1st cal dead show
I was 18 and flew out to California from chicago to see these shows. What a trip. I remember playing football of all things with these crazy hippys in

front of the kaiser. Right before the dead came on, a joint made it's way past my friend Terry and I. We puffed of course. Then found out it was laced with dust. Jack Straw started and when it got to the part, my ole buddy you're moving much too slow, it felt like I was in slow motion. We recovered and had a great time. Bobby went nuts and climbed the speaker tower. Good show but the next night was better. No more dust for me thanks! When I flew home, I was much more popular, hmmmm.

Blob Weird
My friend Robert had told me of this cheesy Weir moment in Oakland, I never knew if he was embellishing the story but it sounds like he was most definitely

not---too bad there is no video footage or even just a still shot of this one. I am sure Jerry's smirk was priceless as Bobby did his thing. I would do anything to see this Sugar Mag with my own eyes....what a treat to catch this show.

Bobby climbs the Speaker Tower
Great video effects that night. Swirling psychadelia and Max Fliescher. Great stuff. Booby had a lot of weird moments this year to say the least. Only

Sammy Haggar was out cheesing him. Not a good year for Dead concerts, Jerry didnt seem very into it on many occassions. This night was different though and they played very well and just about erased the memory of the Boreal Ridge show. So why did Bobby climb into the speaker tower? Jerry and Phil turn towards the drummers and end the song early leaving Bobby stuck up there. He was pissed. A good show never the less.

High Time!
The '80's (for better or worse) was the decade I was seeing Dead shows. I only made it to 12-15 shows, but this one holds a special place for me. I always
...
seemed to miss the shows where special nuggets like "St. Stephen" were pulled out. On this particular night, we got a special treat in the first set in the form of "High Time". The crowd was clearly grateful to be hearing a less "standard" song, and the vibe was religious. The band took it slow and stoned, and Jerry sounded like an old man, but it was pure magic. While the "Terrapin" is solid, the rest of the show was a B+ example of mid-'80s Dead. If you were there, download the whole show for sentimental reasons. If not, at least download "High Time", because it was (a high time, that is).

Kaiser Frystir
It was the first night of three special evenings. I recall the Terrapin as being spectacular with a good jam at the end into Don't need love. There was

a special little Jerry jam before drums too. This was the night Bobby climbed the speaker scaffold during the SSDD part of Sugar Magnolia with Harry Popick spotting him-crazy energy!!!
