Subject: Wow what a show!
Subject: Wow what a show!
I see 9/3/88 gets all the initial run of the four but the opener was indeed the best of the bunch!
Only 7/6/90 Louisville exceeds!

This show is on the Mt. Rushmore for me with 8/27/72, 8/13/75, 5/22/77 and 8/6/74. Fall '88 is very nice overall but juxtapose this with a hot 10/2/88 and you can hear the extra oomph in 8/27/88. Listen to the Sella's from both and you can hear how the Cap Center one is far more on point. This show has my go to Wheel, Watchtower, Scarlet/Fire, Sugar Mag and Stella....hence, Rushmore.

It is mesmorizing to observe the audacity and ignorance of people that criticize music. Perhaps you should go and write some songs of your own if you think you have such a deep understanding of music composition eh' Garcia and Co are playing their hearts out at this show and doing an excellent job night after night, the best band on the planet. 5 Stars

Typical for the time period, of special note is the end, Watchtower is full of strange Weir-d Bobby MIDI stuff, a lot to take in, but then Jerry just slays the Stella and SM brings the house down

I have been going through 88 show by show. This is a real stand out. Saw a bunch of 88 shows but missed this one. The Cap Center was not the best place to have a great show, so I think our memories kinda downplay the quality of Landover performances. This Althea is one of the best. Garcia's guitar leads are spectacular here. Let it Grow is fantastic. Scarlet Fire is exceptional as well, really cool Weir work there. Really nice Space>Wheel.
Decent Video available on Youtube posted by Kevin Tobin.
If you are not familiar with 9-12-87, this show has one of the best Dew and Losers you will ever hear, and another great Landover Miller matrix.

I attended all 4 shows during this run..all pretty average..Camped out in the back lot..those were the daze!! It was still really hot and there were ponds all around the Capital Centre lot..so one day I decided to take a dip to cool off..as I'm all by myself, swimming around and spitting water out of my mouth..I hear someone yelling for me to get out..it is a security and he is yelling " Hey..get out of there!! That is a sewage treatment pond!!!! " Live and learn..Hey it cooled me off..LOL!! Forever Grateful>Forever Dead

Was at this show - pretty decent venue (at least compared to the stadium shows of '86 and '87).
The show was good. Not great, but solid.
Not sure what happened after Jerry's coma. Obviously, it was good to see him in better health and not zoning out with his chin down.
At the same time - and I understnad and respect those of you who would disagree - it seems that the shows changed. Less exploratory (I know there are exceptions in 1990 and Fall of '89).
I mean obviously the boys were tentative in 12/86 and the '87 runs. But the band seemed to be a replica of itself in some ways.
I know Road Trips is re-examining Hampton '87 (or '88). But you notice that '81, '82,'83, and '85 were the only years DP's found shows worth releasing out of the first 25 choices?
The shows I would reexamine would be 6/30/87 - 7/8/87. These shows from the summer before are nuggets that I hope many of you check out.
I know this gets of track from this show - but I could not find another place to post this. Guess I will go to 6/30/87 and do the same.
Spacey jam before Scarlet had us all wondering.
Beyond that - good show. But if you look at the rest of the fall tour it's all pretty much the same. Too many shows?? I know that sounds negative but

Subject: Phall Tour
Subject: Phall Tour
Overall: good show. Picks up almost where they left off quality-wise from summer tour (the last shows: Maine, Greek, Laguna were very strong shows). Everyone seems to have the energy and chops. Quality of play is really high, but jams are still too short (typical 88).
The scene: Beginning of the fall tour. We came down from Roch in the bus - me, Larry, Peter, and some others? At these shows I bought my first drum, and quickly was at any and every drum circle I could find from then on. In fact, High Times did an article on the Dead scene and included a picture of a drum circle from these shows that included me. The hallways in Landover were spacious and always fun. But they only had speakers at certain locations and the venue had these curtains that blocked the sound from coming out into the hallways, so the sound was bad if you weren't by the speakers. During the second set I kept opening the curtain, much to the annoyance of the security (I know, an immature act, but it was fun and people were cheering every time we opened the curtain). I actually wound up getting kicked out of the show during Black Muddy River (luckily). Imagine if I'd done that the next night???? And missed Ripple???? Man, that close call taught me to never do anything like that again!
The music: Bucket and TLEO are fine, but the slide solo in Minglewood is the first real spark on this evening. Great playing on the Let it Grow. Scarlet is unique with some really interesting play between Phil, Jerry, and Brent. But it is short. Nice peak to Fire. Healey does some funky sound effects during the jam of LLR. Interesting and very good Watchtower with Bobby using MIDI at times (still a new feature at this period in time). A fine soaring Stella that peaks with Jerry and Brent intertwining up in the stratosphere. Sugar Mags is pretty strong as well.

1st Set: Who organized this tour that sent the band to the farthest reaches of the northwestern United States for only two shows then scheduled 14 shows in 21 days in three of the most DEadmanding of towns...we're looking at exhaustion sometime down September's road. Anyways, there's two minutes of increasingly tense and exciting dark tones in the "Tuning" that makes us all anticipatory of going to "Hell." And that we are. They're not unified. but it's a wildly contained version. Brent's got some new cutesy synth sounds during a pokey "TLEO." A messy "Minglewood" follows. It appears as if the boys are getting their bearings - not in unison, there are plenty of spaces between songs and Bobby/Jerry forgetting lyrics. At least "Dire" is consistent though its peppiness is appreciated. So far, "Queen Jane" is the most convincingly astute performance of the evening so far; that being said, it's not great. "Althea" is sub-standard, though messy it improves slightly as the song concludes. What an excellent selection "Let" is as the song thrives on disorganized chaos. Not blistering or all that important, but they would have fumbled on a straight-ahead rocker like 'Deal.' "We'll be back in a little bit."
2nd Set: 81 seconds of more spacey tuning leads to miss "Begonias." It's only fair because of the lack of full pronounciation and mellow rhythms. "Fire" is more their style tonight...a chill beat they eagerly fill. Not brilliance because it's all so messy...like throwing out a slew of notes and hoping for most of them hit their intended targets. Thankfully, there's no pause before a surprise turn south to "LLR." Bobby's guitar is carelessly clanging lessening my belief in him feeling those doldrums. However, it's an accessible moment for the group inside the Centre to unify and clap together with the band. It sails into a croaky "Terrapin" that manages minor-league power. "Drums" passes into "Space" which after a few minutes of the usual nonsense stresses comforting tones leading to the comforting humane wisdom of "The Wheel." It's serves as a grounding tool before the discordance knwon as "Watchtower." Brent's synths sound like nails on a chalkboard. Wow, Jerry hits some amazing notes late on an otherwise standard "Stella." When Brent joins him in for the fun at 7:50 my head was arching back like a horse stirred to frenzy. naaaaay... :) "Sugar"'s hardened galloping isn't pretty, but does its climactic job.
A delicate, minimalist "Black" ends the show quite poigantly.
2 4/5th stars and I'm feeling like I'm beginning to repeat myself.

I mean really, I'd rather be in a desert with Osama bin laden than to make outrageous claims on the live archive, but is it just me that think the fall tour of 1988 was one of the best EVER. I'm not going to review shows, I'll simply review the tour and say this.Download the entire tour if you can find the sound quality to match to your liking, especially for 1988 fans. The sound quality for this show is around a 4 i'd say. Powerful, powerful.Drums and Bass work up cresendo's here. The accents coming through my speakers have a solid snap.
