One of my first tapes
Anyone who doesn't think this show is a STANDOUT does not really get it. This is a classic performance in a half empty Rhode Island Arena (an hour south
...
of Boston) in what was arguably the Dead's BEST YEAR. Pigpen is at his best and that spurs on Jerry to new heights of incredible! Just crank this one up to 11 and let it rip. I hope YOU get it. And to anyone who went to this show: YOU LUCKY DOG! Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad; ain't gonna be treated this way!

as an usher. I was one of those dudes in the long, red cardigan sweaters that smelled like cigars. One week before I turned 18 I ushered at this show; right in front of the stage, on Pig Pen’s side. I wondered “who the hell are these guys and where did they come from? This music is incredible!” I ended up chasing them all the way through college (URI), then later after starting a career, and now, I go to Folsom Field every year to see “& Co” with a friend who I met in college. I am blessed to be able to access this show after all these years. It made me a convert and was one of my top 5 of all time, especially since it was the only one I saw with Pig Pen. The only thing flying higher than all those pigeons inside this venue were the people themselves.

One smack in the middle of the 1st set. Dig Pig's organ work it is just in the back of my head. The WHARF RAT is way out there Jerry makes up some lyrics His vocal phrasing is intense Hard to Handle- this is some of the coming Europe 72 greatness. Man if you get the GD, This is the x-factor When they ignite on a standard blues tune. Pig raises it up to another level after they just melted down. What a killer jam. SERIOUSLY! ----(pig-thank you) Cumberland-They got too mellow with this tune in 70 with a few notable exceptions but with Billy quick timing this is moving a much better clip. Notice how both Phil and Jerry are flying thru this. I think PIG is singing on this? I am not 100% sure but I love the Cumberland. Big jam mid tune just before Weir comes in with "A lot of poor men make a 5 dollar bill." always dug Bob's lyrics right there Good ensemble singing Then Garcia's lead vocal Pretty sure that is PIG singing! Very Tight CUMBERLAND. Oh My, A Bird Song, Wow They don't jam it like they did in the 80's and 90's but the pace is so laid back that it runs a full 8 minutes. Set closes with a Me & Bobby. Talk about going out on a mellow tune. I don't understand for the life of me why they stopped playing this tune? weir-a little break garcia-short break RHODE ISLAND is a small state I bet a few folks still remember this 1st set Maybe it would be best to consider the entire Second Set as a ginormous encore * * * Set two- 1) Phil drives the Bertha 2) Bobby croons Sugar Mag 3)Pig sets up shop for Good Lovin Ron goes BLUE 4)NFA>GDTRFB>NFA 5)Uncle John's Band 6) Johnny B Goode

Very good show but not a stand out.
1st Set: Starts off with a real nice CASEY JONES. They are tight and the songs are big. They are focused. I wouldn’t call it special though but it

is definitely worth the listen. I was listening while working out and kept forgetting to listen which means they weren’t bringing the real goods but what they got is great. LOSER is always great. The TRUCKIN is large and has some real musicality in the end jam that just devolves into DRUMS. Billy, of course, has been on fire and I’ve really been enjoying his wild-man antics. The segue into TOO is beautiful and they launch into a tight Other One that you can almost feel it breathing on its own. This one is like a crocodile slithering down a river looking for something to eat with a sure knowing he’ll find something. They go up, they go down and then WHARFRAT just kind of . . . happens. They are really getting this one down. The first part of the song, the story, is soulful but the last part is sheer majesty. 2nd Set: This is a very good set with all songs being played well. If I had attended this concert, I would have left very happy but I can’t say that anything really stands out in the second set. It is notable, though for the GOOD LOVIN -> NFA ->GDTRFB. That’s pretty cool and of course, Good Loving was fantastic as they all have been this year. UJB is sweet and they rev it up to send folks away with a nice, but normal, JBG.

Pure '71
This is '71 at it's best. A rewarding listen. The band is on and the recording is tight. Not epic just real good. Check out Jerry's vocals. Tasty.
Had this show on cassette from a place called Prime Cuts on L.I. but it was not complete ,after Me& Bobby McGee it ended. It was a great show anyway

but now that I have the entire concert it's even better. As always the will forever bring a smile to my face.

Boo hiss?
I've been streaming this show(simultaneously downloading)and I just don't hear any hiss, and assuming there is some, my old ears aren't picking it up.
...
As far as the show goes, I'm a soft touch when it comes to '71, but this is yet another(so far)excellent performance, with great sound! This era has such an intimate feel to it, something that was lost as time marched on and the venue's got bigger, etc. Turn the bright lights way down low, pretend it's 1971, and...ah, I can almost see my old Magnavox now.

has less hiss than most of the commercially produced live albums back in the day. Get a fricking grip jev; these are historic recordings. April 71 is one of the best moments in Dead history and this IS THE HTH. That being said we are a bunch of nit-pickers. Remember the "just another picky deadhead" bumper sticker..quack!
