A solid Sunday conclusion to the run. The Cryptical > Other One sequence matches the New Orleans performance a month before, the transit into Black

Peter is a first. Big Boy Pete is a rarity, well performed. Other highlights include Dew, Good Lovin and Dancin. Uncle John is taken slower than usual, with a wistful, slightly mournful air to it. The Baby Blue is the same version as 6/27/69, 7/5/69 and 12/5/69; it's a shame the tape breaks off. The first track, so called New Speedway, actually consists of Bobby playing the basic riff over & over while the audience claps along and the equipment crew tries to get the rest of the band up & running. The audience tape quality here is horrid, but better for the Casey Jones and fortunately much improved for Dancin and Baby Blue.

show. Dancin', and all the other tracks from the lower-quality source (there are two sources) are superb enough to merit the highest mark regardless. Baby Blue sounds like what the Dead were later to become as musical giants of the 20th Century, though they played that song differently from this in the 80s & 90s.

the LSD... The Great Hwy is still there, even though it's not called the Great Hwy anymore. Nice show from 1970, when I was in 10th Grade. IF you're a fan of Pigpen like I am, you're gonna want this show. I recommend using your EQ during playback of most of the shows on the IA, this one included. Windows Media Player has a 10 band EQ and SRS WOW effects that enhance the sound. Here's one way to download this show: The IA recommends users of Windows XP view this web-page with RealPlayer. true, the aud recordings in the beginning are rough, although casey jones sounds pretty good. i'm so happy about this big boy pete...i've always loved

the big boy pete from 9.20.70 even though the vocals are almost inaudible...this version is maybe not as good as september's, but it's still a wonderful song. then into a very, very nice morning dew. generally i don't like hard to handle and i'm not crazy about this one either except for a groovy scat bit by pig before the jam. hate to complain about mixes, but...the guitar/organ lines between vocal phrases on TOO don't explode like they need to. you know, "...she lays on me this rooooose" WHAAAACKLAAABAAAAADEEELOOODEEELOOO...that's what needs to happen, otherwise the vocals just kind of hang there awkwardly...this seems to be problematic in many '70 TOO's...BUT, going into black peter is fantastic. cumberland blues cooks and then into a subtle, swaggering, dirty king bee that would probably make muddy proud. excellent harp playing and i didn't find it too painful as someone else mentioned...man, i have shows where the level on pig's harp is completely out of control and will make your teeth hurt. china cat>rider is so special in 1970, this one doesn't let you down at all, it's just beautiful and perfect. there are some questionable notes in the UJB harmonies, but when they hit the coda at the end all is forgotten...who am i listening to? CSN? back to the aud recording for dancing in the streets & baby blue (it really doesn't sound THAT bad). baby blue is absolutely wonderful, but it cuts and is a real bummer. no big deal anyway, i could stop at UJB and be happy with this one...

Crappy mix hurts my ears!
I love 1970 GD, but I would start somewhere else if you don't have any 1970 shows in your collection yet. Even the so-called SBD quality bit in the middle

suffers from a too-high-in-the-mix vocal, and Pig's harp will bring every dog in the neighborhood around. Good performance, a bit on the sloppy side. I'm going to cherrypick this down to one CD. Love the early arrangements of Dire Wolf, Black Peter, and especially UJB, but 3 stars for me.
