the blazing opener. And I do agree Donna is in tune with the band. (These laid back versions of F.O.T.D. take some getting use to but if you notice they increase the tempo the deeper they get into the tune) The sound is very thick and even fat almost like a 'ska' vibe to this show. I really have not listened to very much from 78 so I don't have a lot to compare this too but I very much like what I hear. PASSENGER-Always liked this tune, very unique "What is a man, deep down inside What a raging beast with nothing to hide" If you can't give Donna some love on this tune you probably never will. Everyone getting busy... The Grateful Dead in motion!!! "The only game in town" CANDYMAN-Jerry switches gears,,, Always thought this was a great Ladies choice song. "Pretty lady ain't got no friend til the Candyman comes round again" Such the mellow tune. Cassidy-How in the world could this tune clock in at 5:10 ? Oh I see they don't pursue the internal open ended jams within the song rather they rock hard and make quick transitions instead of fleshing them out. Hard to say which I prefer this way I get more urgency to the song. PEGGY-O ---Jerry just throwing down the ballads. Not a gallop or marching step here.(just that thick full sound) Me and My Uncle> Big River-Many people think of these as 'cowboy tunes' but really I find 'Crazy Fingers' and 'Half Step' to be every bit as much cowboy tunes. So perhaps it is more they are Weir's cowboy tunes. But these tunes are not done acapella the whole band except Donna are along for the ride. And really anything that Jerry can noodle his way thru is worth hearing! This has been a very good 1st set not way over the top so they are spent but not so mellow that they have no mojo going for set two. End of Big River is fired up. That jam just before the final lyric. That is what I want to hear, the band grooving everyone raring to go. DEAL- Can you ever go wrong with this as a set closer, I think not. As long as you can dance, even if it is the privacy of your own mind, You are good to go. Donna back in the mix. I like the way Jerry is singing backing vocals on a tune in which he is already singing lead vocals on. Some great ensemble singing Bob and Donna want to scream, Heck Jerry is screaming too. WOW!!! Set Two SAMSON- I am just a fool for this tune, Drummers give this song such the heavy dance step. This is perhaps one of my favorite Weir tunes. Not sure why it got relegated to Sunday's only? Love Jerry's riff in this song. If you know the biblical story behind this tune to me Jerry's riff tells the rest of the story you don't get from the lyrics. Also so much history here. this all takes place in GAZA the same sliver of land still in the news to this day. But mostly was this not the best dance tune! Jerry back with another ballad. So we peak and then we come down. makes for a wonderful show. THE ROSES- another very special tune that got pretty rare in the later years. "One pane of glass in the window" Oh YEAH! Making love together in a land time forgot... ESTIMATED- This is the tune that best fits the sound of this show. "And I will call down thunder and speak the same and might and glory , gonna be my name" JAM INTO HE'S GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hot as a pistol but??????????????????? COOL inside. EVERYTHING GRAVY AFTER THIS. 18 minutes of Drumz Great SPACE with OTHER ONE deeply interwoven Other1>Wharf>Around Note: Werewolves encore- At some point in this tune I think I hear Donna Jean go YIKES! This is such a funky version of this song. JERRY sounds as if he is just gonna float away with the final lyrics... PHIL-"Thank You and good night" What a show!

why I love this stuff, and I'm a second set kind of guy. The subtlety of a lullaby mixed with a runaway train. I can only imagine what this must have sounded like in the flesh. Stop what you're doing and get this one now.

playing this is up there w/ June 9 '77 Winterland, Sunshine Daydream, Fox Theatre-Dave's Picks. Wouldn't be surprised if this one got an official cd w/ time base correction. It deserves official release. I love this show #2 set so much I compare all other versions of songs herein; for energy and feeling this one is played the very best. Thank you so much DG and CM for sharing and the hard work.

Grateful Dead release. and for a broke boho like me, this site is the only way i can afford to listen to the Dead) but then i heard the Deal and just couldn't help myself. By far the highest energy Deal i've ever heard these folks shred on. Also, this has got to be one of the finest "Donna" shows i've chanced to stumble upon. For the most part, she sounds great in the mix and keeps the wailing to a minimum. 4 stars just for Donna on this one.

left...Donna's voice actually hits the mark...***If you are a fan of good sounding recordings or of the Spring '78 shows, this is a must have***...I have become quite a fan of the Spring '78 run and I am collecting them...and even within that great wealth of selections this one stands out...I am not going to bore you with the "and I was there" stories because I wasn't there...and I am glad that I wasn't there because I was just about to finish high school up in Michigan (within reach of many of those shows), and it's darn good thing that I wasn't a Deadhead yet because I managed to graduate with just ½ of a credit to spare...Spring tour would not have been conducive to a timely graduation :-) Thank goodness that we have this archive.

Gone. One of my favorite versions that I've heard. It's very relaxed, but with great vocal performances from both Jerry and Donna. The ooh ooh oohs at the end are very soulful, almost ghostly. Some versions it sounds to me as if they're trying their best to bring him back, as it were. This time it sounds like a sort of mournful acceptance. Beautiful vocal interaction between Jerry, Bob and Donna. Drums are out of control. I usually only like the drums if I can dance to them; this one's interesting enough just to listen to. Not my favorite set list, but it has some of my favorites. Can't mark it down for that. Five for sound and style.
