Not sure why it took me so long to listen to this absolutely wonderful 1977 masterpiece, but I finally made it and once again am grateful for This Day in History. In any case, best Comes A Time I’ve ever heard, simply sublime, the segue out into Playin Reprise is a top shelf mind melter....10 stars for that alone!

moved down from the loge after set one, my second dose kicked in and they just destroyed me. this set was all about phil just lighting it up and jerry tearing my heart to pieces. the dancin' had the place just freaking and then a seemingly bizaree into what was a flat out fantasitic BEW. phil went somewhere (alcapulco, bobby says?), my orange barrel kicks in full force to the polka and then it's just the phil and jerry show. the playin' is righteous, the first other one of tour, although short, is powerful and phil is shredding until jerry just melts my face and my heart with the most precious comes a time (ever?) that ever so sweetly brings home the playin' reprise. the set ends and i'm awestruck and paralyzed. i can't move. literally. and then the encore comes, brokedown bust out. the place is freaked to the gills and again jerry just slays it. his vocals are mesmorizing, and i'm born again only to lie down by the river...the ushers have to help me out of the venue. i don't even remember what the hell i did afterwards. don't care. i'm on tour now, for sure.

In my search for the best version of....
"Comes A Time" for me at least, (This is it ~_~)
Some of Jerry's most emotionally mastered
guitar work!
My biggest regret as a dead head is, I didn't
get to see this show, or maybe it's ;I didn't get
to see every show.
I am grateful for the shows I did see,
and "of corse" the Music*~*.*
May the music live on!

Very nice transition. I was listening on the couch without any reference to the set list. I was way into the Other One (not my favorite song but, happened to be pretty focused) and as it began to decompose I wondered, what's up next? Could it be Warf Rat? Nope. Comes A Time.
Sweet sounds with nice accenting from Donna. It seemed like a very heart-felt rendition by Jerry. Crystal clear and gave me goose bumps.

Subject: Kinda overrated
Subject: Kinda overrated
This is a good set with fantastic sound quality but it's mellow and doesn't have that extra thing that other second sets from this month do. The ballads are the best part. The first go-round of Playin goes nowhere. The Other One is decent enough but is nowhere over the top. Maybe one to listen to around your non-head friends if you don't want to flip them out with something with more muscle and smoke.

All the songs played on this sweet one-disc second set are outstanding, as is the sound quality. But "The Other One" > "Comes A Time" > "Playin' Reprise" sequence is showcase Dead. "The Other One" is compact but powerful with tasy jamming, and the segue into "Comes A Time" is musical telepathy . The jam at the end of "Comes A Time" is creative and fluid and oh-so-gradually weaves its way back into that familiar "Playin" motif. Very enjoyable listening!
And the "Brokedown Palace" is so beautiful and well-played that I don't even mind the last line being cut.
Get this short but sweet one-disc download!

For the cut at the end of Brokedown, grab the song from the Cassette AUD version and just splice in the last few seconds using your favorite WAV editor. As an added bonus, you get to hear the crowd send the boys off...
As for the rest of the set, I love both the quality (typical Sept 77 'round sound') and the performance.

First off, the sound quality of this show is top notch, at the top of the '77 sbd's. Second, the playing is just unreal. At around the 4 minute mark in "Playin in the Band", everything just starts floating. Sureal, and enchanting.
Dancin' , the Other One, Comes a Time, this one has it all. If only the Brokedown Palace wasnt cut, and the first set circulated too. Oh well, you cant ask for it all. This show is a true enjoyment, and the only 5 star rating I have ever given on archive.org.

This is a great single disc show - fun to listen to from top to bottom. Comes a Time caught my ear the most, though. Give it a listen with the levels turned up!

And the Dead kick it off with this outstanding show. Lots of great shows in this year and in this month but don't overlook this cooker!
The last reviewer asked about a cut at the end of Brokedown Palace and I can confirm that the song does (regretably) end abruptly at the repeat of "Listen to the river sing sweet _______"...Dang!
If you're looking to fill an 80 minute CD, I can recommend The Music Never Stopped from May 5th.
Thanks Archive!!

This show has a great mix, great sound quality, and very clear.
They were definately on that night during Brokedown Palace.
Does Brokedown Palace cut off for anyone else about 10-20 seconds before they finish?

absolutely stellar set...
Super funky Dancin', with some fantastic jamming....very smooth transition into BE Women...Playin' is great, and the the Other One is amazing...Comes a Time is as magnificent as any May '77 version, and Brokedown is perfect...
In fact, this whole set is perfect.

If there is a more tender and poignant 1977 Brokedown on record, please let me know. The tempo is perfect. Moving a song forward at this slow pace is a great piece of work by the drummers. Wonderful fills on piano, and what sounds like an organ. Garcia's singing is among his most inventive: "guh-NUH-plant; a WEEEE-EEEP-in willow." His solo is perfect.

Sounds great (from what I can tell from streaming audio over crappy computer speakers) Nice stereo separation of the instruments.

This is an incredible CD to have, just because of the intense density of goodness that gets packed into this one set--and it fits on one 80 min. CDR! The Dancin' is really hopping, connected to BEW, it really starts to work. The Playing in the Band is so soupy and drippy that the songs played between the intro and reprise seem to just be lost in a sea of Playin', its some dope shit...one of those jams that really get you lost until its over!

Subject: An Amazing Set From An Amazing Time.
The is one of the nicest second sets from this era. The playing is fantastic, and the sound quality of this recording is crystal clear. There is one major problem, and that is that the final line of Brokedown Palace cuts when Jerry sings "Listen to the river sing sweet/" Everything else is so good that it is difficult to complain, but when you hear, I mean don't hear it you too will feel like you've been slapped in the ear. It absolutely is worth the download. This is a six star recording, but it gets 5 because of the ommission.
