on the heavier critique of Garcia. His job description was leader of the band. And so was he. I due give props to Hornsby for the sense of urgency in his playing. And for my money it was not the same when he stepped away. This seems like a night when Garcia Wanted to explore ballads Pretty decent Truckin’ Blowtorch of a Watchtower Jerry picked the right moment for China Doll Where else would anyone Want to be on a Saturday Night! Weir outdoes himself this evening. And the weight is one of the better of the many encore choices available to the boys..

Better than I remember
That night I felt like Friend of the Devil sapped the energy out of the show. Then they went into Little Red Rooster which was one of my least favorite

Bobby "blues" Weir tunes [give me Minglewood or C.C. Rider any day!!]. And other than Desolation Row, which I've loved since the first time I listened to Dylan's version back in the early 70's, I remember being disappointed in the show, while my Bobby loving buddy was ecstatic. All these years later, I'm still not a huge fan of the Bobby tune selection [though it was a Saturday night, so I knew one tune was mandatory], but I cannot deny it was a well played show. Could have lived with just about anything other than Spoonful and Watchtower [sorry.... Jerry always cooked on Watchtower, but did we need two Dylan covers???]. Anyway.... 4 stars for the performance, 4 stars for Jerry's tune selection [even with the FOTD] b/c I'm a sucker for Tennessee Jed, China Cat, Ship of Fools, and China Doll, and 2 stars for the Bobby song selection averages out to 3.33333333.... Aw, what the hell, Jerry smoked it up on Jack Straw and didn't just go thru the motions on the over played Promised Land. So I'm rounding up to 4 stars.... Yeah, I gotta rate this one on Jerry and Hornsby showing up big time!!!

Close But No Cigar
A decent show with quite a few off moments and flubs. Plenty of enjoyable highlights and a wonderful recording, but it just cannot warrant a 5.

in the taper's section so my sound was dialed-in quite nicely. Hornsby was on fire (easily the best show I caught with him in the band). The Jack Straw (as mentioned a few times) is one for the ages. I love the Hornsby-era Straws and this one (9-19-90 is a close 2nd) is the king - For those who were there, Phil's bombs out of the jam are unforgettable. Truly mind-blowing. (and the FEELING, sadly, is not captured on tape). The low point of the show is what follows - FOTD. Only a minor complaint but the energy following Jack Straw was epic and then -WHOOSH - gone thru the garden roof (which would be blown away later by Promised Land and Sat Nite). The Rooster is great - another BEST for me. Check it for yourself. No dogs in the 2nd set for sure....Fine readings of all the tunes, and a particularly gorgeous China Doll. Perhaps it was the chemistry in my body or the chemistry on stage (prolly BOTH), but the jam in Sat Nite seemed to roll and build and roll and build again, only to roll and build yet again. A GREAT version of a tune that, prolly ranks last on my "wish list" of show closers. Yet, I was looking forward to hearing this version again. Anyhowz, a great, underrated show from one of the last great years. Enjoy it. My memory does.

To Rubin IMHO, the best Hornsby era Jack Straw (and Sugaree) is 6-25-91. 1st set is pretty lacking in energy in my opinion(although I do think TJed is
...
pretty smokin'). As well, it sounds very much as Hornsby has explained in interviews and what-not post Garcia's death, that Garcia was really not into the Dead at this point. It took a good talking to by Bruce (which occured btwn the MSG and Boston Runs) to convince Jerry to give it his all again. It shows when one compares Jerry's playing from this run to the Boston Run.

Its pretty hard to compare later Jack Straws with the early 70s versions. Sort of like comparing slow vs. fast TLEOs. That said, of the non-slowed down

pretty versions this is so far and away the best one I've heard I have nothing else to say on it. The Good Times opener is done very well, Bobby hits a real high note while Bruce is hitting a real high note and it sounds so great. Other set 1 highlights are the Jack-a-Roe, strong powerful version. The Tenn. Jed is also really kickin. Took me a few listens, but then it cliqued big time. The Jed is huge. I'm usually pretty critical of China> Riders b/c it seems like everyone was incredible, i dont know that this one was incredible but it was pretty damn close. Ship of Fools, whatever, doesn't fit imho. The truckin> spoonful> He's Gone is done very well. space laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaags. meh to watchtower. The China Doll is heavenly. Oh I forgot about the Promised Land, considering how many versions there are its not usually worth mentioning...this one is. Jerry belts it out. Saturday Night is sloppy. The Weight, I just love hearing Jerry sing this, period. Phil does pretty well also. giving a 4, really 3 1/2
I love this version of China Doll!!!!!!melted into a dream!and yea, i know thats from stella.

either. I wish I was a headlight on a northbound train! I had an audience recording of this at one time, and the crowd was spectacular. One of those rare shows where an audience recording may be even more exhilerating to listen to than the soundboard - but the quality on this one is fantastic, and the show is one of thse super-high energy shows - Bruce brings it out in them. Not sure where I was on 9/14/91, but if I could go back in time, I can tell you where I would be!Download this - you wont regret it.

in the summer either. The Jack Straw is incredibly hot. Any '91 Jack Straw with Bruce usually is. The Jack a Roe, Tennesse Jed and Promised Land are also great. Nice China > Rider. Such a great Fall Tour!!
