Unimpressed and a little sad
This was my last show after starting out just pre Touch of Grey and was my first post Brent’s death other than JGB. I remember being distinctly unimpressed. It was relatively lifeless - not much jamming and Vince was grating. I left nostalgic for great shows I’d seen like the 88 Oxford Speedway run and some of the Spring Tour 90 shows. So much magic over the years but these later shows I find hard to enjoy other than some rare moments. On the other hand the last two songs of Soldier’s Field — the last show ever —- show what miracles can arise.

last show up close
Our buddy always managed to get some up front tix by sending a cute picture of his daughter in tie die to San Rafael. 7th row in front of Phil, great time. What I remember most was entering another dimension during Foolish Heart, not the tune you'd expect to transport you. When it was over my friend and I looked at each other with one of those WOW what just happened.

My only show
I had just turned 9 years old when my dad took me to see this show. Really cool to look back on, because there's nothing like this anymore, and I sincerely doubt many people my age have had a chance to see The Grateful Dead. I was looking forward to October 95, hoping they'd play the Garden again, so I could go with my dad again, but as everybody knows, Jerry passed away the summer after this show. My only qualm is that I wish I were born earlier, because being only 9 at the time, 1994 is a distant memory.

Yeah, a very overlooked show
I remember this whole Fall '94 run at MSG as being a lot of fun, and consistently good. The two shows that stood out in my mind at the time were 10/14 and 10/17, and they've stayed with me the most. However, I downloaded this show-- which I literally hadn't heard since the very night that I was there, and I gotta say that it sounds really damn good all the way through. What a hell of a first set-- with both Dupree's and Loose Lucy, etc. (My most distinct memory of this show-- since they all blur together-- is the whole audience singing along very enthusiastically to the "Thank you/for a real good time" refrain in Loose Lucy). Anyway, this show has some damn impassioned Garcia singing-- especially the very end of Foolish Heart. I guess the opening night of this run got overlooked, but a friend who reviewed the first night of the Winterland run in '74 for Deadbase once pointed out that the Dead were always coolest on opening night because it was always the weirdest, least self-conscious show of any stand; the band would take more chances, which would yield a more fun and unique show. Listening to this download, I have to agree that 10/13 gets unfortunately eclipsed by 10/14, in the same way that 3/28/94 gets overlooked next to 3/30/94, or 5/9/77 gets overlooked in favor of 5/8/77. But shoot, this show is really fun. What a great first set. Garcia was in better form in Fall '94 than summer, that's for sure.

Twilight
Not a bad show at all. Hardly earth-shaking but Jerry is playing very sweetly and the band is present. But I have a question. How could Vince effectively sabotage The Other One so thoroughly and yet play so well on Wharf Rat? This Other One stood a chance of being a good one but between the wash of Vince synth (was Cutler out of his mind? Listen to this crap!)and whatever the hell MIDI nightmare Bobby was having this Other One is toast. The audience tape recorded from the Men's Room is probably better than this.
Someone should have taken Bobby's MIDI toys away around 1991 and said---there is no future in this crap. Americana is going to bury you and you largely created it. Do you maybe wanna re-think your approach?
But I agree. This is a nice show. I actually think Jerry's playing better than he did on the 14th. I htink he was just ballsier on the 14th. That Scarlet>Fire is a good time but play it against 02/20/91 and hear the difference in what he can make his fingers do. I think his dexterity is a little cleaner on this night. Maybe he jut got tired more quickly.

not bad for 94'
best first set of the run. second set is pretty good too. Great jamming in "playin in the John" and a wonderful "Baby Blue". And a little secret...10/14/94 is so over rated. Yeah, great Scarlet > Fire...but come on folks, was it really THAT great??? Answer: No.

Four and a Half Stars
The first set has Garcia in rare form, nailing every one of his tunes with Loser and Duprees shining best. The Let it Grow is also a corker.
Set 2 brings a great Foolish Heart into playin->UJB. Which I must say was no where near as good as the 10/5/94 combo, still a solid version but 10/5 has some pretty tasty jamming post UJB.
The other1>wharf rat is where the show just keeps going at a nice steady pace, building up to a climax with the best JBG of the year and probably a few years b4. The Baby Blue is the icing on the cake, perfect in many ways, but from strike another match... to the amazing acapella It's all over now....Baby Blue, I knew I had just witnessed a very kind, one for the ages, Baby Blue.

nice show
Overshadowed by the rest of the run(especially the monster Scarlet->Fire on 10.14), this show has some nice moments, including a Duprees. From start to finish, this one is better than 10.14 imo.
Baby Blue has Jerry in great vocal form as well.
