Cal expo was a lovely helicopter ride from their pads. Dmilks what you don't get is the armpit of cal is the city that personified the Wild West it was

a little event called the Gold Rush of 1849 the single biggest social movement in all of American history. Conditions can become pretty armpit like when come to some foreign town and you and your dogs whole world for 4 days is a filthy blacktop. Nor-Cal is bigger and more valued in commerce and resources than MOST countries. The band was unable to book Peoples park in Berkley or the Haight sorry those out of town'ers blew it.
Average show; started out smokin', both Jerry and Bobby doin' high energy vocals on Jack Straw, Bertha, Desolation Row and Stagger Lee. Mickey and Bill

also very tight for the most part. Second half, definitely in the cruise mode, nothing special. I do remember having to hold my ears during drums when the CalExpo rear speakers were blasting us folks in the rear grandstands with excessive decibels. Was a cool venue, especially when the State Fair was happening in the fall; my buddy missed the days when they allowed camping in the parking lot.

Average at best. Sometimes I think the Dead just didn't hold themselves to a very high standard when playing Expo and Shoreline b/c it became such a staple

for them. Other times they rocked the house, but this doesn't even compare to midwest and east summer 92, specifically Richfield 92 and Albany 92, which I consider to be 4 star 92 dead. The dead had a special connection with Sacramento?? Puh-lease, the place was and is one of the two armpits of California. Don't mean to offend anyone, but come on now. This show is average at best, especially for 92, which had some damn good shows. This ain't one of them. Expo on the other hand was a neat venue, but I don't think the Dead's "cosmic connection" had anything to do with anything other than the venue, not the city.

owe more to the fact these shows were truly General Admission in a tiny venue that capped out around 14,500 people. I hear you asking HowDoYouKnow, right? I know cause I was there for this run and it was magical! Could dance right up to the front and not see an usher till you were right on the fence in front of Jerry - needless to say I may be biased, these 3 are my all time favorite Dead experiences 'ceptin for my 1st show! The Psychic Connection? I would say it was being so close to the Wall Of Love rolling out from the crowd that created the magic more than good ole 'Sactown, but who knows right? Might have simply been the heat....

say I have no idea what the person below is talking about. Absolutely smokin' first set (Brown Eyed Women and Desolation Row are both must-haves) with an incredibly fast, jaunty, but overall laid-back and relaxed pace, leading into a 2nd set that starts off decent with Box of Rain, then kicks out all the jams somewhere around Drums (Mickey and Billy ripped it up, plain and simple). It's almostlike the Dead have some sort of special connection to Sacramento that allows them to give these incredible performances... Or maybe it's just the heat. :-)

The boys never got things rolling. Stagger Lee and PL was a strong finish so you think it would carry over into set 2. Not so. Go to next night for a great

second set. Loved this venue however. revise: having been called Out I must respond. My rational is this...I gave 4 stars to shows like most of the 90 MSG run and 87 Providence. I even acknowledged that the next night's second set merits 4 stars. I was at this gig. Hated it then, hate it now. If the above mentioned shows are 4 star caliber gigs, there is no way this show can be rated the same. My opinion only. Would love others to review.
