I agree with jboyaquar that the amount of reverb present in this capture is substantial. But it does wonders for softening Jerry’s questionable singing

tonight. If I had to chose one or the other, I’d chose the former - the later being more objectionable. The heavy reverb is clean and doesn’t get in the way of the performance. I listened to all the other uploads and chose this one simply because it masks Jerry better.
And yeah, as stated, this Rooster is great. It’s right up there with the break out version from 8/19/80. I’ve always been partial to Candyman, being a serious blues guy. And this one is competent with Jer’s singing not getting in the way... too much. I also kept the Me & My Uncle > Mexicali Blues and Cassidy > Don't Ease Me In segues which were lots ‘o fun.
The competent above average continues through the second set with a nice Iko Iko opening. Always loved the Lovelight second set closers. BTW, this 3 ½ star good is a recommendation for collecting - not a dismissal - since the rating is relative to the band’s prime years.

...
shows ever in the history of the Dead, but they were starting to get their groove back after a rather rocky '86. I'll never forget these.

I remember Jerry seeming very happy, animated and somewhat footloose during this, my first show at the age of 16. 21 years ago? How is that possible?

I think I am still there as the first chords of Shakedown rearrange my synapses. Leaving the quaint UIC Pavillion that evening, covered in afterbirth, I was changed for good. . . and I mean good.

This was my best Rooster ever, I still remmember the dancing going on around me, thinking that we/they were chanelling the energy of generations of Chicago
...
bluesmen that night. This night ranks among my favorite of all time, the energy feed between and among the band and audience was a perfect circle. Plus the comments of the local women who were standing 'guard' at the doors were hysterical, like they were caught at ground zero of this vortex they didn't understand at all and were trying desparately to frame in familiar terms. Like how we needed to be wearing slips and shoes. Teeheehee...

1st Set: Things always start out well when a 'Shakedown' is involved. Jerry stays bouncy and funky throughout, but not a standout... The howlers emerge

for a monstrous '87 "Rooster." The place is just exploding at 6:40. "Candyman" is nicely received, but standard. "Uncle" skips along, continues the solid momentum building in this set. "Mexicali" is standard tho with wimpy Weir vocals. "Brown" is more successful, Jerry's inflection adds some poignancy. Bobby's much more alive during "Cassidy." He even sounds excited to be playing it. It's an agressive version. The set ends brightly with a standard "Ease."
On this tape, the encore plays next. "Baby Blue" is paternalistically delivered.
2nd Set: A familiar opener of '87 "Iko" opens the proceedings rather ordinarily. The drummers create a loose pace from which the band conveyed a flowing "LLR." Of course the crowd needs their Phil fill and "box" does its job (tho it's mostly the novelty of having Phil out front that provides the smiles.) Yea... good call with "He's Gone." It's rather by the book tho, even if they're blue ballsing me with "Truckin." "Drums/Space" are what they are...tho 'Space' gets slightly sinister to prepare for an ever-intensifying "TOO." After that fine specimen we encounter an increasingly strong "Black Peter." The urgency is still there for a blockbuster abrupt "Around & Around" Yea, the party continues for a riotous "Lovelight." And that's all folks!

This show was really fun. There are a lot of teasers in this one, foreshadowing the setlist of the next day (which was pretty predictable).
The first ... one (4/9/87) was much better. In this show they were starting to get a bit mellower and less energetic than the first night. The last show in the run (4/11/87) was really bad, almost sonorous.

the whole show rocks. TOp 5 roosters of all time. it is a solid audience recording. nothing muddy about it. just not a sbd.

Sweet show, band is on for sure, sound is a little hollow but I won't be too picky...3-4 stars for sound.. five stars for the jams.. six stars for red
...
rooster and couple other tunes that were just smokin...if your a dead head and your use to crappy cassettes and some the stuff that was circulated prior to the spoils we enjoy now the sound should not be too much of an obstacle to enjoy this show.

The set list does not begin to capture this very memorable night. This brought me back to the Dead, after a few years of thinbking the Band had lost it,
...
which, during some shows in the mid-80s, was clearly true. A great night!

The finest Rooster ever? not my favorite song, but by far my favorite version.
the band is SSSSmoking,tight interplay and extended jamming in the standards.
After ... a couple of doozies the crowd is going wild and phil redirects the applause to the drummers ........ "Billy and Mick"

As the previous reviewer noted, this was a very high-energy night. I was sitting front row in the balcony, on Brent's side, just about 40 feet above/away

from him. The vitamin A had kicked in and I was just sitting there eating up every bit of it.
The entire show was tremendous, but here are some highlights:
1) Phil coming out on stage for set II, with the "Frankenstein" walk. After a couple tunes in set II, Phil comes up to the mike and screams, "You guessed it!" He then launches into Box Of Rain, which at this time was still quite rare. I had called the tune in the parking lot before the show, and was snubbed by several folks. Hee hee!
2) The guy banging on the keyboards at the end of Space with Brent was Mickey!
3) During space, Bob was getting these strange sounds from his guitar with a slide... it reminded me of some wierd dinosaur call or something. Very odd indeed.
4) Brent's honky-tonk piano solo during Around and Around... "Well, that sounded so SWEET!"
This show is definitely worth your time. Enjoy!

...This night, and the previous night, are responsible for the depth of my love for this band. The first night blew me away completely, and this night

did so in a completely different way. I remember sitting on the steps in the aisle after the show staring at the stage and muttering "I never knew music could sound like that"...
Sure, it could have been the acid, but listen for yourself and see if you don't agree that this is one scorching performance.
The Shakedown...Jerry picks the run and strums the "Chonk chonka chonk chonka chonk..." that lets everybody know whast's in store. The energy in the place was amazing...the tiniest indoor place I ever saw them in besides Hampton...when Jerry strummed those chords with his back to the crowd and they started cheering, he started boppin' up and down to count it off and then...
Womp bam, bwowwwwwwwwwwwwwwyyyyyeeeeeeeehhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...Jerry spun around as he hits that opening chord, the lights went on him, his face was beaming with a HUGE smile, and he started swaying and shufflin' up to the microphone...moving toward the frenzied crowd...eating up the energy...and then he sang the opening line and the crowd went even nuttier and the band ate it up and we ate it up and we all got full on this night.
Each song is a standout version...He's Gone is SO SOULFUL it felt like church...good church...the jam is wonderful...jungle noises flying everywhere...Brent and Phil sending weird noises back and forth until Brent doubled Phil over in laughter with some barrage of wierdness...Drumz was over the top...comin' into the Other One was somethin' else...somebody came out to Brent at his keyboard to talk about something with him, and Brent slid over and motioned for the dude to sit down...he did and Brent and he dueled a little which culminated in each of them literally pounding on the keyboards...it was quite loud, and when it ended the swirl of the Other One had already begun...the spotlights twirlin around the stage...6 or 8 of them chasing one after the other faster and faster until just as Bobby began singing, they one by one landed on Bobby...after anothe high energy romp through the Other One, the transition into Black Peter was jaw dropping. It was as if they opened up a pressure valve onstage and just let the tension fall gradually until it landed on those sweet sliding chords that signal the start of Black Peter. It was truly mesmerising. The rest of the show is very good...especially Brent's solo during Around n Round...
I'm goin' on 17 years of memory here, but I can still see it all as if it were yesterday...I can't wait to hear it...
