I think it's pretty interesting how they try on a song like Day Tripper, play it a handful of times and then decide that it does nothing for them. In this

particular instance there really isn't much room to grow beyond the basic theme, so why bother?

and the show is full of wonderful moments. This show is NOT lifeless. Scrappy, but definitely has some great playing.
This is vocally, one of the worst performances I've heard from the Dead. We all know about Jerry's voice/health problems at this stage, but on this night
...
Bobby's voice is even worse. He obviously is sick and probably shouldn't be singing. Cold Rain and Snow stars the show off with good energy but one of the worst performances in the history of the band follows. During Day Tripper Bobby's voice is absolutely atrocious and is cracking and croaking the entire song. Musically this performance is awful and vocally it is even worse. It is very difficult to even get through. Absolutely horrid! Fortunately, a mellow West L.A. Fadeaway improves things. This version is very laid back but I love it. Bob's voice is slightly improved for the cowboy duo of Mama Tried>Big River but not by much. The jam in Big River is at least energetic and enthusiastic. The rest of the set is lackluster and pretty boring. The second set is a vast improvement ans starts off with a very nice, long and jammed out Scarlet>Fire. This is the highlight of the evening. Some vocals flubs but the playing is intense with fiery leads by Garcia and interesting group improvisation. The Playin' that comes next is interesting because the lyric section is mercifully but short and quickly dissolves into a long spacey jam. Decent but it doesn't really go anywhere too interesting. Post Space is a bit anticlimactic with a standard version of the Wheel followed by a long Black Peter. For some unknown reason, with all of Bob's vocal troubles, they decide to end the show with an eleven minute Lovelight including a lengthy rap. The playing is passionate but Bob sounds like death. They should have gone with something else or closed it out with a Jerry tune. This avoids one star because of the Scarlet>Fire.

Not so good
Jerry's voice may be a little ragged but it's nothing compared to Bobby's rusty frog gargle. I guess the show must go on eh? But they should have taken

this night off if they were that sick. The playing isn't terrible but nothing too inspired happens. It's obvious they weren't feeling well and weren't focused. Jerry has some nice runs in Playing and Scarlett but the drummers bring most of the procedings way down to planet Boring with their indifferent thud/wack pokey playing. They take it up a notch for the encore, but it's too little too late. There's no magic and no reason to listen to this show.

Yeah, the vocals on Day Tripper were painful, but so were most of the infrequent covers Ive heard them do here and there (Satisfaction and Baba ORiley
...
come to mind). In spite of Bobbys voice being shot, great mix and sound quality very crisp. First set is mellow. Second set definitely makes up for deficiencies in the first. This is one of those shows that takes you back...Thanks.

OOOFAAAH!
If you can sit through this show you are too stoned to move to click it off. Day Tripper is a Train Wreck. West LA - wake me when it's over... oh it is?
...
Someone woke the band... it's mama tried. It was a good try boys. Big river keeps moving - not bad I guess. T.Jed - goes no where. I'm not going to go through the rest but move on to some shows from 78 or 87-88-89

I dont get the gripe. This is smooth and deep, a work of art. Very laidback but purposeful. Everyone is exploring the music. The second set is full

Jerry were fine. However, was energy level down for the boys, yes, but then again we just called it layed back "west coast style" of which Dead had a tendacy to do till the end.

Not only are Jerry's vocals of the "drugged-up" type (I think we all know what that sounds like), but take a listen to Weir's voice. EVEN WORSE! Ouch,

Excellent Sound, Good performance
Well balanced mix, excellent sound overall, pretty good show, not great, some might argue going through the motions somewhat, but basically a winner.

intro is one of the hottest of this year. Great Fire, too. A nice night and a typical hot set list for the tour. I am close to giving this 5 stars, which I could do for sound quality but the show just does not make it to that status level. That being said it is a great download and I have listened to every note thus far. Check out the 9.5 minute West LA and day Tripper, nto to mention the cold rain...I cranked this on the way to work today. You will too once you hear it. bravo boys bravo!!!

In listening to this awesome sbd I note that it is really Bobby that is having vocal issues. Sounds to me as if he has a cold or something to that affect.

The sound quality otherwise is top notch and is a welcome addition to my shn archive. I do remember this was the year Jerry's voice started failing a bit but remember it being in the summer tour. But I could be wrong.
