Sorry St. heathen you dont know what you’re talking about. Plus you actually mention 76’ ? That whole year was fair to halfway good at best. Boys were
...
setting up for a real comeback year 77’ some extremely fine shows.and Terrapin hit us with full steam.
Im all about 70-74 anyway, but Ive learned there are hidden gems among the years and always seems at years end. Nov and Dec ,Kick back with some of those shows but skip 76’
Really dig how this show opens with a hot half step>Franklins. About half way thru the second set things start to catch fire, and the show rocks out nicely to its end
Peace to all

Wow, A very heartfelt Half Step> Rio Grande.
Great Vocal mix- Garcia, Donna, Bobby
and Jerry sweet on his licks.
When folks get hyper critical on shows
it ... just reminds me of the Brent line
"You must mean water
when you get down on your knees
and beg for blood"
The Transition into Franklin's
is super whiplash abrupt.
They are already cooking
so in three minutes
I have left the Rio grande
far behind.
This is less well known then the 74 shows at this location
in the same way Feb 73 Madison gets all the raves
Was thinking about connections
Half step>Rio Grande
Franklins>Roll away the dew
(Both single tunes in two parts)
I tell you that is a huge opener
probably went Looks Like Rain
for collective breath catching
(Just can't beat Donna with Weir-on this tune)
They have not ventured back to it
since Donna left in 79?
Peggy-O or Fennario
Just a classic
Me& My Uncle-Weir is a disco bad-ass in a Continental Suit
Big River- Instrument wise ----All that I hear making any progress
is Garcia and probably Weir.
Keith channeling future dissonance to come in the 90's.
When I stick the headphones deep in my ears
I get more Rhythm Section
Ramble on-called that super on tour quick, so distinctive
Deeper Bass tones, much welcomed
Minglewood-Such a bad boy tune with biblical overtones
Stagger Lee- This tune was great for the slide
MUSIC is good (but Keith is off to my ear)
Jerry sounds like a rip roaring fire
(One of the few spots in the set
where I can really pick-up his chemistry
with Phil and the Rolling Thunder)
Epic jam really amazing that the Dead could
get so much sound
Always marvelled at how like Security or ushers
were NOT completely blown away
I mean they had to notice a difference
from the other bands just going to and fro?
The Dead's chemistry tended to be fragile
in the main because one player having an off night
could mess with the entire DEAL.
If you listen to the periods between band member changes
you can kinda FEEL it coming.
Still even though BERTHA is a struggle at times
The Band closes ranks and just wills it forward.
I like BERTHA in Set Two
If for nothing else
because all the levels are square by then
>Good Lovin' -Weir just slays this vocally
and Garcia likes that La Bamba groove.
They almost never played this anywhere
but as Set Two closer in the later years.
Encore in Maine in the 80's was super sweet
and very rare.
B.E. Woman- I like this Second Set!
(Jerry seems more into vocals here)
Maybe why it ended up firmly rooted in First Set.
Estimated>Eyes -for me the only combo besides Scarlet>Fire
that gives weight to those who claim 77/78 over 73
Estimated is just a very ripe on the prowl tune
It is even more funky and yet sublime over SHAKEDOWN
Jerry killing it on the backing vocals
Good Recording to pick -up on band subtly
From night to night coming in with more or less mojo
Weir good here but backing vocals over the top.
Garcia letting it fly, wish he had a little more elbow room
but he gets in some fierce guitar work
Phil steaming along , drawing Garcia onward
Donna nice, moaning low
Viva la Difference...
Jam>Edge of the Phil Zone>Jam>
abrupt shift into EYES>
Good jam after the first round of vocals
Lyrics going good, Garcia perhaps slightly raspy
Second Jam more Garcia less chop
Lyrics fine, some dissonance on keys
not what I prefer in Eyes
but sets up the drummers
Garcia taking the full measure on that last lead otro
That right there
I could hear it, feel it, live it
10 minute mark or there about
Drumz>That is what I want DRUMMING!
(I could dig Space but wow it did a number on me
especially on certain evenings)
This is a strong show but I probably would put the previous
NJ show a little higher on the wow factor
if you give a touring band time off
two weeks is like a Deja-Vu Opening Night.
Hey I would rather be in Miami on December 12
than the North East
I guess that is why I moved down
to the land of endless summer in 95/96
Cool jam out of Drumz
It is NFA but it has some other Blues chops for sure
swirling around probably why they include GDTRFB chaser
All up tunes after drums
They just wanted to rock the Jai-Alai one last time
Pretty long drive Alligator Alley >Tamiami Trail so they probably drove up i-95 and cut across 1-4 right into Tampa for a venue they played two nights in 73 while Donna was at home.
GDTRFB-was proud to find out first crack at this tune was at my Alma-Mater in 1970, (instrumental no less)
Around & Around- Jerry could channel Chuck
and Donna * Bob are having fun.
e) They played an epic jammed U.S. Blues at this joint in 74

Looks Like Rain is sweet and Donna is really on-key. They are all on super fine form during this show.
Excellent sound quality, richer tone than the other IMO. Thanks!!

For me, this 1/2 step>Franklins just blows away all others. While there are better half steps, The only other ... Franklins' that come close are 02/26/77 and maybe 12/04/79. The interplay between Keith and Jerry here just rocks. Listen for that quiet, sweet jam before the final verse. Beautiful! Every jam is unique with its own feel.

sorry JJ, but this FT is atrocious.
Sight/sound unseen/heard, I would put ANY 1/2 step -> Franklin's from 1976-77 over this crapfest.

Good show, two high energy sets from start to finish, although I gotta say I don't like one song post-drums, which is what ... bumps this 4.5 star show down to 4 stars.

As good now as it was then! This sure beats my muddy copy of an audience tape. Although the Jai-Alai Fronton was a cozy venue (~2000 Heads), the building's
...
acoustics were less than desirable. The sound crew worked a miracle and the band seemed in good spirits that night. Jerryâs grin was ear-to-ear for one reason or another. This was a special treat in South Florida which was finally getting its music scene back on track in the aftermath of the Anita Bryant Brigide's attacks on Jim Morrison following the ill-fated Dinner Key show. Most concerts of the day were relegated to a pathetic venue in the Everglades called the Sportatorium. Aside from the politics of all that, the show was crisp, generally tight with those wonderful floundering moments that made the Dead what they were.

It's generally accepted that the Dead hit a quintessential peak in '77-- especially during the May run of shows. After '77, things started a gradually
...
nosedive, largely attributed to Garcia's growing addiction(s). This show in '78 is terrific, though its reveals the cracks that were gradually forming. The band is sloppy at times, Donna is getting more out of tune in parts, and Keith (whose playing and keyboard sound I love) treads water with standard rhythm playing. That said, the Dead were wonderful in those years, and this show has great songs, fun performances. You can make an interesting comparison with the crispness of a '77 show, though.

This show is amazing. That being said as a show it's actually not all that great- it's about as fluffy 77-78 soundiing as they ever got, with VERY steady,
...
almost cheesy drumbeats that, due to the fact that they play a lot of Set1 type songs, can get tiring. HOWEVER, the Half Step and Franklin's Tower are AWESOME, and the last NFA and GDTRFB are pretty good as well. It's one of the few shows that I find myself skippping many songs, but the ones that are goood are great, and Keith is really bangin on the keyboard they way with that electric piano-y thing he played a lot at thsi time.
