nail it tonight. Fantastic setlist to begin with. First part of the first set is very decent, but "Looks Like Rain" and afterward is EXTREMELY good. Lazy Lightning is solid as usual, with a short but sweet Supplication jam wrapping up the first set. Samson and Good Lovin' are a nice, but unremarkable opener to a second set that becomes nothing short of amazing afterward. Very good Estimated Prophet with fantastic, jazzy jamming that really flows nicely through Drums into a full-on brutal Other One. Heavy-duty stuff, make no mistake. Phil is all over this, as well as the drummers. Truckin' is just as good as the version from 01-06-1978 which is no small compliment. Great stuff. Wrapping thing up, an average Sugar Magnolia leads into one of the best Johnny B. Goode's I've ever heard this band so. Ferocious is an understatement. Insanely good. Recording has a bit of a hiss, which I noticed much more on my stereo than I did in my car and one headphones, but the star that the recording quality would have lost gets put back due to the sheer energy of the night and brilliance of the performance. Keith being so prominent in the mix is a welcome surprise, too.

the second CD has been stuck in my player for quite a while, they really take off during the Estimated, a really fine version, through drums into a 15 minute plus Other One, then into a rocking Truckin' and closing with an over-the-top Sugar Magnolia. All band members are really on (even Donna), with Jerry, Bobby and Phil at their most spectacular, but Keith's playing is also pretty hot. The tape hiss is actually quite tolerable (especially as the music is so fine). 5 stars out of 5.

is dropping bombs all over the Other One. It's too bad that there is a major audience patch in the middle of the Other One. His bass must have been in tatters after this show. The hiss is not as bad as others have written about here. There are obviously a few cassette generations in the lineage. But hey, what are you going to do? A little hiss is the price you pay to hear Phil in all his glory from this era.

we played was like this we'd live here". But obviously they had fun, despite Jerry's continuing illness! Perhaps, because they apparently hadn't ever before played on Bill Graham's Birthday? Almost any show at the Golden Hall was good, yet I missed the night before but I saw all the other shows there except for 1970. Despite Jerry's laryngitis he sure made up for it on his 'Wolf" guitar and Phil had the bass with the 10 buttons! It was kind of short because it was only Bob tunes but it was smokin'! Incidentally, Bill Graham apparently hated that name "Uncle Bobo" but it stuck for a while anyway! (By the way, please see my review of 1993/1/24 for an explanation about playing in January which was rare and after this almost never)! Augy San Diego

All Bobby show #2
For some, the prospect of an all Weir song show is less than appetizing. This one proves them wrong. While the usual Weir fare is fully represented, it's

not the song choice but the performance that counts here. Weir really steps up to the plate for these two shows, but the band itself is not far behind. Super high energy throughout, some songs rock so hard you'll wonder what the band took and where you can get some. Highlights? The whole show is great...and while later on in years the Dead played energy without the extended jams, this show has both. They go to some pretty interesting places in Estimated...You can tell they like the crowd too. "If every place we played was like this, we'd live here!" I like this recording better than the night before. This board is - well mixed balanced and clean, while the 7th's soundboard is a bit muddy and bass heavy for my liking. For those who don't know, this is the show were they give Bill Graham the name 'Uncle Bobo.' Hear them do it and sing happy birthday.
