days in advance in the open log, with rock hounds, freaks and hippies offering this year's harvest and just about everything else. I lived about 7 blocks away, where all my dear friends and more were converged this day for a great preshow rage. Amusingly, my wife was not very amused when she came home, brief case in hand, to a door busting party. Don't worry honey, we're all going to the show! And we did, and the band played amazingly!

listen to the difference between the Music Never Stopped at the Kaiser 11/8/87 and this one. The first set rocks! Much tighter than all the Kaiser shows. I also agree, very cool Estimated jam. Almost reminds me of the original 77/78 versions. They loose a little steam after drums/space but, this is a good solid show. Worth the listen.

University of San Diego. They bought some relatively weak liquid LSD and I was joking how they were sucking on that bottle all weekend like it was a nipple. This was one of the best Berthas I have ever heard. We talked about it for years. The Maggies Farm into Cumberland the next night was also exceptional. Those were the good old days when I would disappear from college for weeks at a time when the boys were on tour.

1st Set: Very appropriate as a three-night opener, "Hell" serves its hyped-up purpose. We're going right into "Sugaree." This one's na up and down affair

going from listless (6:45-7:00) to amazing (7:15-7:28)(7:55-8:20)"Minglewood's" a good time. "FOTD" is almost charming due to Brent's twinkling fingers. After an enthusiastically received and played "Far From Me" the boys attempt the delicacy of "Bird Song." Plenty of energy is exorcised for this though the noisiest parts make the most imprints, only because they're the parts with the most activity. Sunny smiles and bright tones epitomize this perky, light "Music." 2nd Set: "Bertha" is brisk and absolutely delightful. "Man Smart" is thick and groovy. I recognize that the impassioned "Ship of Fools" is one of singer-songwriter's (Costello, R. Adams, K. Williams) favorite songs to cover, but the musical variance from song to song is nil. That being said, this version does stand out. "Estimated" borders on absurdity; unexpectedly full-bodied for an '87 version, it undeniably enters some odd rhythmic patterns and spaces. "Drums" naturally flows into semblance, and gets delirious by the late 5's. "Space" grounds and thereby warms the tones so the band can emerge with "The Wheel." Boy, Brent carries the fairydust synths up til the first words. Alright, it's a purposeful thing...Phil (?) with his "Hey's" a full cycle before the first verse. Anyways, the energy remains high during "Gimme," it's not superior...but the song's tones feel more fleshed out..., even if the end result is nowhere near as exhilerating as The Spencer Davis Group's. "Wharf" isn't exactly smooth sailing, but it's undeniably moving. Though "Sugar" is well-played and exclamatory, the one I heard by DSO last Thursday night was hungrier. Bobby, yelps do not make up for a lack of unassuming innocent charm. We're encoring tonight with the first Dylan of the evening, a touching "Knockin." Very fine show. 3 3/5th stars

downright Weir'd... I have an older version on tape that is actually much better with the audience loud in the mix. When you hear their reaction to Bobby really freaking out, you rememeber what it was like when the boys had one of their sparkling, magical moments. Wish I coulda been there! Rated 5 for the Etsimated, Prophet, and Ship of Fools...

Dead on the brink of obsession. Recently I have been downloading shows according to the current day, today being 11.13.2004, so this is how I have come across this show. Most of the shows I will give a listen to and discard, but there are few and far between I will save in order to hear time and time again...I began this process in order to hear the best of the best...The point of this being this is a show I will keep, and listen to over and over, because it is simply a tremednous joy to hear these guys play this way!
