Subject: Kinda of a hot mess
Subject: Kinda of a hot mess
I think we all love a hot mess now and then, don't we fellas? I hope that doesn't sound sexist. Anyways this is a kind of a hot mess. Let me first express
...
gratitude for those who clobber together soundboards with audience recording so that we can listen to the entire performance. I appreciate it beyond words so that has to be said from the start. This is definitely clobbered together between a boomy large room audience and some soundboard. I found the first part of the performance mostly unmemorable enjoyable but nothing to review further than has already been done. Towards the end of the show we get a switch back to the audience from the soundboard and we seem to have some guest keyboard player during the new speedway which was thoroughly enjoyable and I look forward to the point when Keith shows up, of course not wanting pig to go but so be it. It's not that listenable at times but for those that are completest like me it's fine. Then we get into a very difficult to listen to lovelight due to the quality. But then blamo We get the start of easy wind and then it cuts into the most incredible sounding soundboard. It's slowly trickles in from just only Phil to the whole band and it's effing incredible. But this portion of the tape is very confusing. The show ended with love light I'm not sure what this little snippet is. It's definitely not what I was hoping for which would be easy wind followed by Uncle John's band back into easy wind but it's not. It's just confusing where this came from because they had already played Uncle John's band. This just doesn't belong here. Perhaps it's from an earlier set that was also played in Hawaii the same day? I don't know I don't think even then they would have repeated easy wind and Uncle John's like this. It's a mystery and a puzzlement what's going on here but something's off because I'm pretty sure the show ended with lovelight. The deadhead taping compendium volume 1 says the show ended with love light. The easy wind Uncle John's happened but in the middle of the set which is where we would expect it. So somebody tacked on this here with a double version of easy wind. That's why I'm calling this recording a hot mess..

50 years ago. On NSB, the last break with Pig and Jer jamming is pure sweetness. Shines right thru the muddy aud.
Tho not perfect listening, this is a ... must listen show.

This is my era of the GD - first saw them in 1970 - and I can't help but favor it. Great to hear Pig. The recording equipment must have been primitive,

since it was the Stone Age.

It's a laugh that below "Little Nemo"says "to check the notes" instead of listening to the show when he criticizes another reviwer . He was wrong. This
...
is a patched together source of an epic, yet poorly recorded show. If a vault SBD surfaces this would be considered on of the greats from that great year!
The Dead played magical shows is Hawaii!
This was a vacation. They weren't playing Hawaii as a tour. They had friends there, such as Quicksilver, who had a studio that Dan Healy built because he was working with QMS then. . Santana would rehearse and also recorded there. The studio was built into an old WWII bunker on Oahu. Quicksilver was around playing at the Diamond Head Festival at the time. This was off-time for the band. Damned fine show too! Good weed, good friends, and the "Good Ol' Grateful Dead" with Gary Duncan of Quicksilver. Nice show other than the recording.

I'm passing on this one...The Dead played Great, but the poor recording quality the bad mix and the snare drum buzz makes it too distracting to listen
...
to. 3 Easy Winds and not one recorded right. It's a shame. The Dead Play great, but the horrible sound quality makes this one for hard core sycophants.
The recording ruined a great show. This show is a great example of what not to do when you record a show.

Unfortunately, some of the reviews below didn't look at the notes carefully or they would have noticed that only the beginning has crappy AUD sound. Then
...
it switches to a crystal clear SBD. However, the mix is strange (not by Bear or Bob, I'm sure) and Bobby and Phil are alternatively high in the mix, with Jerry backgrounded much of the time. However, this gives a person interested in their playing a chance to focus on them - and you can hear everything, sharp as can be. Check out the highlights here, Easy Wind (switches from AUD to SBD here), and Good Lovin' jam. The drummers are razor-sharp, and Bobby seems to be leading the jam... or is it because he's featured in the mix? Anyone who wants to learn to play the Easy Wind bass line, this is the best recording to listen to, bar none.
Apart from the fascinating historical document, this was a high-energy night! The boys are obviously feeling good, and there seems to be less of the cannabis fog that obscured them on many nights in 1970. They are alert, focused, and on!

Gotta love the early days.
Wahoo1, try Audio Hijack Pro. You can do all kindsa stuff, inlcuding eq the high ends with a 31 band eq...
Add Fission (also ... from Rogue Amoeba) and you can split and merge tracks easily. Awesopme combo for recording streams.
The sound is kinda rough; Deadbase discusses this in its ratings: you have to rate the sound according to the year it was recorded. You can't expect a 70 show to sound anything like an 89... if we did, there would never be a highly rated early show.
4 stars for the sweetness and totally interesting nature of this show.

is the equally great show from Merced that same year. Too bad there isn't an Other One or NFA but the Easy Wind makes up for it.
