thanks to Mr. Miller and Mr. Smith for sharing this show with us.
Like Charlie says in the "notes", the first few tracks are a mess.
Halfway through "They Love Each Other" it gets better, and about a minute and twenty into "Box of Rain" it starts to sound real good...mix wise that is.
This is not the best mixed show there is, so beware. But it does get better as it goes along. By the time you get to Dark Star, everything is fine...
4 stars for the mix, and recording. There is some kind of cut around 2:28 in IKYR. Billy's kit doesn't sound like it was mixed right.
A nice show from 1973 to add to your collection, but not a must have show, unless you were there.
I recommend using your EQ during playback of most of the shows on the IA, this one included.
Windows Media Player has a 10 band EQ and SRS WOW effects that enhance the sound.
Here's one way to download this show:
The IA recommends users of Windows XP view this web-page with RealPlayer. RealPlayer is a free media player you can download at www.realplayer.com.
For easy streaming or downloading you should use RealPlayer.
Using RealPlayer to view this webpage, click the VBR M3U link to open the songs in the Playlist. If your Playlist is not open, open it by clicking the Playlist icon at the lower right hand corner of RealPlayer. Once the songs are in the Playlist, double click the song to play it, then click the record button at the lower left hand corner of Realplayer to record it.
When the red line reaches the other end click the stop button to download the song. Your song is in the RealPlayer Downloads folder. Repeat these steps for each song.
Eat, Drink, Be Merry and Listen to the GRATEFUL DEAD.
Thanks for the LOVE from 1973.
PS: Remember to click the "DeadLists Project" link and get the poster for this show.
PSS: JC Edwards do not download these shows, I'd hate to think I was helping people like you.
You've inspired me to tell everyone.
As of this review it's been DOWNLOADED 252 times.
I wonder why the IA tells us it's been DOWNLOADED?
I guess you are just another child raised by dumb hippies and dont' know any better.

Your ignorance know's no bounds I gather. Please cease and desist from your "reviews" as you call them before you ruin what has come to still be a good thing for the rest of us.
Your blatant "ignant" attitude ( ignant being 20 steps lower than just plain ignorant ) is causing an negative affect for us member's of the IA: Grateful Dead community that wish to continue enjoying the music and recordings available as much as they are currently.
If you cannot understand what I just said in a more Gentlemanly manner, might I put in a more direct format:
If I had access to a Klingon "Bird of Prey", I would propose shoving the nose of it up your arse and fire a couple a couple of Photon Torpedoes!!
Have A Grateful Day
