Touch of Grey
If memory serves me, it was either this night or the first night that the crowd was invited to the stage area after an afternoon show to be involved with
...
the filming of the Touch of Grey video.
Amazing weekend....welcomed Bruce to the scene as an opening act and watched the tall grass sway in the coastal breeze while his notes rained down out
...
of the sky....The Dead's sets of this era were still warming up from the extended absence following Jerry's illness....But it didn't take long to get them to an even higher plateau musically....Additional factors would mesh into play (like the advancement of sound equipment) uncovering that talent within the group which even "mainstream normies" could finally hear....And so Laguna Seca (from my perspective) was (one of) the starting points of a major run the boys had that lasted until the death of Brent (a major blow to all)....The sound, set list, and vibe are all recorded here and you can almost hear the conductor yelling "all aboooooard!!" as the greatest run of the bands later years was about to begin....A Mother's Day to remember.....And one I would not forget!

Sweet Show!
I love this one. Had it on tape a long time ago and glad to have it again. It may not be the pinnacle of the GD's "jamming", but there are many top-notch
...
versions of songs on here: West LA, Hell in a Bucket, Desolation Row, Scarlet Fire are all top-notch. Also a beautiful Throwing Stones (I especially like the "dizzy with eternity" harmonies).

pumped and the campgrounds were crazed to say the least. Calamari --- yes calmari!!!- what the fu%^? hahahah.....Sunshine Daydream the day before - Black Muddy nice closer to this show since there was a lake (pond?) behind the stage that I seem to recall behind Jer as I was watching .... and I remember thinking/hoping for the midnight set? nope it's just the filming of the Touch video which got boring after awhile! arghhh... but still one of the coolest places to check out the boys in the rolling hills of Laguna Seca!
Someone wrote this desolation row was somewhat average. I remember first getting this show on tape and being blown away by this version of desolation row.
...
Now, streaming it live--its even better. If anyone knows of other rockin versions of desolation from the archive--I'd love to know. Best to all! I miss the boys.....

They sound asleep at times
Show teases you with snippets of what could have been a 4 but even with the nice quality have to give it a 3. Jerry is uneven and sounds baked.

This 4 night N. California Stand does Nothing to counter the argument that many S Fran shows are among ... the mellowest in the Dead's catalog.
1st Set: Oh no, the "Mississippi" is missing from this tape. Anyways, I read it's a good edition. Lots of appealing holes fill out this plodding "Stranger."
...
Holy shit, Phil's coming in, loud and clear, on this tape. Finally. :) Musically, I'm digging the verve in "West LA," but it also could be that this tape is much more full-blooded than the last three shows I've heard. "Minglewood" lacks that simple, snappy groove but the band's dynamics sound more '88 than '87. (good thing)The same can be said of "Row" which is patiently conveyed with care. Step up, Phil and he does with a sweet, if muscially fragile "Box." "Desolation" is nicely performed, but better can be offered earlier in the year. "Ease" is too chill to sufficiently cap off a first set. 2nd Set: "Hell" is more than adequately vocalized by Weir but the band is Not raging. "Scarlet" is fun and active, but Jerry doesn't reach the highs hit with the subsequent "Fire." However late 'Fire' and the proceeding "Man Smart" feel fatigued. The latter is momentous only for Bobby cursing up a storm to create a stir in the, sure to be bored, crowd. "Drums/Space" are fine, but the "China" that follows is too meekly performed to capture the imagination. "Playing" comes next, and it's just kinda purposeless because they take the waaay too short jam nowhere. "Throwing" is standard... Bobby is game to make it outrageous but the band sounds tired... Bobby proves his "Lovelight" is virile to handle 15,000 fans but the rhythm section on smooth sailing autopilot. Jerry's not exploding but he does tell a nice little ditty. They leave the stage and come back with a run of the mill "NFA," that's well intentioned, but does not jump out of the tape. The following "Black" is more than an appropriate choice... More of a 2 1/2 star evening.

a problem in 1987. They fixed this in 88' using a secondary systen similiar to Shoreline Ampitheatre half way up the hill. The sun was really hot on this weekend maybe 95 in the shade. We guzzled several 40 oz bottles of Sunkist Orange in front of the board. Most of the Half-Step files are "CORRUPT" useless junk. All that exists of them is the OGG which will not convert to another format at all. What remains is 2 minutes of Bob Weir jokes and a snippet of music.

for me are Desolation Row and China Doll. Jerry's solo on China Doll is cosmic. Very solid Scarlet/Fire too.
