40/41: Eyes (11:21) -> Drumz (35:52) -> INAM (12:12) -> Days Between (10:26) -> NFA.
First set is OK. Clocking in at nearly an hour, it's ... among the longer '95 sets. Nice Peggy-O and my highlight is the Lazy River Road and set-closing Cassidy. This second set opener is among the better late-era Here Comes Sunshines. The Victim that follows is a mess. As for Unbroken Chain, always thought it was a curious choice to bring back at this late stage in their history - and while I don't think they ever really got it down - this one, like the HCS, is better than most from the era. A forgettable Eyes segues into a good Drumz, post-Space Miracle and Days Between. Definitely drop in for the Days Between. While it's not their finest, it's spell-binding just the same.

years I loved hearing/watching a band who loved playing, who loved us who were listening and dancing our hearts out, who gave their heart and soul to a whole idea and understanding of all of music and of what it can do to help and heal broken hearts, while it inspires and urges everyone to have a good time while we build a better society than the one we have inherited. Every Dead show gets 5 stars for the love they shared with you.

and it was awful. Saw the guy in the bear outfit. I did most of this tour and had never been to California before but got transferred there for work..
...
So I went to Shoreline. I was aware at the time that this show was really bad. Strangely, my first show was coincidentally objectively the best show of the 63 shows I saw with Jerry. That was 10-16-89 however I think the most fun was maybe some Deer Creek ones. It was a burnt scene at Shoreline and they sounded bad.... I got stuck in SF and didn't get back to Chicago for those shows otherwise I would have been at the last one...

so were already Hornsby fans to begin with. I mean honestly. Who the hell wants to hear a damn accordian at a Dead show? Vince (God Bless his soul) was a hell of a lot better choice than Hornsby and frankly they both sucked. There was little to nothing the band did that was worth listening to after Brent died. As a matter of fact, I hear people bash on later day Dead shows WHO HAVE NEVER HEARD ONE! It's just because they are wanna be puppets nodding their head to the old guard. The old guard earned their opinion. They went through it all. The others, well, whatever...
Having said that, people are way too hard on later day shows. Their loss. Not mine. I'm sure if Jerry knew what a bunch of ingrates he was dealing with while he IS UP THERE DYING he would have quit long ago. 90% of you did not deserve him.
Best on piano was Keith. No question. But as the total package, Brent smoked him. Keith could not sing. And in later days when Jerry had come out of his coma, Brent carried the weight. Man had heart, soul and was the longest lasting man in that chair. There are gems in 94/95. Granted they don't fall out of trees like say in Spring 90, 1977, 1974, 1973, 1972 and so on. For what it is worth Led Zeppelin's performances started to take a dive in their career also. This is not unique to the GD at all. Good shows in 95? 2/21/95. If you have a pulse, the Visions of Johana should most certainly get your attention. Great Black Throated, Lazy River Road and more. If you want to compare a show almost 20 years later to a 70s show your just setting yourself up there.

early on that rating Grateful Dead shows was limiting; every time I think I heard a "best ever" the band would blow me away the next night. I heard a lot worse. It brings back sweet memories and the gift is that almost 17 years later I can hear it again. Thank God for the Grateful Dead. Amen

Compared to the shows I saw in Highgate, Giants Stadium, and RFK, this is pretty damn good for 1995. Jerry's vocals were reasonably strong, and he was

still "noodling" during and between verses- -unlike the summer shows where he was barely strumming chords more often than not. And everything is at a good, lively pace with the rhythm devils doing their thing. And, yes, a damn good lead on Days Between - - which along with So Many Roads proves that the Hunter/Garcia songwriting tandem was formidable to the unfortunate, and way too early, end. Is this a great show musically? Depends on what you are comparing it to. The rest of the dreck that was being played live in 95? It was still the "greatest show on earth". Compared to other Dead shows from before '95? Hell no. But I just sat and listened to all but the drums and space and found it very listenable [drumz/space just became too much//too long after '90 or so - - unless you were at the show and in the right "frame of mind"]. So I guess I'd call it a danceable, listenable, dare I say strong, '95 show. An average '94 show. A weak '93 show. A bad/horrific '88 to '92 show. A shadow of the band I saw more times than I can count between '76 and '87. And less than a shadow of the band I first saw in '74.
All of the above having been rambled.... and for how bad the boyz were at the shows I saw in '95.... and for how painful it was to see Jerry struggling instead of smiling and moving.... There is still nowhere on this earth I'd have rather been than at those shows. And other than my late parents, there's nothing I miss more than hearing Jerry's soulful vocals and crystal clear guitar.
No rating because I wasn't at the show. But consider where Jerry's health was at, not that bad at all. In fact, a couple very fine moments. Including that sweet Brokedown encore.
R.I.P. Jerry. We loved you more than words can tell....

Loved the entire first set.
As for the second set, I loved the Days Between and Brokedown Palace, especially. and it was pretty sweet to see Unbroken ... Chain for once.
This is a must have show for me because it was my last show. And since this is the only SB, I'm giving it 5 stars.
(As for the completely off topic comments below about Hornsby--they don't belong here. He didn't even play this show, but if he had played, I certainly wouldn't complain about him. Hornsby is about as good pianist as they come.)

I hear ya'll on the 95 not-so-goodness. The rhythm section is really holding things down and it's still fun to check out these many years later.
One ... thing I've noticed here is that Vince (in the right ear) seems to be detuned by a few cents, which I find annoying. Or maybe someone else is slightly out of tune. I think it's Jer actually now that I listen more ...
Aside from that, not a terrible show.

come on people, jerry was on his death bed. sound quality ... is pretty good. and this weekend was great. gives me chills thinking about it. of course, the purple pyramids helped :)

Yes ... it was! You saw them from '89-'95. What do you know about the mid 80's? I saw them since '78 and '85 was the best year of all from '78-->'95. Cryptical brakeout (and others) during '85 was insane. St. Stephen in 'fall of '83 was great too. You certainly can't just say the mid 80's were bad, because Jerry showed up more often than not than. By the time you were on the band wagon he was on the downside (not that '89-'92 didn't have it's moments-especially with Hornsby). So don't tell us what we saw was bad when you weren't even there.

it seems like the band came back too soon into the final verse of days between, and kinda either pissed Jerry off or lost him in the transition. However
...
it happened he did not sing the last verse of the song. Of course his ballad voice sounding lonesome and sad. It still brings a tear to the eye. the sound as all SBD 95(sans deer creek) is superb.

love the Dead for what they were at the time. Even though this may not be a early 70's ripper it still sheds love and light on us all. The wonderful thing about it is they were still playing in 95 and were doing it because they knew how much it meant to their fans. RIP Jerry 1942-Forever. Toodeloo.

of us did'nt make it. This was the life we chose and though I feel sad, I know, you know....we rocked it on down. We took it passed the limit. I'm super proud to be a "DeadHead". My 1st show was Alpine 1984. My life changed forever. I always felt different and when I saw my first show..I felt like i belonged. As for the show itself, I remember my brother saying, "you got your Unbroken Chain". I was happy. If you're a music critic, you probably think this show sucks. I'm not...like i say,"if you were inside, it was great!" When spring tour 1989 ended in Minnesota, i remember security screaming over their megaphones..."Dead Heads go home, tour's over." That was funny.

Is Vince's high pitched screaming and worse than Donna's screeching?
I enjoyed these shows (my last) and saw as many as I could because it was clear the road was coming to an end. My tour life was '89-95 so I was relatively late to the game. As such I tried to make it up in quantity. Towards the end rarely was everyone on. That was to be expected so instead you went for the moments when things clicked. Sometimes you were lucky and sometimes not so much.
This run exemplified that - does it compare to 71/72? Of course not, but that isn't a fair comparison.
The good news is that there is a body of work that is available which allows us all to reminisce and recall the great times that were had. Sure it wasn't all great and the scene got worse and worse, but I would take a mediocre/bad Dead show over most any other band on a great night - back then and today.

My wife and I caught this 3 night run at the Shoreline and spent all the nights in the taping section. My audience masters are still sitting on a shelf
...
collecting dust and I can'tbring myself to revisit the shows. These were the most painful shows I ever witnessed. Jerry was completely lost. After this night's performance, I swore to myself that I would not attend another Dead gig until Jerry cleaned up his act. After following the Dead for 21 years, this show was a pretty scary way to end the ride.

i woke up that morning in baltimore, MD....
flew to SF.... took a bus 2 miles.... hitchhiked 2 miles to a BART station.... ... took the train to Mtn View.... and walked 2 miles to shoreline.... got to the lot at 6PM where my tour family had me a ticket, a new glass and a nice sak....
i would never forgive myself if i didn't up my flight to 6AM from 11AM.....
i needed him to end my time with the Dead with a near perfect (for the time) Days Between......
we miss you jerry and your legacy lives in US.....
give thanks ~~ heartlove ~~ in lak'ech......
(suggest a better "Days" if you can....)

When I did this Shoreline, my only Shoreline shows, I loved all three shows, but thought this was the weakest, the first night being the best.
Still worth ... having, especially if you were there. I notice now the Drums is listed as 30 minutes. Is that near a record? Was Mickey thinking, "what the hell is Jerry doing?"

Drove out from Colorado...thunderstorms in Nevada. Camped out at half moon bay in the VW. Good times at the show...we really had a blast there in CA
...
right after I graduated from high school. I remember we were a ways back on the lawn but jerry's guitar was shining in the late afternoon sun all silvery...and then the beachballs and the parking lot before the show. Actually this concert sounds great to me!

in the spirit of keeping the music alive. I felt it. The tapes do not reflect this. I remember standing with my buddy Ron, grooving. I'll remember it fondly all of my days.

was even more painful to see than Deer Creek. Please don't bother with this unless you are ready to hear a great artist and band in decline. How sad that this was the last Bay Area show. However, to be fair, Days Between is a poignant version that does have a particularly soulful vocal from Jerry, as does the Brokedown encore.

This show is notabale due to the fact it was the last Bay Area Grateful Dead show. Unfortunately it is far from notable musically as the band are all over

However, set two is a shambles for the most part, with Victim being the worst example - just listen to it - there is a whole verse where everyone is playing completely different parts and it sounds embarrasingly bad. Phil even stops playing for a moment while they figure out where they are going to pick up from. Dear old Jerry, despite playing pretty well in the first set, goes from bad to worse in the second, and it is just troubling to listen to such an enlightened musician in such a bad state of being.

Poor Jerry! He was dying onn stage before our very eyes. His playing at this show was so poor that I can't listen to it without wincing. By '93 I was

bringing as many new people to shows as I could so they could see Jerry before he left us. There were still glimpses of genius to see now and again, but it became more and more rare. By '95 there wasn't much left to see... even the rest of the boys sound REALLY bored and the playing is sloppy. May Jerry rest in peace.
