I went to Allegheny College
Man, this is so cool. I've been into the dead for ~6 years. I actually got into them right after graduating college in 2013. Allegheny College, that is. Years later, on this day in 2019, I've just stumbled upon this show from them, playing in the very gym I used to play basketball in. I wasn't into the dead in college, so I never got to peep around, but I'm curious if there are any remnants (photographs, stories from faculty) of the show in 1971. Great quality recording too. Thanks so much for your stories too - imagining them happening on campus is cracking me up. Solid show too.

It was the Center of the Universe that night!!
I was a 14 year old long haired hippie boy.
I lived two blocks from the college and spent the day hanging out watching the crew set up the tie dye covered "wall of sound" in this small gym. New Riders played first. Jerry played all sets of both bands! During the last set of the Dead a security cop grabbed my shoulder as I was passing a joint to a stranger. My friend Phil yelled "Leave him alone Pig!" Distracting him enough for me to break loose and out the door. I missed the last several songs. It was a great time!

Nice all-around
Great songs in this line-up. Classic Sugar Magnolia equipment failure. I guess everything wasn't "just exactly perfect" before they started. The El Paso in this line-up is very slow and enjoyable. Great SBD quality.

The down side of '71
Not at the level of other shows from around this time. Try 4/21 or 14. The sound of the recording seems veiled. Pig to the rescue.

my first show
This show was awesome. I split a little white pill in half then mistakenly slurped up both halves. I sat 10 feet in front of Jerry. The show was so intense that I never moved and had no feeling on the side of my left foot for 5 years.

I was there.
I remember it well. I was a senior in HS. Only heard a couple of Dead albums before that.
The one and only time I got to see Pigpen. They were still a five piece band then(Mickey Hart had left the band at that time}.
The New Riders of The Purple Sage opened the show
W/ Jerry Garcia on Pedal Steel.
The only bad part was some guy named Allen kept throwing oranges at me.

Flying Oranges
This show was a blast and is captured beautifully here. A very intimate setting, and a crowd that was primed and gliding with the scene. I was there (as Lou Sleaves) with a group of friends, some from Virginia - Buckeyes, Dick (AKA Bones), Helmet Head, meableffutS, Cliff, Kiff, Madman, Carl. We brought a shopping bag full of oranges and threw them around in the crowd in that small, old gym. The Dead were very friendly and had a running conversation wih the crowd, not separated from them by more than a few feet. The atmosphere was bright, upbeat, trippy.

Nice '71 find
I've always had a soft spot in my heart for '71 Dead shows. Where did this show come from? I wasn't aware of it's existance until I stumbled across it here. What a nice surprise to find such a great sounding show and one that I've never heard before. Quality is excellent and the boys are smoking.

Holy shit!
Where did this little nugget come from? It's not really listed in Deadbase or the Compendium, and I streamed it just because I'm trying to turn on a buddy who lived near there, and I'm blown away. Every tune is played beautifully, and Garcia just flat out shreds on a number of songs. the Bertha and Deal both feature those loud sharp solos that sound like he's holding a downed power line in his teeth. Puts the electric in electric guitar for sure. I for one am always a fan of obscure shows. This one is sweet. If you like 71 you should download it. It'll put a smile on your face.

How many times can one say "wow" during playback? That's the question you'll be asking yourself. From the first song on this show doesn't disappoint. Great stuff to be sure. Everyone is in great form. Fantastic 1971 show. I'm very surprised I've never heard others mention this show.
