Mydland's Rooster Solo
Transcending. That mofo could draw you a mental picture of emotion better than anyone that I have ever heard. Period, and the way him and Billy interact at the transitions of his solo. Badass.

China Doll
Maybe the phrase "favorite should be used" instead of best. From a musicians standpoint, this Doll is my fav of all. The lead Jerry pulls off shows he still had some spark! Rest of the show is OK. 4 stars for the CD and also check out RFTG's version. Sweet female vocals really adds to the GD gem!

This run is nothing if not consistent
NYC and MSG...put them together, and was this the longest run of shows in one venue since the acoustic in '80?
1st Set: The sound levels keep fluctuating thankfully not interrupting my enjoyment of this groove "Touch." Brent's determined irascible boards elevate the life of this otherwise standard "Rooster." Hmmm..Jerry's riffing through 'Tennessee,' but we veer instead into a fine but forgettable "Dire." I wish this song would get "Far From Me." On the bright side, Brent sounds really youthfully fresh tonight, it's as if he's still got his long hair from the early 80's. Dylan time? You bet, with a lovely "Queen Jane." There's our "Tennessee," slow at first but the strong vocalizations, a bit of a sing-along, and a rugged jam in the 7's make this version erupt. "Let" is plagued by the same ehhh malaise during the song, but the jammies is respectfully thought out.
2nd Set: They're brewing some mighty malelovent tones...who's the "Victim" tonight? Pokey, though Jerry's sneering instrument is frightening...toying with his prey. A strainingly long but pleasant "Foolish" continues the set, But listen to the one earlier in the run before this... Time for a little "Playin" Mini speculations, nothing too dramatic before the first "China" in a long while. Me dig the harpsichord, not so much the rough distorted Jerry solo as I prefer my 'China's' to be delicate, not rough. It's a fine reading and we're back to a short but nicely planned "Playin Reprise." "Drums/Space" are both bursting with microcosmic life. Did I use the word celestial recently because Brent's synths create a universe full of wonderment. "The Wheel" is not as much a rocker than a journey through plush surroundings. "Black Peter" is a competent run-through of an always appreciable archaic ditty. Both "Around" and "Good Lovin" are high-bursts of good-time energy, especially the riotious later..."You've got to push back the night, your love is the only thing that makes things go right, so push back the night." Nice, Bobby.
A well-plucked "Quinn" sends the crowd home with enough smiles to last them til tomorrow night.

perfect sound quality, nice balance, although jerry could be turned up a just a hair...I love all of these 87 and 88 MSG shows, they are all good and many of them sound perfect. no different here. garcia's lead playing is energetic and smooth. the far from me is nice, I enjoy that tune, jerry rips it.

Indeed, this show was hot...I was lucky enough to be there...as were so many from MSG. I sometimes forget how good Brent was, and then you get the Far From Me here...and it just goes up side your head! So good...and his piano work in Foolish Heart.
Jerry's voice is a little rough, but he gets an "A" for effort in my mind. Peter, Foolish, Touch...and yes, China Doll are all excellent. However, best CD ever? Hardly, IMHO. The first ever comes to mind (2/9/73) as a far superior rendition. But for the later years this was hot.
Sound quality is excellent.
