The music of 1975 was some of their most adventurous musically, with the track "Blues for Allah" being something completely different. Too bad it had a short run but I can see why it did.
All you have to do is go from the rehearsals and shows of 1975, with the new material from BfA to 1976, where they did a complete 180 musically. I compare it to the change from the hardcore psychedelic GD of 1968/69 transitioning into the Americana band of 1970 up to 1974. Either way, it's all good music and it's great to have access to them. Sound quality is pretty good too; the highlights for me would be all the material from Blues for Allah, esp. the instrumental "Help/Slipknot", very cool. "The Peggy-O" is nice and chill too. Everything else is good

Phish and the GD are two completely different bands but we all know that Phish and the phish heads would not exist - nor would any other "jam" band for that matter - without the Dead, their approach to live music and of course, the Deadheads.

Listened to Animals today first time in years and am amazed at how well it holds up. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for The Wall. Too much angst and a production that forever anchors it as a relic of the 80s.

This is a great time capsule recording. Lovely to hear them trying out some of the songs that would become staples. The Phish phans on here have logged into the wrong database. What is the point of comparing one with the other?

This show is brilliant.

Not only for its first ever live debut performances of Crazy Fingers (and as an opener, you can only imagine how proud of that tune the boys were, and rightly so) and also not to mention the DEBUT of the Holy GD Tryptic of Help/Slip/Frank (Help On The Way being lyricless still at this stage, still being birthed into the American Beauty of a song that it would become). Great songs and performances all around from BIODTL, Deal to Big River and Peggy O too even Sugar and US Blues. Speaking of which, Allah sings his Blues this show, we got one of the very few love performances of Blues For Allah (without lyrics too, just as everything else from that ultimate album would become, but at this time it was a period of great growth and change and explorations crearively and otherwise!

But still, THIS is the first Crazy Fingers AND the first Help on the Way, you can see even hearing it now what is yet to come, the infinite, and then theres that 9min Slipknot! And that enlightening first ever Franklin’s Tower is absolutely incredible, I love hearing the audience totally jive with this entirely new music being perofmend for them by a band they/we all love dearly. Truly history-making for those keeping track. And this 72-78 era is my favorite of their tunes and creative output, I love also the stuff before and after, but between that bracket of time is This here Grateful Dead 1975 sweet spot.

These are my favorite songs of theirs if I’m being honest. This whole period is like my sweet spot for the band. Great show all around. I would have loved to hit any of those ‘75 shows had I been born (‘85 guy here, I was born on the day they played the Oklahoma City Zoo Amphitheater in Sept, really decent show for 1985 in fact!).

Changing out: So many whiners...the quality is good, not great, but the gist of the show is...WE"RE BACK. Anyone that was at this show was in ecstasy. And the bean-counters found Blues for Allah. How rare? hmmmm. Anyone can say anything on this site? why so controlling. Phish found one of the keys to the door, opened up a portal for all time. I was a regular 73 to 78 and didn't figure out what was going on until this show. I was hanging off the stage at Winterland in awe. Robbie hobbinot was f*ing amazing, then Jery gives the ultimate surprise. What a night. Better, Best, Big, Battered Kingfish with fries., Kieth and Catfish Donna. WTF. Great Balls of Fire.

This is hands down the best Peggio of all time. I listen to both the 75 Audience Recordings almost religiously they are absolutely amazing. In a year almost void of Dead shows this is a small snippet of their ever changing style. A perfect Charlie Miller Remastered Sound Board could not make this better. Usually I am Sound Board fan. But this captures something else. 2nd Solo is my fav.

Crazy Fingers sounds great with the echo of the audience recording.

BIODTL is one of my favorite versions of all time. The Bass Beats comment before the song. Best ending of any BIODTL solo ever in my opinion. That screeching end note. And god damn Jerry's rhythm afterwards with the piano is awesome. Keith is superb.

Peggio is amazing. I have Two things in my Will. Who my Cat will go to. And to play this Version of Peggio at my funeral.

Franklin's Tower: My Number One and Two are both 75. This and 9-28-75. Both have amazing smooth intros. This one I consider slightly smoother. For 9-28 listen to the Menke Aud. Again awesome super smooth but with drums and bass higher in the mix you can feel that back beat groove much harder.

I grew up in Burlington, Vermont. Phish's hometown. Me and all my friends listened to their albums growing up, not so much live stuff. Phish has some absolutely great stuff. Nobody can't deny.

Listen to Hoist and try and tell me most of that is not some great music. Sample In A Jar is my favorite Phish Song Of Time.

Their least weird album, mostly great rock songs. Lyrics are actually less weird than Dark Star, Eleven, China Cat.

Chicago 98 Freebird is the Best. From knocking the mics so all 4 have to hold on at one point. To actually seeming go into a Acapella Psychedelic Jam at one point where you think they are not on point at all and come back. The ending. To Phishman, the drummer who wears a dress, coming back to say goodbye or something and either says gibberish or gets cut off immediately.

This was one of those nights you knew the Dead were going to show up. Billed as Jerry & Friends. This billing happened a few times but it didn't always mean the Dead would play.
But this night was magical the moment I walked in the door. Blown away again after getting through a couple bands first. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Journey play? The Mirrors?
I just went to the hallways to trip on the posters until I knew it was "time" What a trip it was!

Hey now , in keeping with the purpose of the comments, posters should be keeping to reviewing the show and the quality of the performance and the recording. Thats what this is for. What is anyone doing talking about Phish or any other band for that matter in reviews of all these precious and a few admittedly not quite as precious shows that we are so very blessed to have literally at our fingertips on demand pretty much all the time?
Look family, theres no denying that the Dead are the greatest group of musicians that ever played the circuits. Theres other bands out there sure but with these guys nobody else really compares especially for individuals who have been around long enough to have been on the bus before we lost Jerry. There was nothing like a Grateful Dead concert. I was blessed to have managed to catch a couple shows as a high school kid in '95. I still try to go see Phil and Dead and Company and i love what they do. Im sorry but Phish does nothing for me. I didnt go see the fare the well tour primarily due to my disappointment in the decision to bring Trey in. Id have preferred maybe say Chris Robinson or John Mayer. Honestly Phish just seems like idk ive heard only a small amount of stuff from them but thats bc i dont think they sounded very good. But then i know what the Dead have out there so i guess ignorance can be bliss for other people who really just dont get it.
I gotta apologize for breaking with the format. Im just tired of coming here and having to read crap when i am looking at how others appreciate this music and how they experience it in their lives. Other bands matter but not here. That being said , i havent given this one a thorough listen. Im just checking out these 75 shows but the peggy-o is a little nugget and of course the inclusion of that blues for allah, one of those tunes that obviously meant alot to the band yet were shelved right away makes the show a must listen for those who are trying to hear it all like i am. It seems like people are getting down on Phish because they have a lot of the same fanbase as the Dead and improvise within a rock and roll format.

I mean..really? This is what constitutes "yearning for a different age"? Dancing to music with improvisational leanings?
Finding life on the road punctuated by orgasmic rock concerts to be more interesting than working a 9 to 5?

I can't imagine how sickening you people would seem to a Garcia or a Coltrane who devoted their entire life to the universal joy of music (and heroin)
It is really a shame that some people are so hesitant to shake their own nostalgia trips off and live in the present.

This goes doubly for Phish fans who dealt with all of this "You think you're having fun but it's never gonna be as good as it USED TO BE" old man grumbling 20 years ago and now pass it on to people finding their dancing shoes with younger bands.

It's all relative, I'm sure the real old school Dead Heads might have some sort of fluttering bong soaked memories of calling Kerouac a cranky old man for disdaining THEIR whole scene for not being as pure and as wonderous as the one to come before.

It's all music. You either move with the times or you don't. Just remember how you used to feel about traditionalist stick-in-the-muds before you became one yourself.

There's so much absurdity here. I couldn't care less if someone hates the Dead or hates Phish. I love both. I also love a lot of other bands instead of listening to every single version of every song the same 2 bands play.

But some of the BS on here is ridiculous. Phish needs to "chill with the political and religious stuff" and they jam for 2 minutes and then start talking? Literally never heard that happen at a Phish show.

Phish drew 1,000 people in Dallas in 1995? Possibly. Doesn't matter either. But they also played Madison Square Garden and the Boston Garden before Jerry died, so to act like they were small potatoes until "gifted" a fanbase is stupid. That's the thing about fans of quasi-underground music. They act like the size of your fanbase doesn't matter until they need it to in order to prove that another and is better.

Phish absolutely has a debt to the Dead, but a much bigger one to the Stones, Zeppelin and Progressive Rock.

either way. i feel terrible for people who lived through the 70s and aren't familiar with the tiniest fraction of amazing psychedelic music being made around the world because they were lodged so hard up the Dead's butt. they're my favorite band, but this idea that the Dead on their worst night was better than anyone on their best? thats like some abused wife cult member shit. jerry would straight slap you for having so little respect for the thousands of amazing musicians out there getting weird and beautiful.

Why are we talking about Phish?

This is a cool show. The recording is pretty damn good too.

Peggy O is a treat at that mellow tempo. I didn't listen to the whole show yet, but I did listen to Blues For Allah, and it's outstanding. I would note that coming out of the drums, it seems like they do a brief King Solomon's Marbles jam.

I could not score tickets to the last five night in '74 or Snack Sunday. Finally we got a ticket for something that look like it could be a full Dead show, but we were not sure since Mickey, Bill, and Phil were not in bands on the list.

The Kingfish portion of the show was hot. When Bill G. called out who was in the band everyone was full of cheer. It was the Dead!!!

Crazy Fingers opener was unknown but it did not matter. We loved it right off the bat! It was a long night with 4 bands, and we all went home glowing as the Dead were back with new material..........

The sound on this audience recording is a special treat. Every instrument and voice is crisp in the mix, w/ just enough audience and arena-reverb magic. This set opens with the 1st-ever performance of Crazy Fingers, and it's easily one of the best I've heard - a stunning, joyous cascade. 6/17 is also the 1st time this band performed H>S>F (Help's played w/o lyrics, and Slipknot goes nuclear).

Check out JG's sparkling flurry at 2:42-44 in BIODTL. Just a couple of seconds, but emblematic of so much to these ears. Smack dab between '74 and the later 70s sound of this band. Uncle Sam is hiding out, folks. Big River and the US Blues rock AND roll it right out of the park. Weir and Donna blending so tastefully - gosh, musta been FRESH to hear this band going new places like this in 1975.

One from the Vault was recorded 2 months later(Aug 13), and of course released on compact disc in '91.

I saw 180 shows over a 25 year period (70-95). I've seen around 5 Phish concerts starting in '95 and ending around '98. There were about 1,000 folks in Dallas at my 1st Phish show at Deep Elum Live. There are a whole bunch of things I could say, but I'll leave at this; if Jerry was still alive and Phish was still together...........there would still only be 1,000 folks at the Phish show. BTW, IMO, they are all great, great players.....every damn one of them.

coming from a guy who was lucky enough to catch 80+ dead shows (late 80s and 90s) and 80+ phish shows (mostly 94-96, but still grab 2-3 shows annually) i cant understand this argument. I love both bands! i also love miles davis, bach, the beach boys and the supremes. there is a lot of music i dont like, but still understand that it is 'good music'- i am a 'dead head' at heart and i play them more than any other band- but i realize that just because i dont like something, it doesnt mean it 'sucks'-
Trey makes a very good point in the movie 'Bittersweet Motel' when someone compares him to Jerry- he says (paraphrase) he loved Jerry, but he isnt Jerry- isnt trying to be him. people, in general are always looking for a convenient comparison- it just isnt that simple.
crowd: yes, the phish crowd sucks- but as i recall, so did the GD crowd, at times. i remember selling the next night's Deer Creek tickets at the campground following a show due to disbelief and disgrace from that nights events (gate crashers and such)- i was done and walking away- the scene had collapsed and i wanted nothing to do with it. but there are also good souls at the phish shows- i can attest for that. and while the phish of today may not be what we were getting in the mid 90s, it is still so much better than 99% of the music that is out there today. if you dont like em- dont go see them, but stop all the rediculousness about 'they suck'. just my 3 cents....

If I remember correctly this was one of the shows billed as Jerry Garcia and Friends or something like that, with Kingfish. We were all so happy to see them all playing together after they supposedly broke up the band.

With regards to who is better Jerry or Trey --WTF? Talk about missing the entire point of everything!

Trey is a hell of a guitar player and he most certainly has his own sound. I love the GD but the jams Phish has thrown down throughout the years are just better. Lyrically sure the GD is better. But Phish takes me to THAT place more often than the Dead. Overall I love the Jerry and I love Trey but if i had to pick id go with Trey. So go ahead and hate on this all you like while I go enjoy some great music.

I love the idea of a huge crowd of large-eyed folks exiting the Winterland after this show and saying, "Holy shit! That 'Roll Away' song, with the huge instumental intro, is siiiiick." Funny thought.

This is very fun show and the whole band really brings the heat for these set of Demo Shows.

There are several transition Dead periods and this one created so much excitement and the promise of a thrilling adventure. I remember the summer BFA came out –it was everywhere and the blessed few who were able to score their very own personal copy of “Make Believe Ballroom – the 1975 Spot Check”, ( produced on the fabulous Amazing Korny Fone Record Label, [and who in turn made countless tapes of the vinyl decades before OFTV was released] ), played it till the groves wore out.

So the opportunity to capture as many of these moments is a gift or wondrous import and I am appropriately Grateful.

And so to Phishy Things.

Folks began whispering things to me about this Phish band around ’96. “Dude! You gotta check these cats out! You’ll love em! They’re just like the Dead!”. I’ll state here that Phish-heads embraced this praise the way most folks embrace raw sewage in their cereal bowl. More on that in a bit.

We finally went to see Phish at MSG 12-29-98 and 12-30-98. The bro I went with and I were stoked to finally see this band and I’d acquired several CD’s and we both felt prepared. We weren’t. The shows we saw were so jaw-droppingly good and the jams so fierce and epic and the discipline these guys have and the quality of both their skill and their feel were a revelation. And the shows were fun! These guys PLAY on stage. They goof around, ( like the Dead did frequently ).

Somewhere way back on Andy Gadiel’s old site there was a quote that goes a bit like this: “The Dead would take you gently by the hand and lead on a wondering journey through mountains and clear springs. Phish is like a locomotive barrelling down the track and you better keep up or get out of the way”. That’s not exactly spot on but it’s close.

I’ve spent many, many years playing the Dead’s music and getting inside Jerry’s head to learn how he did what he did. To do that I had to learn blues, bluegrass, jazz, and a bunch of other stuff – just to get started. Along the way I also developed an passionate love for the music of Frank Zappa. Right here and now – if you don’t like FZ – you will not like Phish.

I get what Phish does and it took a bit. Phish does in the space of 20 seconds what the Dead often took ten minutes to do. The Dead are nearly an intuitive taste. Phish is not quite that accessible.

The major quibbles I have with Phish are the same that I have with Umphrey’s, moe. and a few other notable jam bands. If I could say one thing to all these bands: Hire A Frigging Lyricist! You wanna know why most of these bands – talented, impeccably capable of monster jams and great shows – do not turn the corner into the majors? Few people really take the time to remember pseudo karmic bong hit hippie lyrics rife with arcane inside jokes or codes.

Not every band if blessed to have Robert Hunter or John Barlow for lyricists, ( there’s a rumour moe. has begun working with Hunter ). One reason the Dead ARE “The Dead” is because the SONGS are so wonderful. Ripple? Uncle Johns? Eyes? Attics? Sugar Mag? Weather Report: Suite? Jack Straw? Help-Slip-Frank? To name but a very few?

There are SONGS that the band developed played and developed into jam pieces AFTER they were first SONGS. I love Phish, I really do. Anyone who thinks Reba, Lizards, David Bowie, Mango Song, YEM are anything but epic works of rock music doesn’t get it. That said, my daughter, who loves Phish, maybe said it best: “Dad, ‘Divided Sky’ isn’t a song – it’s six words, repeated once, with a twenty-five minute jam. Great jam. But not a song”. She had me.

Phish arrived at a time a space where the folks who got them were much more into the jams than the actual song-worthiness of their songs. They have some very good songs. Song-wise, “Rift” in probably their strongest effort. Tom Marshall, ( the Phish LYRICIST ), is reported to have written most of the lyrics while going through a very painful divorce. The pain, the soul, the tension of the search for resolution, all come out in the strongest set of songs Phish has offered to date. My two cents – get him back in the game.

For me personally the biggest difference is the scene. Phish shows I’ve been to are NOT a kind scene. I was not made to feel welcome there and the open animosity for Dead Heads “invading” Phish shows was a bit of a shock. Very much an “Our Band – Get Lost!” attitude. THAT vibe does exist in stark and sad contrast to the warm and welcoming scene at Dead show I went to. We long considered it almost a duty to bring a newbie along for the ride – to share what was to us a spiritual journey of music and community. That sense of welcome and community could be embraced by the Phisher Polk and no harm would be done.

But for anyone to suggest that Phish doesn’t jam, they either don’t get it or need some schooling themselves.

First, there was no one like the Grateful Dead or Jerry. End of sentence. New paragraph.

From the little Phish I have listened to, their influence from the Dead is obvious. Phish seems to be competent and fairly tight.

But I've heard far better lead guitar from unknowns on Halsted St. or clubs in Nashville that it's not even close.

Some cats get lucky like Phish has. Some with much more talent don't. That's life.

Back to this performance...

What a rare gem; the "hiatus" Dead in transforming their sound and approach -- again. Each of these 75 performances is worth having.

I dont know alot about Phish. I have one live cd of them playing with BB King and I love that disc. The lead guitar player is trading licks with BB King and it sounds great. That said, the Dead are at such a different level, its not worth a debate. As far as this show, its one of the most enjoyable Aud. shows Ive heard. Sounds great listening to this show on headphones.

The recording is not tops, but is still pretty good. The audience has an exeptional vibe and the set list is bangin`. I`m sucker for SF and Winterland.

Being a dick is all fun and games until someone puts an eye out - but that's pretty funny, too. Good show, ok recording, a little bass-less, which makes me sad.

I feel like they should have kept Keith's original key groove in Franklin's. The album version and some of the out takes (Ace's Studio and Club Front http://www.archive.org/details/gd75-06-05.sbd.hanno.21936.sbeok.shnf) have a very different, gentle lilting groove. I don't think that the guitar conveys the same power and grace.

I myself have a degree in compOsition, and I contend that if you can label Trey's note choice "pedestrian" and mean it, you're a lying sack who doesn't know the first thing about theory. Trey's understanding of intervals and how his solos relate to the underlying chords is unrivaled in modern rock music. Period. Unfortunately, I think he relies too much on that harmonic knowledge and doesn't place proper emphasis on the equally crucial element of melody. That is where Garcia has him beat, and why Garcia will always be the better guitarist. That being said, your claims are the worst combination of pompous and erroneous I've seen in a long time.

Go listen to 12-31-93 Stash and tell me Trey lacks harmonic knowledge. Dude builds tension like a mofo.

No one can or should compare the
"God of Jam band guitars" - Jerry Garcia
to any of his many influenced protege
including John K, Warren H, Jimmy H, many more and Tre which his first show was Hartford 10-14-83, and all of which partied, jammed and hung out many times in GD show parking lots while the real man "Jerry" was entertaining them that night.

For as open minded as one might expect GD fans to be, It seems a lot of people don't like phish. Perhaps the phish fan base has turned people off with the "phish is the greatest" vibe...Phish is an incredibly influential band and they are great at what they do.

To me, their array of compositions is quite intricate and seemingly complex. Some of it has been made into classical music, and sounds great both ways. (specifically the song guyute)... Their flaw is Trey's ego imo. Sometimes he plays too many notes and doesn't allow page and mike the room to breathe. And when the bass and keys are out front, the music is supreme.

While Jerry is also out front all the time, it is never ego driven. Jerry & GD's music is all SOUL. be it in a long jam or 5 minute round & round. Phish has soul, but it is not as pronounced in their music, and I feel it truly comes out during the soft, spacey ambient moments, slave to the traffic light for example...

Regarding the comment that Trey Anastasio is a "more technically proficient guitarist" than Garcia - my God, man what are you smoking?
As a degreed professional musician, I'd have to opine, as politely as I can, that Trey Anastasio is quite possibly the most overrated guitarist I've heard in rock music, period. And it simply isn't his pedestrian choice of notes and his total lack of advanced harmony - something Garcia had a grasp of and was a student of - it's that Anastasio's tone is over-processed, lightweight, and lacking in any definition whatsoever. He has no voice of his own - he just tries to imitate other players.

Thanks to the curators for suggesting this show. Wonderful aud that puts you in Winterland '75. I never expect the overall sound to be perfect; what I enjoy the most from the audience recordings of this era is that they can put you in a time and space that is much more relaxed and friendly compared to the rather mean world we find ourselves in today. It's also refreshing to hear Jerry when he was still really going for it. I'll rate this a 4 star due to the lack of Phil in the mix.

Great sound even though I could barely hear Phil's bass. Keith's keyboard playing is awesome.

All you Phish bashers are fools. Phil Lesh and all the members of Phish are good friends and I seen them play together many times. Phish is way more wacky and weird than the dead will ever be, and the Dead will always be more Americana than Phish.

it seems silly on either end to take something so great and minimalize it just to make something else better. what is created by either of these bands in question is amazing on so many levels. Whether your a phish "phan", a dead fan, or for us smart ones(joking of course) a fan & a "phan", no one should have negative things to say unless somehow one of these bands has actually hurt you on a very personal level which for most of us is impossible. Anyways, great show, great recording, much love to all.

No one is saying that the guys in Phish aren't very talented musicians. We're just trying to point out that their melodies stink and their lyrics sound like they were written by some 13 year-old D & D Dungeon Master. Guelah papyrus? Are you kidding me? Oh, you are kidding me.
Now...on to more important matters. The highlights have been mentioned already...nice Crazy Fingers and a sweet, slow Peggy-O. Rest of the show is a 3.5 for this band, 5 stars for any other band.
Bobby somehow forgets several lyrics to Me & My Uncle (the song is 3 minutes long!), which knocks this version out of my top 150 (out of the 605 times they performed it). Some nice, spacey jamming during the "palindrome" jam. Lots of coughing before "Help on the Way." Otherwise pretty standard fare.

Oh it's spelled Phish. Oh well, the GRATEFUL DEAD IS MUCH BETTER, IMO. Like the poster below said "there would be no phish if it were'nt for the GRATEFUL DEAD. Really did'nt want to fuel fire to this debate. Whatever, after this show think I'll listen to some 73-74 monumental jams, ah beauty. Then anything from 1977. This music is just so good.

The sound: pretty bad. Too light on bass & too harsh on the mid-high level; takes a lot of EQing just to make it listenable.

The music: highly well-played. Not an impressive set list for 1975, otherwise a great show.

The argument: A plague on both your houses. "Go somewhere else & continue your cream puff war!" Phuck off, the lot of you.

Who's better? Who knows. I think that is why people talk about "musical taste". Not everyone likes the same thing ...

I can listen to any Dead show and song live and for free on archive.org. I can't do that with Phish.

I never liked the political and religious ranting of Phish either. I went to a Phish concert in Portland, OR around 1993. They'd jam for a about 2 minutes before stopping and launching into some monologue. I finally got so frustrated, I walked out. Great music and musicians. Just play music and shut up.

Not a bad show here as far as the playing but the recording is a little bouncy.Hmmm... reminds me of a phish song "bouncing around the room".

This is one of six shows from a lively year of Dead-activity with few actual Grateful Dead shows.

Too bad some people can't see how despite Phish being a completely different band from the Dead that they constantly borrowed common covers, treaded on similar psychedelic musical territory, and have a fan base of over-privileged white people.

To hate on the Dead is to hate on Phish.

Phil's first tour back from surgery was Page & Trey. These guys are obviously talented. Phil chose to play with them because of that. So why if Phish and Dead family peacefully have been interacting for 15 or so years must people skwable over who is better or not?

It's like trying to create a rift where one doesn't really exist.

If Bob Weir's vocals suck than Trey's vocals sound like a failed Raffi backup singer.

Just enjoy the music for what its worth. In my neck of the woods, Phish tickets instantly sell out and cost three times face value. It's not worth it to me to hype on a band that hard when I can see Furthur for face or less in smaller venues. Give props to Phish still being a full unit as they started but more props for Phil & Bob who have sacrificed so much to keep touring. Will Trey or Mike still be touring at 70????

Is this really Rob Bertrando's recording? If so, he is the godfather of all tapers. This recording has amazing 3-D stereo and clarity. If anyone wondered what it sounded like to attend a Dead show at Winterland, this is a dynamite recording. Well worth a listen and download. Please check out Bertrando's 8-6-71.

The Phish argument is cracking me up....Here is a quote from a friend of mine, "When you go to a Phish show, the band changes chords and the crowd goes nuts!" So true...

This was a great show. The whole Winterland experience was great. We always paid for Dead shows but sometimes we'd sneak in for other shows. I was 16 at this show and what an impression it made.

The light show was incredible. There was so much Window Pane there. Ahhh, I'll never forget the Bob Fried Memorial Boogie. Kieth & Donna, Diga Rhythm Band, Kingfish, Jerry Garcia & Friends. What I will forget is the performance by The Mirrors who opened the show. Tried to sound like Stoneground in feathered leather halter tops and platform shoes. The ladies were friends with Grace Slick, I hear, and she asked Bill G to help them out.

Again, best light show and one of the best Dead shows ever. But you had to be there to understand.

I'm the LAST person to ever engage in a debate regarding differences of opinions in music, but the ".....this is B.S." comment from "scurrying squirrel" got me so fired-up I have to speak out.....


I gave Phish a chance in the mid-90s, attending 2 shows and listening to a handful of tapes. First of all, in my mid-30s at the time, I felt positively OLD at the shows. Secondly, I admire the Phish kids as musicians, 'cause they're quite talented; heck, they're free to stop by my house if they ever want to learn something about jamming: guitar, fiddle, banjo, bass, drums, keys, I'll play any & all.....bring those Phish youngsters ON.....


I WANTED to like them, but I couldn't and NEVER WILL; some of the jams I've heard are excruciating in their length & execution. Let's face it: they simply DON'T have the SONGS. Who in the heck wants to listen to a jammed-out POORLY-constructed song with a ho-hum melody? I sure as heck don't......


Virtually any of the WORST of the Dead STEAMROLLS the BEST of Phish. Period. This is not simply my opinion.....that's just The Way It Is. It's all about the quality of playing, melody and SONG.

Trey (that is the guy's name, right?) can't hold a candle to Weir as a guitar player/performer, let alone GARCIA. Good Lord, who in their right mind would even THINK such nonsense?!? Again, I say this with all due respect to the little boys in Phish. They have always aspired to follow in the footsteps of the BIG boys......I admire them for that.....


This show may not be the hottest or longest the Dead ever played, but "scurrying squirrel" needs to BURN his or her Phish tape collection and start listening to the Dead on a daily basis.....there's still hope for him or her yet.....


By the way: this tape gets the least airplay around my house of any of the 1975 shows, but it's still a strong, engaging performance. Turn your attention to the "Blues For Allah" suite from Mar23....!!

scurryingsquirl has not a clue as to what he/she is talking about. I cannot even respond to this except to say this is ignorance in its strictest defintion.

Garcia and Weir, along with Hunter and Barlow, wrote some of the greates and most beautiful songs in the history of American music. I don't think anyone will ever remember a Phish tune in 20-30 years they way they will a Stella Blue, Comes a Time, Black Throated Wind or Weather Report Suite (just to name a few). They aren't in the same league and they never will be.

As for fans, I know SOME Deadheads were somewhat annoying, but Phish fans have taken that to whole new level. Most are from well to do families and are out space changing at Haight street. The rating (the lowest) is for Phish, not this show.

First of all, fantastic HOTW through to Franklins, truly beautiful. I'll agree with the reviews on PeggyO as well. All in all this is a pretty damn good show albeit a bit mellow. Sound quality is very nice.
Now, re Phish, you bashers need to chill. Phish and GD are diffeerent bands, different music and a different yet similar scene. Yes, the Phish scene is a bit full of trustafarians and posers but there are very many headz that are in it for the right reasons. DO NOT knock the musicianship of Phish. These guys are trained musicians with many years of experience under their belts. They jam hard and well. IMO they are better than GD in aspects but fall short in others. Phish is standing the test of time and have been around for over 20 years and will likely be around for many more. Just as one mentioned earlier, you can't take Junta (or GD's 1975 tour) and generalize that as the end all be all of Phish (or GD). That is absurd. All of us headz know that you cannot generalize from a studio album or even from an era. Yes late 90's Phish was nearly as phantastic as it gets but the 2009 run was a renaissance and many phisheads know it. Of course there are the critics who need to bash others to feel their worth but I was on the 2009 tour for 12 shows and was thoroughly impressed as were the thousands of others that were just happy to be gettin down again. In conclusion, just enjoy the damn music and don't bash other bands simply beacuse some moron thought that the show was too short and thus beneath his favorite band.
Thanks to all of the Taperz out there that made this site possible! I came up too late to catch GD live (have seen the Dead, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, DSO etc but never a true GD show) and this site has made it possible for me to experience true GD. Love the comments, they can give you the feel for the show when you have those that were at the show to give you details about them...love it...

There was a band called Phish? News to me. Anyway, this is a gem of a show. I am going through the archive starting from 1966 and getting one show from each year.Plus the shows I attended and ones from various important dates in my life.
Poor Phish, I am sure they would jackslap squirrelboy if they saw his remark and were in the same room as him. haha

phish is no contest when you are talking about the dead. All phish are are a bunch of dudes who think they can jam. I mean what is a phish head, obviously nothing that could compare to a die hard dead lover. Phish can just go swim away, as if they disappear they will not be missed, as our beloved dead, we will always miss them- from pigpen to jerry, history was made.

Scurryingsquirl is a total tool. Phish's whole thing could never have happened if it were not for the legacy of the Dead and their innovative style of live performance, including show length. Where do you think they got it from??? Its like people who say Stevie Ray Vaughn is better than Albert King, saying the student is better than the master he got it all from. To pick one show when the Dead are on hiatus and call it weak bacuse its SHORT is in itself weak. And its not even about length. A band could play a five hour show but it could still suck. If its an hour and a half and great playing that is better. Phish has the soul of a vaccum player compared to the Dead and their ability to sustain a long vamp jam owes in large part to the Dead's influence, not to mention that their fanbase draws from the Dead, alot of whom are people who just need to cling onto something and follow a band around. That said, Trey is a great guitar player and worthy of respect.

Sorry this show doesn't work for me. This is my favorite Dead era but the set starts slow, with unfocused low energy.
Pick-ups a little for the HOTW->Slipknot!-FT sequence. Has a nice Blues For Allah.

I'm no Dead basher - just choose another night.

i myself, being 22 missed out on the dead, and did get my fair share of phish, but sorry my friend. there is no comparisson. this is during their hiatus, after the phish hiatus(returning this summer) ive seen 6 of there shwos, all of which were absolute garbage, i loved phish seeing them in 98, 99, when i was young was amazing nwo in 2009, i will never pay a penny to see them again. this dead hiatus show is sicker than sick. not one thign to complain about, the crazy fingers alone is more ripping than the last 6 phish shows ive seen. btw, phish shows run about 3 hours, tops 4. check out some 72 shows bud, topping 4 into the 5 hour easily some, try 69, 50 song shows. phish on their best couldnt top the dead on there worst.. minus the 90s which dont count. because the dead wasnt the dead in the 90s anymore. but my point, phish sucks ass and go phuck yourself. every1 elses reviews, spot on! keep on rockin boys and girls as the music will never stop

Hey Phish man, you must be totally lost in the world of the Dead to try and come to 1975 to look for 5 hour grand stand concerts. Do you know anything about the Dead? 1975 was a hiatus year for the band, people were damn lucky to see them at ALL let alone for an hour and a half set! They were creating killer music around this time and their few concerts of this year were really rehearsals and a way to give their friends a show they were craving. Of course they didn't play long shows, they were out of shape rehearsal wise. Bob Weir said people were going to hear, "the rustiest band on the earth", before one of their FOUR 1975 performances! The Dead were not attempting to set longest jam records at these shows. They had a new sound system and new equipment to get used to after they stopped using the Wall of Sound. Bobby and Jerry were playing new custom made guitars (Ibanez and Travis Bean, Bob switched to Boogie amp)and the whole band needed to get the feel of everything again. I personally am grateful for the beautiful music the band played live this year. Lindley Meadows and Great American Music Hall are up there in my top 20 favorite Dead shows. The live shows of 1975 were creative bursts, they were not well rehearsed, and in this case it was a SURPRISE set! The band wanted to perform their new music that desperately needed to be heard in a live setting! I would never start out here when looking to get into the Dead. Try '68 or '72, don't randomly listen to a '75 AUD and base you decision off that! I tried to listen to Phish, but they don't even come close to the Dead's musical expertise for me. I would rather listen to an old, crusty, reel-to-reel AUD from '70 than hear Junta again! That album SUCKS! If only everyone could understand the Dead, it really is for a select few who have a higher state of musical consciousness.

Now for the real Deadheads out there...THIS SHOW IS GREAT! The sound is a little off but fairly good for an AUD from that era. Crazy Fingers is b-e-a-utiful and this the Help>Slip>Franklin's is amazing. Don't miss out on this rare gem!

For a year with so few shows it sure seems like each one this year is superb.

This show has several of my favorite songs [Crazy Fingers, Deal, Big River, Peggy-O, H>S>F and Blues For Allah] and they are all good renditions. It's '75 so they're kinda laid back and mellow for this show but they still crank out some super jazzy jams even if they're not the long spacey kind some prefer.

I think I'll be adding several songs from this show to my favorite versions list.

The show is enjoyable and the recording is beautiful and clear. Thanks to whoever managed to capture this and shared it with us!

The tracks from this concert are downright incredible. The sound quality is top notch, and these recordings capture the band at a moment of near perfection.

(I only wish I had recorded a few tracks with them myself)

love jg here as well...weir songs fine but not anything really interesting or unique for me. I know this will irritate purists and collectors, of which I am neither, just a fan of great music and not just the dead like some folks...too much else out there that I enjoy as well but I have always had a place for gratefulenss in my soul and an ear for fine musicianship. I took the jerry songs, blues and mags...burned one hell of a very pleasurable snippet of 75 disc, covers it for me...just couldn't take the chance on not having this outrageous take on peggyo, simply stunning. never having seen the boys out west, guess this is as close as i'll ever get to the winterland experience...and just to get it off my mind and say it...not so much on this listing but I wish people would stop posting to this site, moaning and complaining about this and that and how greedy and terrible and selfish so and so is and so forth...the people who dedicated their lives to taping, editing, uploading, going through all the bs red tape and permissions and stuff to bring us this fabulous site and access to history are awesome folks and work for the love of the music and the fans of live music in how much it means to so many folks in our lives...thank you alll...i never knew or will know the oade brothers or other tapers or charlie miller or any band members or robert hunter or j. Aizen or anybody associted with the bands on this site but i'm sure glad others made the effort and they need to know they are appreciated.

It is cool to listen to a great audience recording from this period.Some notable moments, love the Crazy Finger, Peggi-O and the Slipknot!. The Blues for Allah is a must listen and the ending is classic Good Ole GD

This was one of the rare 4 or 5 shows that was the 75 tour.All were fantastic,Kezar and GAMH being the best.This show had specal meaning to the boys in that Bob Fried was a friend.Tanks of nitrous in a sealed closet and lack of oxygen dont go well together,hence,Memorial Boogie,RIP,Bob.......................................

Hey this is Rob Bertrando's Master as transferred by Bob Menke for Rob... Rob edited it and here it is.. Rob did the eq .. Suprised me as Rob is not a fan of post tape edit / eq.. either way grab it its a great source.

Menke and Falanga each pulled this as well from much further up front and it sounds it. Neither circulates ;-) The Menke sounds less 'Winterland-Esque' It is somewhat compressed being those mikes upfront with higher levels... Robs sounds more like what it must have been like to be in Winterland's big box... Vocals are a little bit further back.... They might make a great matrix LOL... I like Rob's a lot for that. Hearing Winterland sometimes is like an affirmation then at other times a nuisance you choose

The eq on this is raised a bit on the high end.. It could be the 152 eq settings for high bias still at 120us and bob playing back at 120us rather than at 70us or what Rob did. I would be interested to know... It does seam Dolby decoded I think...

Both are great.... Look for Bob's some time in the future...

It is a killer show and for me 75 is so important in the bands history and sound.. There is an excitement in the music with new direction that I think recharged them... I am a real big fan of 75 :-)

This show is essential, alot of technical artistry in the real provocative compositions like "stronger than dirt" and "slipknot". Sound is good to my ears like jerrys voice in franklins real clear and focused. This music is alot of fun, this is an awesome tape with alot of highlights and rare quality's to it its really one of a kind in a sense because of what a departure this set is from that standard they had built up to in the wall of sound days. If you like Jerry Garcia then this one is a classic this is him still reaching for that next level this was that kind of coalescence where the drugs or band dynamics or whatever it was that drove that thing forward were all properly proportioned to give you a really great final product which was the greatest fucking band in the history of the world. Beautiful technically proficient music, great show.

The year 1975 is often overlooked due to the bands rare concerts during their sabbatical from touring. That is too bad and if you havn't heard every show from this fantastic year you are missing out.
This benefit for poster artist Bob Fried is an excellent example of the bands style and new sound. If nothing else at least check out the special version of Peggy-O from this excellent audience recording. It is like no other recorded version. Jerry takes his time and really adds alot of pathos to the words and pulls out a beautiful and stirring guitar solo.
Other highlights are a wordless Help On The Way, a marvelous Crazy Fingers and an extra spacey Blues For Allah. A great show from a great and under-rated year.
