Candidate for show of the century, and the Allman Brothers opened up to boot. Id trade all my tomorrows for one single of this yesterday

They were musicians musicians.

Possibly the greatest show the Grateful Dead ever played. This is a 3-set, 4-CD monster with so many great jams. Highlights include a passionate Morning Dew to kick it off, Birdsong, Playin', a very long Eyes, Here Comes Sunshine, and of course, Dark Star. The end of the second set isn't really any slouch either. But wait! There's a whole hour-long set coming with members of the Allman Brothers Band, who played earlier that afternoon, joining in on a collection of covers that includes a 13 min+ hot take on the Kings' "That's All Right, Mama." The sound is great, too -- this is the rare 73-74 soundboard where you can easily hear all the instruments, including Bob's guitar.

What a generous show, too! The Dead part of the show is already 3 1/2 hours, then there's an over one-hour set with the ABB guys, and that's not counting sets by somebody or some band called Wet Willie plus ABB in the afternoon (according to Deadbase). All together, it was probably at least 7 hours of music, stretching from mid-afternoon until around 2:30 AM! What major venue would let a band play until 2:30 AM these days? Most of them have 11:00 PM curfews (thanks, Clear Channel!). And how much did folks pay for the show, even adjusted for inflation? Probably a lot less than in 2023 as well.

I was 15 years old & took a Greyhound Bus from Birmingham Alabama to DC to see the Dead for my first time. I was invited backstage. Because I was blown away because of my good fortune, I was like in awe. Garcia sat down at a table where I was sitting alone. I don't recall him saying anything... But he pulled out a joint from his shirt pocket, fired it up & passed it to me. I didn't say anything either. At the time I worshiped Jerry Garcia and I was so taken with my good fortune to sit within 5 feet of him that I couldn't think of anything to say.

I had a great time & wandered through the crowd, making my way backstage an hour or so later. A roadie with the Allman Brothers shared a little Cocaine with me. It was a good time.

Now technically there is no top #1 Grateful Dead show. Many will say Cornell 1977, and the lists goes on and on and on. I agree it is up there but so is this gem of a show! They were both from different eras, but this great audio sounding, great band playing, great set list of songs, really rocks. I hope someday Dave or the Grateful Dead release, Grateful Dead live at RFK Stadium June 10, 1973 commercially...

There is no contest between the Mad and Hungry. Lies will corrupt even the most honest of people. And, eventually spit out their heart, bleak from guilt. When you close your eyes to hear this show, or walk about your Day, remember that we are all being lead through time with such Mercy. Played out for us all to hear in one way or another. I don’t shrink to the call of the Dead. I rise up to meet them and embrace each song as their first. Similar to the previous day (1973-06-09, RFK Stadium), what guidance is also found might as well be the continuation of thoughts laid to rest. By the morning, another path is taken — might have been less traveled, who’s to say. I know what I’ve seen.

And, yet, I was not there. I have never felt the light of the Dead play to me so sweetly in the flesh. I did not experience a single Tour from the 1970’s. I don’t know that Love. What remains, but the stories? That’s all I could ever ask for, and in some way, the life I live here in this time, is impacted forever because of those simple, unique experiences all of us take upon. It’s a choice to be Alive, a simple decision to Lead ourselves on a path toward Salvation.

In paticular 'Going down the road' What a solo! I can get lost in his playing for hours.

Came here for the “Eyes”...it was everything I dreamt it would be and more.

This was my third show, (yes, I'm getting old) -I'd already been enveloped in the joy of the day before, got some good photos that day. Sunday was a very special afternoon and night- I'll never forget it. The performance live was definately better than what you get from the SNBDs loaded here. They were so ON I was in heaven. I drifted here and there only about 30 ft. from the stage, dead center. Listening to the first few bars of this Morning Dew again literally gives me goosebumps. The day before was amazing, and I hardly expected them to surpass it, but they did.
I'm a big fan of Birdsong, largely for the jams they did within it, and this one is the longest I know of...beautifully rendered. Playin'ITB follows to end the first set, and by this time it was completely dark...and we all got a mind-blowing surprise. Right when the final bars of Playin' started, the finale, someone (Healy?) in the sound booth out in the audience set off some major fireworks high into the night sky. So, during the final chords of the song, we get this visual extravaganza, everybody with their heads tilted back, gazing up in major euphoria.
Even though a bit of the magic from how extremely "together" they were is lost in these recordings, it's still a great stream, especially Charlie's transfer. Buy yourself a really good desktop stereo if you haven't already, and enjoy!

This is one of the best live concerts! The recordings are also good.

I attended this show and actually got in "free" for picking up a bag of trash after the 6-9 show. It did cost me $5 the day before to bribe a street urchin to show us a gate where the security guard had fallen asleep, but that's a different story altogether.

After all these years, it's still one of the two best shows I ever saw from any artist. The "regular" portion of the show was so good that the jam with most of the ABB was almost an anticlimax. Almost, but not quite...

This is such a profoundly sweet jam. Words fail like that lame seagull on the show flyer to your left fails to capture the beauty of a bird in flight. Dancing about architecture or farting about particle physics, forget it and just enjoy that special groove.

i get that ones opinion does not account for the belief of many but that just like a library there is a place for everything keep it in that place if u cant respect that then ask how i can or anyone of like mind to teach you be open alll. back to the music now...love is all

I give this show one star because the Dead lied to me, there was no promised land. In fact after they started to play the song I climbed up on the back and hoisted myself up onto the head of a big bald headed guy to take a look to see the promised land, and I don'y think he like that because he shook me off and I ended up to my eyeballs in Holy Joe O'Conner's giant cherry flavored snow cone. It was a real bummer man, I was a sticky and all the dogs started to lick my face.

there was so much smoke at this show. this is about the time jerry really started to struggle with pain killers and was trying to write shakedown street. that's what shakedown street is about and many people don't know. about being hooked on pain pills and not being able to shake it off - so like, shakedown street means you can't get of them pain pills. all that to the sides though jerry kicked long enough to record from the mars hotel and you could tell cuz the playin was really clean.

A friend turned me onto this site and ive been amazed. However, I'm not all that up to speed with technology. The main issue I'm encountering is that I've noticed I was able to upload some of my content and download certain content from my laptop. However, I doesn't seem like I can do anything from my Android phone. So when I'm on here like now and find this gem of a recording but don't know what to do. Any advice would be much appreciated.

That I was in attendance for and only a sweet 16 teenage boy. I don't remember too much of the actual show, but it was hot and humid and my first drag of "grass." I hope this show gets officially released soon. One of my many favorites.

Free form funk freak out. Turn this the fuck up. The Playin'. I kinda pity the freaks who were peaking during that. I also kinda envy them.

Everyone's in top form here. Jerry's prob mixed a tad high here for my taste on the jams, but it's not like he's playing wrong notes or anything. Bobby's flanged guitar sound is the juicy peach, spurtin all over the place. Jerry tries to decoratively lay his creamy wah on top and succeeds often enough ....

Put on your dancing shoes, turn on your lovelight and luxuriate in the beauty.

One of my favorite tunes...and this one is funky funky funky. One of my favorites so far. June 9th version was good, but June 10th had me dancing in my chair at work. Transported me to a happier place.

I love the sound of this one. The song list is gigantic and wonderful. This show seems to combine all of the Dead's best qualities, eras, influences, and moments. Simply breathtaking. Check out PITB.

I too love 1973. Maybe I love the years before I saw them. But I saw a few shows in 1974 and they were great, too. Still, set list, building from a hot afternoon to incredible jams, Dickey Betts, the transitions, well this show is one of the finest I have heard. Wish I had been there.

Talk about setting the tone for the show, and Garcia was in such good voice. They had so much good material and boundless energy. Amazing show!

want to hear the Dead at their finest? Look no further! Back when they played three hour (or more) shows, 25 minute jams. It simply does not get much better than this!

1973 is one of my favorite Dead era's and this show is a great representation of this year. The first set has a diverse mix of songs. Morning Dew kicked off the night and the energy level continued to grow with BIODTL. I dig any Wave That Flag simply because of the contextual importance it had to the Dead's repertoire, eventually becoming US Blues.

A particularly brain melting Playin' with one of the best Eyes ever performed following. Eyes is very jazzy and upbeat with crisp keys providing the perfect background for Jerry to play to. The keys are so prominent it's almost approaching ragtime. This is exactly what makes 73 great though, there's such a variety in the playing. It seems almost wrong to love the keys so much especially because this show is so close to Pigpen's death in the Dead's chronology. His death, while a somber event, marked the point at which the Dead were really able to explore their sound without being pushed in a blues/ rock n roll direction instead of their preferred psychedelic sound.

For me, the highlight of the show is Dark Star. Jerry's playing is bouncy with the perfect amount of echo. Phil is definitely on phire in this Star. Another jazzy rendition as well. I want to point out the incredible jam starting around 6 minutes but really picking up at 7:30. My first time hearing this Dark Star I was absolutely blown away by this playing. I stopped what I was doing, turned it up all the way, and just let those chords pass right through me. Easily one of the most unique jams in a Dark Star. Reminiscent of Allman Bros in my opinion, interestingly enough they were actually at this show and joined them for the third set. Phil takes off around 10 minutes with Jerry's notes seeming to fall from the sky and land like droplets onto Phil's sea of almost tangible bass notes. Gosh, another great moment that just screams Allman Bros is at 12 minutes and ends when they get into the song at 13:30 or so. The band settles into a nice groove here as Jerry sings the first verse. I love how Phil becomes the focus at so many points during this song, especially at 17 minutes. The 20 minute mark turns a little spastic and takes them into a really bizarre, abstract jam that solicits one or two yells from heads in the crowd (maybe they knew an excellent He's Gone was up next) but doesn't do much for me personally. With that being said, this top performance of Dark Star comes to a subtle close and the band creeps into He's Gone.

The crowd claps along to He's Gone, totally into it. Again Phil's bass slaps me in the face at the 10 minute mark in this song. I'm not quite sure what the loud cracking noise that pops up occasionally throughout this show- sounds almost like a slapstick or even fireworks. Regardless, the jam into Wharf Rat is just as beautiful as this particular rendition.

Once again the crowd claps and sings along as the band breaks into a quick paced Truckin'. Sugar Magnolia, as opposed to some other performances, is well developed and pretty tight. No matter what Sugar Mag puts me in a good mood. The set ends with Promised Land. For me, no top show from 73 is lacking in a killer Chuck Berry song.

The whole third set with the Allman Bros is a classic in my opinion. Warren Zevon once said, "Enjoy every sandwich" and the NFA>GDTRFB>NFA from this show is certainly a sandwich to be enjoyed.

All in all an excellent show. One that appeals to all sorts of Deadheads who all have their own favorite eras and songs. Likewise, this is a show which seems to appeal to all sorts of music lovers. The Dead transition so fluidly from rock riffs to jazz grooves to spacey, surrealist jams in this show it will make most people smile at one point or another. I was left smiling almost the whole show, for that I award it 5 stars.

One of my all time favorite versions of eyes,this is my first time on this website,almost brought me to tears to hear this amazing sound quality, I wish I was there around these times to see this magic

One thing I remember about the show was how hot it was (this was an afternoon show). I managed to exit to the parking lot and convince one of the gatekeepers to allow me to bring in my cooler filled with beer, soda and water.

This show ranks up there as one of the all time performances IMHO. From the Dew opener to the JBG closer this show is hot hot hot. Dickey Betts adds another dimension to the last songs and makes them shine in ways not often heard. Crank it up and enjoy the ride!

This was my 2nd show, and one of the first ones I listened to when I got here...Mostly I've fixated on EYES...*I* think it's a really hot performance...Garcia was well on his way to becoming a JAZZ guitarist IMO...as of now I've only successfully downloaded one show (Hollywood Palladium 8/6/71) but that's ok, I'm satisfied...

Delicious, warts and all; like the best lover you ever had. Can you see Dickie Betts or Jerry Garcia using note correction software, lip-syncing or air guitar? Didn't think so.

Thanks for taking me way back to the days of yore, where up in northern Minnesota, closer to Canada than Saint Paul, we knew when we saw the Northern Lights it meant we could drive out of town to the woods somewhere and drink, smoke and tune into AM Rock-N-Roll from Chicago Land Radio...while taking the local radio likes of Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn for granted, but HEY MAN it was PARTY TIME!!!...so OK, very local: you had to be quiet cuz it didn't sound so good loud on car radio broadcasting 800 miles away, plus sounds carry over water, ice, all year, sister, and who wants to be busted, etc...

And so, today, as I lean in to my laptop to absorb each & every note,chord, phrasing, everything of this unbelievable gem, while my neighbors and passing cars outside are blasting and booming everything under the sun for all to hear,...I am grateful, truly grateful, for this experience.

Grew up going to the free shows in GG Park. Saw tons of shows til JG's untimely death. Marin Co. Ca. was the place to be for excellent music in the 60,70,80's...count myself to be incredibley fortunate to have grown up there...

Probably my favorite of all the shows I attended. Somebody mentioned the Watkins Glen show. I hitched up there Friday. They jammed Friday night, but disappointed Saturday. I think the weather was too hot for them. The Band was great, the Allmans were also very good.

This RFK show was complete, and just kept getting better as it went on. The jam with the Allmans was really special. I'd love to burn this to a CD. Anybody have an EASY way to do it? I'm not as savvy as my kids.

For all of you folks out there who are not aware of the 26th song--"That's Allright Mama" on, is a jam with The Allman Brothers Band!! We went to the Watkins Glen show on July 28th that summer. The Dead opened right on time at Noon, followed by The Band, with The Allman Brothers playing last. But, after they finished their set, it was followed by a MONUMENTAL JAM with a compilation of some of the BEST MUSIC EVER PERFORMED!!! I was one of the lucky few who got to see The Allman Brothers open for The Grateful Dead at The Fillmore East in Feb. of 1970 and again in March of 1971, with Duane when they recorded the famous "Live at the Fillmore East". Some 40 years later i can still see Jerry and Dicky Betts standing next to each other jamming!!! That show ended at about 1:30 in the morning at Watkins Glen Speedway!!!

It sure would be worth something to me! I have yet to get my hands on the magic of a hard ticket from back in the day. I was one of the unfortunate souls born A.J. (after jerry) so now all I have the joy of doing is listening, loving, and spreading the sweet jam that is Grateful Dead. But that's enough for me i suppose ;)Do you not want your ticket?

Remembering this concert. It was very hot, the temps and playing, about 110 on the field. Water hoses cooling folks. Does anyone else remember Looks like Rain then Box of Rain, and in the middle of Box of Rain, a cloud came and sprinkled everyone for about 30 seconds, then moved on?? Maybe the boys saw clouds approaching from their stage view, facing northwest, and we (the audience) saw only clear hot skies facing south....and they rearranged the songs? One of my favorite shows. That little outro at the end of Goin' Down the Road had the same 2 chord progression as Fire and some similar runs, but it was probably just coincidental. Bob's guitar fills actually sounded more like a Cryptical Reprise tease.

Nonetheless, though not perfect this recording is quite an improvement over my old cassette and the show is a classic. It would have been nice to have been there then; 7/7/86 was....rough.

I never got to see the Dead live. I've only been so lucky as to see PHISH many times. I download a show every two days and alot of the times I go by the reviews you guys post. Thank you for taking the time. As far as the guy talking about all sorts of things that go on in the "hood" in D.C. Please leave the reviews to people who care about the music and am guiding me in the right way. Not a concert goes by I don't wish I could be there. Wishing Furthur would come down near Oklahoma. spent a gorgeous weekend afternoon listening to this beaut, coincidentally 29 years to the day after the show. superb setlists, spectacular playing. grab this one, it's among the best of the many, many dead performances i've heard (& i'm usually more of a '68-'69 guy).

Im surprised at the amount of negative reviews for this show. It seems to really devide Heads. I happen to love this show. I will agree that some 73 shows have better audio quality, but the overall groove of this show is undeniable. Its a long trip, but great to listen to all the way through, and when the Allmans come in to cap it off, well, I just love it.

i was sitting down with a couple of friends, and showing them the archive, specifically the dead section, and we came across this here set, and so i played it to show them the extraordinary quality of the soundboard recordings (we're kind of new age deadheads), and after sitting back for the length of the show, just talking and playing cards, we decided then and there to start up a Grateful Dead tribute band like so many have before.

We've got a couple small shows booked as of now, and we're jamming almost every day and having a blast, like the good ol' jerry would want us to. Dead Music makes me such a happy person.

I cant see a weak link in this show all of the songs are done great its just one of the best shows ever.

There are several posts on this show who totally knock it and say it isn't that great. I can only ask, Did you even listen to it? I mean really, this show rocks. Godchaux's playing is stellar, in Playing in the Band, Eyes of the World, Around and Around. It just blows my mind. The energy is there, and it sounds like they are having a lot of fun. To me this show definitely rates 5 stars. To those of you who think it is lacking, stop smoking and listen to it with your real ears. :) Peace.

Jerry and Phil playing back and forth during Bird Song and Billy jammin all day and keith and bobby jammin in the back doesn't make it much better. Not to mention the Allman join the 3rd set this is one of their best shows. Get it NOW

What a great year for the Dead. This wasn't the best of the year but how great is it to hear the Dead and the Allmans jam together? Two worlds colliding make this a Dead classic.

BTW, The set list should read Wave That Flag->US Blues->Wave That Flag. Ha!

We drove down from UMASS. Saturday Dead came on mid afternoon it was hot as heck bright sun 90's. Early in the set a lady climbed up on stage and handed Jerry a big red rose stem. Jerry put it between his death playing "Deal". IT was truly a love fest no problems or violnece. The people on the infield were baking in the hot sun they turned on the fire hoses and began spraying the crowd. We moved up into the stands under the roof out of the sun.
Allmans came on that evening and played a great set. Sunday Wet Willie then Allmans then Dead.
Betts and Trucks? joined the Dead about mid night and jammed for another 1 1/2 hours. A lot of the crowd had left we moved down right in front of the stage. Jerry was just plucking away looking into the eyes of Dickie never once at his own guitar just that big smile and rolling eyes. It was wild. Our ride had to leave before midnight to return his fathers car so he could get to work. We slept on the grass outside the stadium that night. 4 am on a Sunday night and there are these little kids on bicycles riding around chit chatting with us. We managed to get a ride to NYC the next morning from a kid that had slept in his car all night. Hitched back to UMass from NYC.
A lot of people might criticize this show but the temps were so hot and the cavernous stadium does not allow for great acoustics. The show was memorable and fantastic. The indoor shows from that era had better sound but not the spirit of this event. IMHO the Dead were at their best from 1971 - 1977. Although I never saw them pre 1971.

Nice sound quality. I don't review the performance. You be the judge.I've been wanting to review the sound quality of these shows for quite some time. I kept a list and now that I have a lot of free time(retired last month) I'm going to do just that. By the way D.C. does suck! When the Good Lord decides to give the world and enema he's gonna stick it in D.C.

And what we have here is a gem of a recording from a gem of a show. It took the band a little while to find its groove after Pig Pen's departure and subsequent death. We hear them starting to hit their stride again at this monster gig at RFK.

Great performance and great quality sound.

Wake of the Flood tunes were nice, as was Dew. But I've yet to hear anything later than spring of '72 that rates five stars. How can this compare to February '69 ("Live/Dead")?

I am English (living in England) and of an age that I should have caught these guys live, at least once, but never did.

Well this is one of the first shows i ever got from the archive (along with 5/9/77) and while i loved it, after many careful listens, i've come to realize that this isn't quite as good as i once thought...the band is just having a pretty off night for the most part. now i don't mind a few tiny flubs here and there, but when they are making so many obvious mistakes (such as in Ramble on Rose, Row Jimmy, Bird Song and Eyes) and are just downright sloppy (Truckin') i hesitate to call this a great show.

I don't want to completely dump on this one though, there are certainly many great moments, such as the monumental versions of Playing in the Band and Dark Star found here, some of the best of the year. Phil is fantastic in both.

The Dark Star especially is wonderful, where he takes a long solo. After Lesh's solo comes a really unique passage with him and jerry driving the band towards a very melodic and jazzy jam right before the 1st verse.

And there are also really nice versions of Here Comes Sunshine, Stella Blue, Hes Gone, and also They Love Each Other, which i mentioned in my previous review.

The 3rd set with the Allmans is what elevates this show to 4 star material, containing classic jams including the only That's Alright Mama and a great NFA>GDTRFB.


But like i said before, this show is a perfect example of why Spring and Fall '73 are so much better than Summer.

I have to say that I don't remember anything about the concerts at all. I remember sleeping out in the parking lot overnight with some friends. Some of us had hitched down to D.C. from NYC and then met up with the people with the van. But there were a lot of Dead concerts in those days -- Madison Square Garden, and then a place I can't even remember the name of just upstate NY, others..... Many others, maybe it's why my memory is gone, huh?

Sweetmp3, I was there with two vans full of friends, and we all saw that rainbow in the mist of the tiny cloud, and the music seemed to respond to the sight. I also saw a few lighting bolts, but that's sleep deprivation. There were problems very early Sun. morning, people running around the outside walk of the stadium and lot of yelling for help ? We were with out phones then, and it was a ghetto, so we hunkered down in the vans. Great show though, Wet Willie, whew, he really soaked his satin outfit, Crazy dude, blew us all away, when we were peaking. I remember taping the faucet on the very top row with a small vice grip. It was hot and muggy, and the garbage trucks down below looked like giant cockroaches come to nibble on the stadium, and the uneven roof looked like it was slowly revolving. It had to be the second day for the rainbow, because we were in front of Dicky Betts and Greg the day before sipping on johnny walker red.

in 73 i was 10 so obviously never saw this show but a song or 2 on here are the smokinest versions ive ever heard especially here comes sunshine if anyone knows of a better one let me know ill definately give it a listen the Dark Star not too bad either although i think the Cleveland one from the same year is slightly better and always dug the 73 Big Rivers too although this isnt their best

Surprising how hyper-critical many are of this show. Decades ago I enjoyed the 'best of' compilation on the two 90-min cassettes that were commonly traded (with the filler of a couple repeats from the same show--anyone remember this?!?). Listening to the full show for the first time was incredible. Agreed, the first set has few memorable moments: Jerry's improv on Wave is a lot of fun and Race is a treat. The second set features stunning renditions of Eyes and Sunshine. As for the third set, sure, Dick(e)y Betts isn't Duane Allman. And Keith isn't Tom; Brent isn't Pig Pen, etc. BFD. Could you ask for a better That's Alright Mama??? And that's only the warm-up for a 21-min NFA-GDTRFB with Jerry and Dickey trading solos as if they've played together their entire lives. Wow! Something very special!

I actually prefer '74 but there's just not enough material available.

They really do slaughter Ramble, and half of Row Jimmy, though the latter they pull together nicely at the end. Somebody said Lazy...and I have to agree, at least the first half of the show. Certainly not the apathy we've come to expect from an otherwise energetic year.

But, we take the good with the bad. This show is as much about quantity as anything. What band plays 30+ songs in a night? And don't count those new garbage radio emo kids' bands whose songs are all 3 minutes long and lip synced.

Good Train to Cry, nice, exploratory Eyes, and great but brief Race is On. All in all, A+, for effort if nothing else.

PS-Take it from a published poet and college English teacher...that's NOT poetry. You could write that by spilling your refrigerator magnets. Super 73' Soundboard!

5 stars for the mix, recording, performance & transfer.

We piled into Mason's car and drove from Brooklyn to DC. RFK Stadium was huge. Filled to the brim with DEAD Heads, an ocean of hot sweaty bodies baking in the sun. I can't remember who came on first, I think the GRATEFUL DEAD played all day, and the Allman Brothers played all night...a memorable show...I still have my ticket from the show.

After the show we got lost in the "hood" trying to get out of DC...I told Mason, don't stop at the red lights man...keep drivin!!! Our car was being pelted with garbage, drinks, rocks...I said Drive man, drive!

I highly recommend adding this show to your 1973 GRATEFUL DEAD collection.

It was my first Greatful Dead concert and it was the best. What's not to like about the Greatful Dead and The Allman Brothers, both in their prime and rocking all day and into the night? Man I was worn out but enjoyed every minute and don't remember much about how I drove back to Richmond that night.

It was hot and I was with Leslie S. I was drunk. My first real drunk show. Blacked it out and wound up in a bus terminal somehow.
May have got back to Leslie’s house with her family.
Took until 87 to sober up and not drink. This was the first of many shows where I cannot remember much. Now you ask me about 4/29/71 and I am all there. Beware of John Barley corn.

This is the only outdoor Dead show I was able to see, wow. There is nothing like it, none of the other 10 or 12 shows I saw compare. Sitting in the infield about 60 yards from the stage was truly a Dead experience! You had to be there.

One of the most overrated shows ever. Want primo 73? You know what to get. There are a few nuggets here, but they are far and few

you just can't compare this to other shows. Its one of a kind and needs to be in every heads library. Bird song is a gift of life and enchantment...a hint of the allman magic down the line!

Good show, but far from being the best show from '73. The hype surrounding this show is a bit much. The sound is sometimes a little iffy and the band's performance on some of the material isn't all that. Not that it's bad mind you, far from it, but the first set is fairly average with only Bird Song and Playin' being stand outs. You can skip all the other songs and you wouldn't be missing much. The band picks up some steam for the second set which is much better than the first and contains some real gems. The third set with Dicky Betts and Butch Trucks is smoking. Maybe people really like this show because of it's marathon length and all the extra booklets/artwork it comes with? Which I find pretty cool myself. But as far as quality goes it's somewhere in the middle of the pack for 1973. I was initially disappointed because of all the hype this show gets, but what the hell? It's definitely worth a listen and I'm glad I was lucky enough to get it before the Archive stopped soundboard downloading. Check out 2/15, 2/22, 3/24, 5/26 and 11/17 for some more kick ass playing.

BTW check out the aud version of this show. The atmosphere missing from the soundboard is really present and it sounds like one hell of a party.

I was at this show and the previous day's show at RFK Stadium. Back then, the shows went on forever, and tickets were lik $10 or something! The Dead and Allman Bros would jam back and forth throughout the day. It was sunny and warm, and everybody was high! Man, those were the days. I was only 17 years old at the time, and had just graduated high school.

Disregarding a few blemishes on the reels, this is a great sounding show and I think it belongs in every deadheads collection.

Regardless who was alive or Dead! You had to of been there. We arrive late morning and the people were fantastic. The music started around 3pm and ended around 3am the next morning. The gates were knocked down around 5pm and final tally of concerts goers were well over 100k people that day. The final set was make up of members of both feature artist. The just don't do it like that anymore. The concert download should be view more for historical value then recording quality. IMHO - Regards S~

Really, I'm not trying to be a wise-ass, but I swear that this is the most downloaded show becasue people see "Allman Brothers" and don't realize Duane had died back in Oct. of 1971. Kinda like going to see "The Dead" thinking Jerry gone's be there. I'm sure people in attendance had a different experience than those of us just listening to these recordings, but there are just so many other shows in '73-'74 in which the recording is enough to nourish one's heart and soul --- for me this one just cannot compete with all the other gems. However, anytime Jerry sings "It Takes a Lot to Laugh..." deserves at least a three rating. -- AshesRising

As a fan of the Dead and the Allman Brothers, I think this show is kind of neat to hear, but I agree with the reviewers below; the sound quality is subpar for a '73 board, and neither band is at their best. For the Dead at their best that year, check out 2/9, 5/26, 9/11, 11/11, 11/17... I could go on.

Took a few weeks off and now it looks like the site has changed. Can't do what I used to be able to do with the soundboards. So close to hitting the century mark. Any suggestions?

I agree with bradcheng a few reviews ago, I don't really see what all the fuss is about with this show. I was really stoked when I downloaded this based on the excellent reviews. After the first few songs I was disappointed but kept listening. This lasted throughout just about the entire first set (with a few exceptions - They Love Each Other, Bird Song). I found the sound quality to be poor, maybe the worst quality I have heard from the archives and I have over 300 discs of GD music from archive.org. I also found the playing uninspired.

I will say that the 2nd set picks up a bit and there are great performances of Eyes of the World and Dark Star. I was actually jamming right along through He's Gone and then came Wharf Rat. This is without a doubt the worst performance of this song that I've heard.

The 3rd set (4th disc) has some memorable moments and some excellent jamming starting with "That's Allright Mama". This set really is excellent and is worth listening to or obtaining.

Overall, although there are some gems in this show (Eyes, Star, 3rd set jams), as a whole it is a poor performance with poor sound. I'm glad I have it for the few songs that really stand out. This show has gone from 4 discs to a 2 disc "highlights" disc for me.

2-star rating. For me, an "average" Dead show is worth 2.5 stars (not that average isn't worth listening to). Overall, start to finish, this show as a whole is below average. The first set gets no star, the 2nd gets 2.5 and the third gets 4.5, so in sum it's about a 2-star show with some outstanding highlights.

This show is hot and deserves to be able to be downloaded and enjoyed in places other than the computer!!

You have to sign up and then use the peer to peer network (DC++) in order to download it but someone is usually sharing it so you should be able to download it. It's not ideal but it's worth it to jam to this incredible show in the car, on the home stereo etc...

I was 17 and was turned on to the Dead by an older brother (among other things)who wanted to go to these two shows. They played two days at RFK. Wet Wille, Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead. The Dead closed one night and the Allman Brothers closed the next. I'm not sure which order. I of course had listen to the Dead on albums and " eight track " but never live. Eroupe '72 was the latest album. To say the least I was hooked. The jam with both bands on "First There is a Mountain" was a show stopper. As luck would have it I moved to Hampton Virginia in '76 and was lucky enough to see every show the Dead ( or Warlocks in '89, killer Dark Star,) ever played there. So this set brings back alot of good memories for a 50 year old Deadhed. The Wall Of Sound the Dead used in ' 73 added to the experience.

Well, I just couldn't have the last not raving review at the top...Surely one of my most memorable and seems like many others. Whether the great sunny weather, the pre and post encounters, or the 'box of rain' that really came down during the show and the song (I think this really happened, or maybe it was just a group thing). Anyway, am downloading now to sare with my 13 y.o. daughther to keep the legacy going...Peace, Rick

This show seems to have accumulated a rolling snowball of support behind it, but I don't understand why. I've never found it particularly impressive from any perspective - sound or performance. I've download about 60 shows and this is among my least favorites. I really love the Dead at the Old Renaissance Faire (which seems to have gone missing from the archive) for example. But I find this show very unimpressive.

This is, in my humble opinion, one of the top 5 shows to listen to.

This show sums up that title perfectly. Three sets of perfect music from one of the best periods of the Dead's career.
Three words: That's Alright Mama....holy cow. Just unreal jamming between Jerry and Dickie.

This was the first Gratefule Dead show for my wife and I. We got married a week later.

The show was enhanced for both of us and my mind was completely blown apart by the music. I had no idea why the music souned so strange at the time but Phil had his guitar wired each string to four huge stacks of speakers about 70 yards from the stage. He played with the stadium echo during Playing in the Band and I haven't been the same since. I can't speak for the experience of my wife but an interesting story evolved that day.


You did not need a ticket because after the Deadheads got in some of them opened the other gates. The stadium ultimately ran out of food so we tried to leave to eat during the break. When we got to one of the gates, a rent-a-cop says, "Where are you going?" Both of us freaked, turned around and walked back into the crowd. These rent-a-cops were riding around the RFK stadium on scooters and all Heads were toasted. It was scary and in our enhanced state we thought that they had decided to keep us all here for observation or something. We actually found a pay phone, called home to tell a friend who was to arrive for the show the next day and informed his girlfriend's uncle that they won't let you leave when once you get into the show.

A while later we found another gate to our liking and the guy let us leave as long as we knew we couldn't return. Out in the parking lot we managed to get lost, asked directions of another Deadhead who spouted something unintelligable that made perfect sense, we drove around the lot together our car and his in a vast maze. My wife to be were lost in that lot long enough to see before we left that there was a single cloud over RFK with a rainbow running through it.

Great show, But i feel i am entitled to all the free high quality recordings I want. I mean all these guys have ever done for me is open my eyes to a multitude of dimensions and bring me countless hours of mind bending/blowing experiences.Be GRATEFUL for all we have been given, the whinin has gotta quit.

The set list is pretty great, Donna seems on key, but Jerry's guitar playing seems a little sparse and lackluster. Not really bad, just a little lazy maybe. Good sounding tapes, fun enough show.

In That's Allright Mama? The distortion and licks sound rather un-Jerry like. It's hot to be sure, but I am wondering if they had any guest guitarist on stage with them?

This is an amazing show, but its incredibly long. Be prepared for a journey.

This is one of those holy grail shows...just don't start listening unless you have the time to complete it!

I just listened to this show in its entirety. What a show! My new favorite. Not a lot of vocals but the jams were sic. '73 was a very good year! Now if I can just figure out how to record the stream so I can put this on disc.

It is a crime that great shows like this one are no longer available for free download. Making the shows available in streaming format was a good shot toward trying to compromise, but there is still one huge problem. What becomes of those of us with dial-up who can't stream music without it stopping every 10 seconds or so to buffer? We just get left out in the cold while others continue to enjoy this incredible music.

I can't imagine anyone is impresed by your waste of space on this page. May sound a little harsh....but so is that drivel. This site is for reviews/comments/remembrences on Dead shows. this show is absolutely worth the download (if they get it running again like phil said they would!!)... it's got a few flaws (like the first part of BIODTL is missing), but it's a huge ass show, it's well played and its got a lot of heart. has one of my favorite jams in "it's alright mama". GET THIS if they put it up again, otherwise they might make an album out of it.

Really just a super show. Not the best...but really great and pretty special with Dicky and Butch sitting in for the last set. Not the best quality...sound is a bit thin for my taste...but hey. who cares? The show is so good it does not matter.

My old friend Robert T used to tell me about being at this show. God rest your soul Robert. How's the weed in heaven.

Best part of shows like these is I turned it on this morning at 7:30 when I got to work. Listening in between conference calls and interviews and meetings. In the background on some of the calls. It's now 3:30 and I feel like i've gone through the whole trip and deserve the big rock and roll finale. and maybe something cold in the parking lot is waiting for me. and Robert.

This showm simply put, ranks among the highest quality dead shows/experiences out there.

Throw the Allman Bros. in the mix, and you have a pure american classic.

Can't really say much more than already been said about this show.....it sends you places. The number of times I simply got lost in Bird Song and Eyes and Dark Star is uncountable.
The third set can certainly be a stand alone show of covers.
Everything about this show is pure brilliance.

I'm not going to add to anything that's been said about this show...the music speaks for itself & anyone who cares about American music ought to own this show. It's worth mentioning, and I hope archive.org doesn't have a policy against this, that the good folks at Sugarmegs -- tela.sugarmegs.org -- have the ABB's performance from this show. It's in real audio format, so you'll have to either record it to wave or use realplayer's premium burning service to get it to cd.

The ABB's sets aren't as flawlessly executed as The Dead's, but they're worth having all the same.

Well, I was at this show and I remember it like yesterday. Garcia was never more in command and loose.
Now that this download is available I can finally get rid of the 30 year-old nth generation, decayed bootleg cassette I have of this show.

no, i was not at the show. i wasnt born yet. but my first download/review. im more interested in sound quality. and since it was the most downloaded show, i thought id have nothing to lose. the sound is awesome, and the show is amazing. ill definitly be downloading some more shows. sound is awesome on this show

This show (June 9, 1973) was by far the most "out there" Grateful Dead show. I was there. This was my second (out of about 30) Dead concerts (my first was Baltimore Civic Center (9-72). This recording proves that listening to the Dead depends totally on your state of mind and mood. The first few times I heard it, I thought the sound quality sucked (was flat), then ... driving to the beach (about 3 hours) I listened to it with the background noise of wind through the windows (which in a strange way minimized the sound quality blemishes), and I was on a flashback to the state of mind while I was there that day in 1973. Garcia and Lesh are absolutely in a parallel universe (and universes parallel to each other as well) during the breaks on certain songs (They Love Each Other/Loose Lucy). These are songs I generally don't prefer. But it just proves that the Dead can inject a mindblast into the break of any songs they play (favorites or not). What is amazing about the Dead is after 30 years of listening to them, I have never tired of their music, and am always hearing something new I haven't heard in live performances that I have listened to a hundred times or more. As I said, Ithe music changes with your state of mind.

Not only is this show great, but Almans opened (Betts and Trucks played on 3rd set) and it was $7. Dark Star>He's Gone>Wharf Rat>Truckin is great. As well as Eyes>Stella. Oh hell, the whole thing is great. Give it a listen and enjoy.

A really fabulous Eyes of the World easing into Stella Blue -- a definate highlight. I love the fast They Love Each Other from this period. Also a great Bird Song. Jerry is hot all night, not just in the jam songs, but even on standards like Big River. A very interesting use of Jerry's wah-wah pedal on Here Comes Sunshine, which has also some nice Phil.

Only three months after Pigpen's passing and they're moving on into the next phase. Can't go back and can't stand still -- it made 'em great.

That's a heartwarming tale, but you have plenty of work ahead of you.

having used computers and the net for everything but music downloads, and losing touch with my dead shows(on cassettes)for several years, a recent discovery of an old tape (Palo Alto,'73) made me realize I needed to find my all time favorite show that I could only remember was also a '73 and had Eyes into Stella. So a google later I found the archive and immediately see this show as a prolific download! I am so happy I could pee myself!

I was very fortunate to have attended, in the summer of 1973, the June 9 & 10 shows at RFK, the Watkins Glen event, both shows (7/31 and 8/1)@ Roosevelt Stadium, and both shows @ Nassau Coliseum in September '73. The DC shows were my first, and although by many counts my total of shows (33) is small, that first summer was a doozer (doser?) I agree with Terrapin Brad - these shows were recorded so long ago that any artifact from them is a wonderful gift! The sound quality is what you want to hear - let the music play!

That's what I feel for this show. ...Just love it to peaces! I've been burning new bands from this site like a mad man for almost a year now, but I almost forgot how wonderful the Grateful Dead was. The other people who reviewed this show before me were complaining about sound quality. I think that's absurd! This recording was made over 32 years ago! Get a grip! What do you expect? Of course your microphones sound this good, but they weren't made over 30 years ago either. C'mon now, this show sounds great! It's older than almost everyone who'll be writing a review on it too. Thank goodness for archive, AND the Grateful Dead! I've listened to this show three times today and MAN I wish I could've been there! What a great time the lucky people must have had at this show! I couldn't POSSIBLY be more envious. At least I have it on disc.-Terrapinbrad

What a concert guys. This is not underated or overated it is just a damn nice show that calm's the soul when you need it most. Five hours of music is allways a comfort and it's even better knowing that it's the band you love. Can I say that that is a kickin birdsong. The sound is good very nice to listen to, this is a good year for the boys.

In my opinion, this show is decent. But for those who might be new to the Grateful Dead and have come to this show because of the high number of downloads, I would suggest trying the 5-8-77 Cornell show first.

That being said, the Thats Alright Mama is first rate. I think most of the second and third sets is pretty good, too.

Beginnings of "Beat it" and "Around" are cut and faded in. Large portions of the "Dark Star > Sugar Magnolia" segment are almost buried in the noise floor. A 2 db gain still doesn't help the vocals here. Wharf Rat could even be broadcast without the FCC going crazy over the language. My old SB MC is better than this...

Dought Dwane was there unfortunetly, Merl is sourced as being present, But the star in mix is Dicky, That's alright mama is hopping, i always thought that Goin down the road could easly extend into a Blue Sky seemlessly.
The Levels may not be cranked, but they are great, and should be of no reason not to download and enjoy, RFK, Kezar and Rosevelt sound like one big party to me : ) Butch Trucks on drums fits very well by the way with billy.

This is a good show with some very interesting moments, especially That's Alright Mama. I've heard JGB play this often, but have only heard the Dead play this version, and the improv by Jerry,Duanne and Dicky, wow! Unfortunately, the levels on this recording kind of blew. A lot of level problems!!! The show I would give 5 stars, but with the bad levels, I have to go with 3 stars. This would be an execellent choice for a Dick's Pick.

Truly a great show. If you have never had the chance to experience a Grateful Dead show like myself, this is a great one to listen to. The mp3 does it no glory, you have to go lossless to feel the awe of this show. I've listened to it at least three times in the last week. Its a great one.

This show is THE ONE!! I've heard 5-8-77, Veneta Oregon et al but this is smokin and this is a GREAT recording!!!! I could listen to the Eyes daily, the third set is off the chart also.

I'venever been to a dead show, but I'm old enough to have been to 'em going back to '70. It is a wonderful recording, and was a real turn on when I found this one today. There's enough out there with crappy sound and lousy shows, but if you're gonna download one, let be it. It's got to be the best dark star and eyes out there. (But I do like the eyes version on 'without a net' with marsalis on sax) Stella Blue is a poignant piece, with a soulful jerry on vocals. Beautiful.

Awesome Show! Great Playin', but check out the part about 00:01:50 into it lol. thats the one thing that bothered me throughout the show - oh well - all in all though, great show

Oh my oh my oh my. I've heard alot of the shows that get thrown around as "Best ever", but for my money, this is the best. Blows Cornell away, that's for sure. Anyhoo, I could write 10 pages on this show, and I probably will. Firstly, it's in D.C. in all hallowed RFK Stadium, which automatically makes it a contender for best show status (betcha didn't know that rule). Furthermore everything about this show is great. The Dark Star is in your face and smacks you around like the little girl that you are. So does the Playin'. And who's gonna argue with a '73 Eyes? Not me, because I would lose that argument (never doubt the oratory skills of a '73 Eyes). Furthermore, the third set with the Allman Brothers contains some of the sweetest music I've ever heard. The guitar interplay is unbelievable.

I love this show. You love this show. FIVE STARS!

Great sound, great tunes. Would be a 5 out of 5 but problems with track 2. (what the heck the rest of the show is wonderful) Not too sure what's going on w/ track 2 but if someone could help me out it'd be appreciated. Peace to all

6-10-73 iz the most popular show (they even made a tshirt for it ) and i can see why. the combination of song selection/sound quality/ musicianship/setlengths and all around coherence of the band makes it ONE of the best by far. The versions of RambleonRose,LooksLikeRain,BTW,Stella,HereComesSun,Eyes(25min+) for example, are some of the best I have ever heard. Well worth it 5 fo' sheezy. Booyakasha

This was the biggest "what if" show for me for years.June 9, 1973 was the first time I ever saw The Dead.I was 15 and first heard Europe 72 while stoned a couple of months earlier.(Talk about a life changing event)
What if I hadn't dosed so hard on Saturday?(Third time I had dosed,first time I really got off)What if I had picked up a bag of trash that day?They handed out free tickets to the Sunday show to those that did.What if I had known I would see The Dead 201 times over the next twenty-two years?
Well now I know what I missed.Never mind the recording quality,it was 1973 after all.Three sets.Merl and the ABB.First Train To Cry of seven.First That's All Right Mama of two.Last Wave That Flag.Box Of Rain to soon dissappear for thirteen years.Here Comes Sunshine played for another year until it dissappears for eighteen years.And oh yeah Morning Dew to open.Download this show for it's historical signifigance because the band surely never played anything like this again.

This show is a top 10 for the year but a little overated in my arogant opinion. Get the Feb,May, and Nov shows first, then come back. Besides if the boys pull this one off to pimp it on itunes there'll be a least 60,000 copies of this bad boy out there to get off of others who grabbed it first.

i hear distortion on the left channel {bobby and keith} during TLEOther.....why has no one mentioned this.....also some breakup during da dew can we REVIEW SHOWS AND STOP ALL THE PERSONAL TALK !!!!! damn damn damn

My own opinion of this night well, its beautiful.
It is most likely just me, but i can almost hear where the organ would fit in truckin, my passion has shifted from sports to keys, for the time being. or so i say. lets hope next year i can work both in some way or another ;) keep on truckin always rememebr to be on the look out for new music, new ideas, new adventures, many more places to reach. adonai my friends. Much Peace and Love, truckin has totally just got me there. hahahahaaa

This show is good. If you compare it to other shows the dead has cranked out it doesnt compare. I dont know what to send you to but there is defitly better out there. Just keep searching! You will find the best. Lost a star for over rated.

I have always been a big fan of RFK and this one is no exception. I never knew they even played there that early. I'm learning things about the dead(and other bands)that I thought I knew. RFK was huge and they were playing there when they were only 8 years old!(the dead) I was only 3! May the Music NEVER Stop!

Man, was it hot, but what a great day and a great show. Remember it like it was yesterday.Went with all my Temple buddies...anyone remember?

this show is as over-rated as they come. its a combo Dew first set opener and the novelty of the allman bros on stage with the boys in the third set that makes this a highly regarded show, nothing more. the actual playing is strikingly average--very mellow--very little octane to this show at all. and the sound is pretty weak, too. sugar mag is nice, with bobby adding some energy finally, but donna, of course bellows off a couple crys to ruin any momentum they were to gain from this charge. she is truly awful.

we got there a couple hours early on 6/9 before they opened the gates.we could hear china cat/rider as a soundcheck from outside.we spent most of the weekend about 20 feet from the stage.after the 6/10/73 sets including the closing jam,it was worth the sun poisoning.

Ladies and Gentlemen, The AllGrateful DeadMan Brothers Band !! They were hittin' the note and everything was just exactly perfect. The preceding Dead show was killer too, the bass solo in Dark Star was great. Oh yeah, TLEO induced some sort of spastic fit while I was painting the kitchen. I came out of it to find my wife staring at me with a look that was half amusement and half total fear. God, I love the Grateful Dead. NAMASTE !!

There is alot to digest here! Opening Dew only tells you one thing, its going to be a hot night. TLEO is so jumpy you cant help but get down. I could probably ramble forver. If you cant get into this, you probably aren't into the Dead.

As most of us know, 72' and 73' are some of the deads most productive and best known years, this show is no acception. I have been an avid dead listener for years, and even though I have not have the privilage to bear witness to one of their few thousand! shows, I still know what a good show is. thanks to my parents and their friends, I have acces to many different tapes and recordings. This show was one of my first tapes they gave me, and remains to this day to be my favorite. (it is also one of my favorite darkstar performances ever!)I highly recomend this show to any and all ages

Wow, I've been listening to the Dead for about 5-7 years. With entering the trading community, I have been getting some shows and this is by far my favorite Grateful Dead show I've heard from any period!!! This is a must have for newbie Dead listeners!!!

I went to the show on the 9th where the played befor the A Bros. After dropping acid and running around the hot sun for most of the day, I slept through most of the A Bros. The Dead were OK and except for someone firing off a pepper gas canister in my section of the stadium it was a nice day. At the end of Saturday night we were sitting around watching the crowd leave and at some point someone announced on the PA that if anyone was interested they could come up and get a big garbage bag. If it was returned full you would get a free ticket for Sunday. So thats what we did. It took about 15 minutes to fill a bag and sure enough they handed out tickets.

On sunday the Bros went on before the Dead. At The end of their set, half of the audience left the stadium. So what had been a massive audience was reduced to a nice private party for Dead Heads. Either Bob or Jerry commented on it from the stage and invited everyone to come up closer. As you can see by the two days set lists, Sunday was the killer show.

Yeah, this show is really good and super popular now a days, but have you heard June 22, 1973, that show is amazing(imho). It is such a creative and well done show all the way through .The sound is great and the mix is perfect. I hope you check it out and I hope you enjoy it.

I'm in accord with all reviews here...this is an essential recording. And of all the JGB recordings I've listened to(and the very few and cherished times I saw Jerry do this tune), this It Takes ALot To Laugh, It takes a Train to Cry is the best ever performed, IMHO.

Solid show top to bottom. This is the one that converted a long-time Dead hater friend of mine. I put the third set in, and during 'Mama', she said "You know, I think I DO like the Grateful Dead."

For me, I think a fantastic 'He's Gone' is overlooked by many.

This show has a higher mix of Jerry than most 1973 shows. If you like to dial in on Jerry on the likes of Bird Song, Playin' Eyes, Dark Star or the Allmans set, get this download. Of course this show is a classic!

We know all about the Allmans but the Eyes/Stella is smokin'. The sound is okay but I've heard much better during this time period. This is a good show but not as good as 2/9/73, 5/11/72, 5/8/77 or 12/31/81. I say this b/c I can't figure out why this show is so popular.

I am not a huge dan of 1973, but this one really kicks.... there is not too much in the way of breaks b/t sets and the third set with the Allman Bros is something to write home about. Also, the sound quality is about as good as you get for this time period without the professional assistance from Dick's Picks. Stop reading my babble and download and listen.

I had never heard this show until today and am amazed with the energy all the way through - sound quality 4 show quality 5+

The first 4 songs it took the person mixing to get a grip on levels. The soundman finally gets comfortable and settles in 7 songs later around "They Love Each Other".

The levels are low on this recording. Once downloaded it is a good idea to put it through the wang-dangger (your sound editing program)and raise the soundlevels to max out at 0db. If you are skilled at normalizing you may want to normalize. I only add a smather of normalization because too much diminishes overall instrument dynamics and the quiet breaks.

There is a lot of squeeze and fluctuation in the high end as if someone mastered this using dolby on a non dolby encoded tape.

There has to be a better audience recording out there somewhere.

Killer show from one of the many great Dead periods. Great sound quality, and with a tiny bit of touching up could make a great Dick's Pick.

Since noone elsed touched on it, I'd like to add what a wonderful, upbeat, and enthusiastic version this show holds! Big fan of TLEO, and this one grabs you. short but sweet

Jerry's first two lead braks in That's All Right Mama display sheer dominance...how is Dickey Betts supposed to follow that? Sparse and beautiful licks make for a great Not Fade Away. The Row Jimmy is out there. The only weakness is the Wharf Rat and Truckin' get sloppy.

Okay, I like Kezar 5/26, certainly no slouch. But this show beats it out for my favorite of summer 73. If you were Jerry, and you knew some of your musical peers, the Allmans were listening backstage, what would you do? You'd play your ass off, right?
The first set starts with Morning Dew,the 2nd with Eyes. Need I say more? Okay, the Bird Song,Playin and Dark Star are fantastic- Jerry is in true form.But wait - who's that joining them onstage for the 3rd Set? The Allman Bros.? Here's where the trip gets twisty folks, for at times you can't tell whether it's Jerry jamming with the Allmans, or the Allmans backing up the Dead. Who cares? It's fantastic! Can you say supergroup? A must have for 1973.

EYES on this show is surreal, dreamy. It's like being high on a riverbank when you can't tell if it is 11AM or 5PM because the sunlight is simply everywhere and you're glowing. To go from an antique cassette of this show to a digital download is like being able to conjure up that riverbank anyday of the week.

I was born in DC - a mere 28 hours after this show occurred, so forgive me if I'm a bit biased. I love every second of this show, from the plaintive but crushing Dew opener to the rockin JBG closer. Phil's solos in Dark Star are stellar.

Set III features some tasty Jessica licks from Dicky Betts dueling with Garcia. Unfortunately, neither Duane Allman nor Berry Oakley could be there as they were deceased at the time.

Well, Duane was actually deceased by this point. Who knows how good this third set could have been with him. As it is, this is an essential 73 show. Unique Eyes, superb HCSS, wonderful Star, and then that third set. If I had to bring one show from 73 to a desert island, well, you get the idea.
