on calling a tune in as few notes as possible try it on Deep Ellum?--Very cool version! Strange I was NOT impressed with the previous night but I am digging on this show. I love the in the middle of nowhere first set placement on this Sugar Magnolia, played like Deep Ellum is still hanging in the air. Gotta love those backing vocals on Sunshine Daydream! Brokedown Palace- Yeah it could be a set list from the closing of an 80's show but this is mid 1st set 1970-Mighty Fine! How sweet is the ensemble singing here. Cumberland-Always consider this Phil Country. Hurts Me Too- Really this is the biggest baddest blues the Dead render right here. The Dead could have rolled up on any blues festival and dropped this number and brought the house down. Me &My Uncle-The tune has remained constant through out the years. It is a bad ass tune! Bobby can sing. A nice China> Rider. I think what I enjoy about this set is it is somewhere between acoustic and electric in temperament. It has this laid back feel that is so mellow. Again great to hear the harmonies! Casey Jones-raps up a kind 1st set. Good Lovin-Joined already in progress Midnight Hour-Pig raps up one side and down the other! I threw this up on the Forum, hopefully some folks have the time to listen. Lost track Attics of my Life-and just a perfect version!!! Probably one of the few tunes that can make Me & Bobby McGee sound like an uptempo rocker- Jerry likes to add backing vocals to this tune! I have to call this a well crafted show, the band keeps shifting gears. Straight out 50's dance hall now with AROUND x2 -Can really pick up that Chuck Berry influence. and Phil lurks! Stephen>NFA>GDTRFB>LOVELIGHT (I knew Pig was going grab that last tune) What a difference one night makes!

damn nice nevertheless. This is a superb mix with all the players delivering and captured well. Highlights (that are higher than the other highlights): Deep Elem Blues: infrequently played; Garcia sings this version with a lot of feeling, reminiscent of the versions with the Dorks earlier in the month Hurts Me Too -- they didn't play this often enough pre-72. This late 1970 arrangement is an interesting one that hasn't yet showed up on an official release ... although I'm probably mistaken about that. ;) China->Rider: love that juicy tone on Bobby's guitar solo Good Lovin': the beginning is missing but, as already noted, the recording picks up at a decent spot where Jerry is riffing Sly (the Family Stone had a huge hit earlier in the year with Thank You (For Letting Me Be Mice Elf). NFA-GTRFB->Lovelight: This is a segment for the ages with the band really letting its hair down (and we're talking a lot of hair here). Numerous, beautiful "what song is this?" moments. I didn't hear Eyes of the World towards the end of NFA. But I did hear Sympathy for the Devil towards the very end of GTRFB! You can hear Pig announcing "Allright now we gettin' down!" just before he grabs the mic (they teased the song earlier before China Cat but apparently Pig didn't think it was "time to get down" right then). What follows is a simple, occasionally subtle but always intense Lovelight that ends with some of the most insane Bobby vocalizations that you'll ever hear (dig the yodeling from 9:30 to 9:45, then the usual sheets of white noise). After Lovelight, Bobby at least sounds like he's ready to keep playing. But one of the other players (Pig?) has apparently thrown in the towel (someone drunkenly slurs "we'll see ya" into a mic). A few excuses are mumbled and the band wanders off the stage.

DEAD shows. He has the best shows on the IA. Get December 26, 27 & 28 at Legion Stadium, Elmonte, CA. I downloaded this show years ago, I am back to to tell you how you can get it yourself. Nice show from 1970, when I was in 10th Grade. IF you're a fan of Pigpen like I am, you're gonna want this show. I recommend using your EQ during playback of most of the shows on the IA, this one included. Windows Media Player has a 10 band EQ and SRS WOW effects that enhance the sound. working out what they wanted to do with the American Beauty material, which Workingmans cuts were worth keeping (pretty much all of them) and in general giving off a much more polished sound compared to the more spontaneous and balsy summer shows. First of all, great backup vocals. Even the hits like Truckin', Sugar Mag, Casey Jones, all sound like they have extra effort given, with Phil vocals at top form and Jerr having a blast the whole time. If you can't find a reason why this show is special for how the band is playing (which to me seems ridiculous) download it because Charlie Miller found a board from late 70', a virtually undocumented period from the GD release spectrum, because of a lot of shaky recordings with flaws. This show is virtually flawless from a tech standpoint and the sound is solid. Get it before Rhino reads me review and releases it. Damn this sounds good!

an extra ambience. Not a matrix, but far from a dry soundboard. From the opening remarks advising people to "go wander and dance because there won't be any surprises and it sounds great everywhere". Listen to the crowd reaction to Bobby's lyric flub at the 7 minute mark in Truckin' or the reaction at the end of Attics. Check out the Thankyoufalettinmebemyself riff/jam as Good Lovin fades in! And Pig stating "No You Don't" to kick the band in Lovelight! Or JG's alternate turpentine lyric during GDTRFB. The only lowlights might be the final jam sounding somewhat loose and undirected. A five star Fall 1970 show for sure.

me too" reminds me why I love this band so much and why it was soooo much better (IMHO) with Pig. The version here smokes (cuts off at end, bummer). Overall, classic 1970.
