One man's poison another's paradise. Bored and tired? The Shakedown St opener is great. Jerry pratically yelling '"just gotta poke around". Nice jam. The
...
crowd sounds energized. Jerry and Brent are on. Bobby sounds good along with Phil and the drummers. Nice Peggy O, Me and My Uncle - Mexicali both upbeat w nice solos. I like Dupree's this is a good one.
Set 2 Nice jam with Bobby and Brent at the end of He's Gone. Other One is above average.
Niagra the next stop is another good 84 show. Actually all of the spring shows in April are grate..

I was a clean cut college kid hoping to be part of what was described by my peers as a transcendental experience -- talk about disappointing. I was bored
...
stiff. The whole event seemed very tired to me, and upon hearing this tape 36 years after the fact my opinion remains unchanged. Pretty mediocre night.

Subject: My Brother's first show
What is not to like abourt this show? This was my brother's intro to the Grateful Dead and I can honestly say that it changed his life. While I only
...
attended East Coast shows during the 80's, I have listened to shows from all over and all decades and this is one of my favorites. The band is really tight and the Shakedown Street opening the first set is one of the best that I have heard. Hell...I do not think there is a weak song in both sets. The jam leading into The Other One will blow your mind...if the show has any faults it might be the "Might as Well" to end the first set (might as well end the set since we don't have anything interesting to play) and "Day Job" for the second set (one of my least favorite Dead songs)

All this blah...blah...blah about this not being as good as that, and pseudo-deadhead disection of everything from one particular song, to woulda-shoulda-coulda
...
about what Jerry should have done, the nuiances of the tapes, is really boring me. Doesn't anyone feel Gradeful that the Dead were what they were, and that we are all lucky enough to have access to all this fantastic music for FREE? I sure am. I'd rather hear a "hissing", "muddled" or "flat" Dead show than any other music I can think of! Quit whinning and trying to prove how "cool" you are and BE FREAKING GRATEFUL!!!!
Enjoy the bus!

If you like it, it's "good". On the other hand, if your purpose is to pick it apart and re-assemble it so it looks like a thing you imagine it to be or
...
want it to be, it may have become something else entirely. Perception being what it is.
I happen to like the particular nuances and headrooms of the various shows but, now that my 3 1/2 star career in the cannibalistic business of Rock and Roll is over, I suppose that I am rather easily amused and entertained.
There sure ain't no shortage of R. Christgau-esque sentiment around here...Pick, pick, pick. Let's "quantify" the performance by assigning it a "value" rather than enjoy it, etc., etc..
Just to bump this turkey's "value" up a bit, I'm assigning it five imaginarily "valuable" icons. May God have mercy on my imaginary soul.

I see a few mentions of this being a very good shakedown. Let me dispell the rumors. The last really really really great shakedown had been 12/5/81. There
...
were a few decent 82s and 83s...and ever one or two that could be called great, until you hear this one. Absolutely fantastic shakedown. Unique, tight and loose, and torn to shreads...and then they drop into the last vocals section, which is when this goes from a great version to a top 20 version. This ranks at the top of the list. The show is very good, but I understand some people not digging these years a whole lot...fine, don't listen to the show, listen to the shakedown. IMMEDIATELY!
Sound:6/10

space>other1 is really nice from this show :)
let me expand on this :)
at the end of drums mickey and billy set up a nice offbeat and bobby picks ... up on it. jerry comes in to compliment, and a very sweet jam follows this. after about 5 minutes of this bliss, a minute or two of re-org jam, a few quiet moments of otherone tease, and then the machine starts to roll. gaining speed, some pauses, as the avalanche gains speed alternately threatening stop. finally there can be no doubt, the avalanche is not stopping, iTS COMING STRAIGHT FOR US! (tune in next week to see what happens) or just listen to it lol :)

While this might not be your idea of a five-star show, for 1984, this is a true jaw-dropper. Do not let the audience source worry you, it's an excellent
...
source (albeit a little bit more low-end response would be nice).
Highlights:
-----------
Me & My Uncle > Mexicali Blues -- Okay, you might be saying, these are standard Bobby tunes, what could be so great? Well, both of these are perfectly executed at a nice, fast tempo with especially tasteful Jerry mini-solos in Mexicali.
He's Gone -- Practically transcendent. Very laid back and groovy. I think this one clocks in at around 15 minutes.
Space > The Other One -- WOW! The previous reviewer's comments are dead-on here.
Stella Blue -- What else could be said about this song that hasn't already. This one fits nicely against all the other SB's.

While in the Air Force, I was stationed for a time at RAF Lakenheath in England. My friend Paul, who was also an airman there, managed to score my roomate
...
Brent and I some tickets for the '84 Spring Tour. After the Hampton Shows, I dropped Brent off in New Haven and drove to the Albany bus station to pick up Paul on our way to Rochester and Niagra Falls. Paul had met this guy on the bus named Jeff who didn't have tickets to the shows, but did have a backpack full of mushrooms. Well, lets just say a few minuites of good 'ol fashioned horse-trading resulted in a mutually beneficial arrangement for all. My memories of the Rochester show itself are less clear. I DO however remember a smoking He's Gone > Drums > Space > Other One (check out the weird drum cadence on the drums to space segue!). Glad to see some cells survived...Aiko-Aiko!
