they all certainly have their moments (like 6/10's great DS or the He's Gone>Truckin>TOO>Eyes from 5/26). The only performance i find to be really compelling throughout is 6/22. But, once again, I digress... Listen to this for a beautifully mellow bird song, a great Cumberland, Row Jimmy, Black Peter and a really interesting Eyes. I find the Dark Star and Playin' to be a bit too sleepy though; they just never seem to take off.

to be played with aplomb. DARK STAR>Eyes>Stella is executed with the grace & attention a suite like it deserves. I had to give the show 4 STARS as a whole, because Jerry is too low in the mix on some songs---hell, the whole mix isn't what it could/should be.

a different date each night, one of whom later became my wife, while the other two remain close friends to this day. I had only seen the Dead once before, Dec. 15, 1972 in Long Beach, so this was my first true immersion into the Dead Show Experience. The thing I remember most strongly was how blown away I was by the laid back rapport and communication that the band had with the audience, without saying a word. In fact, the only bit of stage banter from this entire run is between Cumberland Blues and Row Jimmy. The reason for it is that during the Cumberland Jams a small but bright and quite visible electrical fire started to grow in the lighting trusses over the stage above Bobby's amps. You could see some people pointing and, given the percentage of psychedelics prevalent in those days, there was potential for some freak-outs. But, perfectly on cue and with just the right cheery inflection, Jerry stepped up to the center microphone and said "Everybody just relax, it's the Movies-Right!" No sooner had the words left his mouth than the flames flickered and disappeared, accompanied by general applause and much amazement. And with that the boys went back to work.

to be one of the most electrifying versions of the song recorded and a very notable 20 minute version of Eyes where Kieth and Jerry show off their amazing interplay is tops. Jerry sears the soul in Stella Blue, singing very soft and soulful. Donna ruins Beat It On Down The Line singing characteristically spazzy and sounding off-key but fortunately it's only 3 brief minutes of punishment that is easy to take. A lackluster version of US Blues tacked to the end of this stream clearly doesn't belong on this recording (Saturday Night was the encore).

out of it seemingly just right. A solid 4 stars combined for sound and play....One note...this U.S. Blues, I dont know when its from but it sure aint this show. The boys are tune down from the first note all the way through Saturday night and then are in standard on that U.S. Blues. Who has a good answer for this one?

soon as the Dark Star is getting a little too violent, the Eyes comes along and says "Hey buddy, no need to be mean, leave the poor kid alone", and makes everyone smile and dance. This show has a plethora of other highlights: Playin', Bird Song, Cumberland, Stella Blue, etc. One of my favorite shows from one of my favorite years (I say that about every show I review).

Peter is touching. Dark Star is played very slow and tight, and at times Garcia is barely audible, very tranquill Star,and very nice. I like how they cut the chaos section right when it was getting intense and pick up Eyes. Eyes delivers the jams of this show, with Jerry taking about 10 different paths after the vocals. Keith even lays down some good groovy work towards the end. the transition to Stella is pretty nice, but the ending of Blue is very mellow. pretty good recording, little hiss, and Jerry isnt out front very much. Good use just a bit more Bob too in the mix.

shine. The Playin is typically great for 1973, and the Dark Star>Eyes>Stella Blue combination puts this one over the top for me. Very unique jams. And BTW, the Wall of Sound seems to work pretty well tonight. Nice quality. An overlooked show that will knock you out! I'll bet you've got a friend that hasn't heard this one, turn them on. Dr. Flashback ;-)
