Billy talks a lot about Hawaii in his book but has no memory of the four Hawaii '70 shows (they played these two and came back in June). This is
...
one of TC's last shows, and just one set. With 3 openers and the previous night going long, maybe there was a stricter curfew [plus there's a missing reel]. After a sparkless first night, they are comfortable sounding and it's a better show. The next dates were in New Orleans, where the band got busted, down on Bourbon Street. After a launcher of a Cumberland, the set is average until a good Mason's Children. Well, neither the best nor worst of the 19 versions; it still seems like it needs to be worked out. They never get the lyrics straight – which is likely one reason it got dropped. Black Peter is a top moment. It was played the night before, but here Jer's phrasings are particularly impressive, and TC is good. Good Lovin' is another repeat. With lots of push & tug, and Jer's best work in Hawaii, it's too bad it's incomplete; it was going so well! The OFF uses notch filtering to mask some feedback. There's a missing reel here, and we know there's a missing Caution because we have the end of Feedback. This was probably an Alligator>Caution, plus maybe a Dire Wolf or UJB before that. Bid You Goodnight is quite a good version. Dancing in the Street is raggedy, but the jam improves for a couple moments. Overall = B- 3½ stars Highlights: Black Peter – particular Good Lovin' – Jer's Hawaiian best Feedback>And We Bid You Goodnight – trifle maybe but still a great version SOURCES: The SBD has a couple dropouts. Dave's 19 has the whole show [that we have], and adds Feedback & We Bid You Goodnight. Both the SBD & OFF are slightly slow and need +1% pitch correction. Mason's Children is a bonus track on Workingman's, and needs +1% pitch.

All we need is music
http://www.deadlists.com/posters/1970s/19700123.html Great set list Cumberland- (Not too many as 1st set openers) Rain & Snow-(going back to 65) Me
...
& My Uncle- (Bob breaks a string) King Bee- (has that Death Don't vibe but sexy) Mason's-(not a fan, but solid, good vocals/jam) Black Peter-played the previous night as well Note: Jerry stretches this one out a wee bit with a slower tempo. Good Lovin'-well played but does have a cut. Dancin'-very straight forward BELOW FITS WITH MY THEORY ON THE SHORT SET: Articles and ads in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin for 1/22 and 1/24/70 make it clear that there were shows only on the 23rd and 24th, with the opening bands: The Sun And The Moon, September Morn, and Pilfredge Sump, with lights by Noah's Ark. That is a lot of bands for a show that runs from 8pm to Midnight p.s.-The Airplane was definitely NOT on the bill.

Awesome! Not a dark star or other one, yet a very psychedelically played show.

Now I get Mason's Children
This is the first time I've heard a coherent version of MS - I'd written it off since first hearing it many years ago. Most of the songs are played with
...
amazing intensity (Black Peter would get dynamically better with age) - especialy Cumberland Blues. TC's noodling is kind of nice on CB and the feel on the WMD songs is more '69 than '70 alt country.

An Overlooked Gem
A Nice Show (and short download). Show has a nice mellow flow to it. Me and My Uncle is played differently than I've heard it before (just a bit slower)

and I like this version better. You can tell the crowd dug what they heard. Sound quality is awesome given that we're talking 1970. Pigpen does a great King Bee. Pigpen adds that element of coolness that just rounds out a show. Some people say that Jerry and Pigpen are dead, I say they are not- They live on in the music they left behind. Thank you archive, my CD collection grew by about 1000%.
