Summer flies and August dies, the world grows dark and mean
To all the people who swear 1994-95' sucked, this show is proof that there were still some hidden gems in the final 12 months. Nice mix of standards and new stuff, solid playing, and tight jams. I really enjoyed this one, nice surprise.
Happy 50th Grateful Dead !

Review
(I was at these shows. Crazy trip, beach camping, good shows.)
Issues:
There is a little static a couple of times--at least during Samson--but mostly the overall quality is very clear. And the encore is missing, as anyone can see. Use an aud copy for the encore.
Highlights:
Bird Song, Althea
Love the 2nd set!

First set is sweet - - especially for '94
And second set is pretty good too!! I found that Jerry was still standing tall and smiling a lot through summer '94. Look at a picture from Highgate '94 then one from Highgate '95. Tells you all you need to know about his rapid decline. Not saying '94 was perfect as by fall tour his addiction and weakening heart were painfully obvious.
But back to this show...... Other than Corrina, a nice song list. I actually like some of the Here Come Sunshine's from the 90's, and this one is pretty good. Vocals are on. Rest of first set played well. Not the crazy "Dead jams" of the early years, but coherent and energenic with Jerry leading the band rather than merely trying to keep up with the band.
Always liked the faster Eyes, and while not 70's or 80's [or 1990] speed, this one is upbeat and still very pretty. And going into Fire after Eyes is definitely unique. Big fan of Days Between. Agree with earlier review that US Bluz would have been better than Liberty. Truth be told, pretty much anything would have been better than Liberty. It was the one encore tune I never quite felt fit as an encore - - as opposed to Baba O'Reilly/Tomorrow Never Knows that I just never wanted to hear b/c I hated Vince's lyrics!!!]. I like the tune, just not as an encore. Saw it as more of a first set tune along the lines of Lazy River Road.
But I once again digress..... as for the show, wasn't there so no rating. But, other than Corrina, I'd give this one a 4 with regard to sound and overall energy and musicianship. No, this isn't 1965 through the mid-80's.... but I put this on and enjoyed it as an excellent representation of where they evolved musically, aging like fine wine. Not as rough or edgy. But so sweet and smooth!!!

Inspired Jerry
I remember thinking at set break, "this could be a stinker", which was becoming more and more common during this time. But right from the get with samson i noticed a big difference in jerry. he was smilin and movin around and shredin solos. then, this being the traditional matinée 3pm sun show, the sun was setting during the second set and the backdrop at shoreline has some majestic mountain tops. then during a great Eyes jam, jerry starts to riff Fire and the band follows. I thought, "how wierd eyes>fire? probably never been done, whats with that?". then i turned around to see the sun, blazing, sitting right on top of one of the mountians in the backdrop and jerry did too! Great 2nd set but would of rather had US Blues than Liberty for the 4th.

Right on treadway99. That's how I review them. I always compare them to the shows of the same year. I don't think it's fair to compare Jerry in particular to his younger days. The man was suffering from diabetes and addiction issues. I'm going to listen to this tonight then finish this review. I think this is a pretty good 1994 show. I'd give it 3 stars but I hate Corrina. My favorite of 94 is 3-21 & 7-19. The sound of this recording. is high quality.

Smokin' Samson
I was runnin' with my little cousin at this show and lovin' the home town crowd. Samson came on just as the psychedelics kicked in and the granola kids came alive. Say what you will about post-90 shows--it was still the best circus in town.

Epic
Im not a fan of first sets........But the second set was fucking TITS.If you think about it,while they might not be your favorite songs,Eyes,Fire, and Terrapin are pretty much the three GD "Anthems"we have. They were all played pre-drums(along with Box and Sampson)it was sick.
While it was very weird, there wasnt encores the first 2 nights of this run(i think Shoreline had a noise odinance and you got fined for playing past 11.But this show(the sunday show)started at 5.Im pretty sure there was an encore this night, and if i remeber correctly,it was Liberty.
Awesome show,sounds good,played well

Great Show!
Many of the reviews below miss the greatness of this show. 90s haters should not submit reviews of 90s shows. Yes, we know this is not 74 or 77. I don't think you should compare years. Each year has great shows. You should only compare shows within a year. That said, this show is great. The Eyes>Fire alone gives it 4 stars. Add Samson, Box and Terrapin in pre-drums and a great Bird Song and you get a 5 star show. I think this show is one of the best of 94.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The show had it's moments; had actual seats on July 2; did the lawn scene this day. Short first set, I thought Althea was pretty fine and Jerry did some nice double-stop solos. Days Between suffered from the Jerry lyric and body fade towards the end. Where's the encore?

Generic mid-90s Dead
An okay show by 1994 standards- it doesn't take much to stand out in front of a dreary backdrop - but nothing you'll find yourself reaching for often. I agree with the reviewer below that this is one of those shows that features a set list that looks promising on paper but fails to deliver when played.

7/3/94
I was there, so I am biased, and I still have a hard time giving this a 4 star review. It looks like a sick show on paper, especially the second set, but it was not played all that well. A lot like the Music>Sugaree>Music from 7/2/94, it looks awesome, but it just wasn't THAT hot. 4-/3+
Upon another listen, I feel that the front stretch of the second set is strong, with the exception of the lyrics to Terrapin, which Jerry pretty much obliterates. The remainder is pretty average IMHO.

i was there. I taped it. blessed to have seen that Fire
Nothing is 77 but 77, or 74, or whatever. IMO, This show was among the last of the true Dead shows. Listen to that lone Fire On The Moutain, it's lead-in is like nothing I've heard, even in 77 Fires. It is unique and I am blessed to have seen that moment when Jerry just did it... Fire On The Mountain. Fire On the Mountain it was. Lone Fires are actually somewhat rare and infrequent if you look at the stats... Just remember, God blessed this earth when Jerry's Mom Gave Birth..

second set saves the day
wasted first set. The althea is of the "through the motions" variety with very little Jerry creativity. The other 35mins is filler.
Second set picks up with the Eyes>fire combo. Corrina sounds like cats in heat due to jerry's vocals.

Summer Day
I've always loved this first set. Its short but very sweet. I had an aud tape of this since the show and it sounded so liquid. The feeling of it gave you was like water pouring down your back.
The board, honestly, doesn't do justice to the way it felt at the show. A nice summer night, a soft breeze, opening with Here Comes Sunshine, then through Bird Song. It was really beautiful. The second set, for 94 standards, is also quite good.
Here's to feeling nostalgic...
