I was listening to this and before I read the other reviewer's comment about a "second rate Jim Morrison impression" I had exactly the same thought.

I don't think it was Jim Morrison, I mean that would have really been historic. But he was reminiscent of the Lizard King.

And I don't think it was just some random stranger.. the person isn't a very good singer but he obviously is practiced in wailing the blues. Who knows.

even if we never know who it was I think it's awesome that they just let some person come up on the mic and start wailing his heart out.

That's real raw primal Dead stuff there!!! Love it.

When the guy comes up and starts vamping about everybody standing up he sounds to me a little like Burton Cummings of The Guess Who. But I can’t believe Cummings could ever be so painfully bad. I would’ve given this three stars if not for the classic acoustic set tossed in.

Super cool me and my uncle love the acoustic it’s a shame they didn’t do this more especially in the 90’s when Bobby would sometimes bust out the acoustic as the band stayed electric

Comparing the three differant recordings of this show, the most obvious difference is the reviewers' theories as to the identity of a guest singer (Elvin Bishop or a Southern California musician -- who later makes ihis own post, asserting he never went to AZ in 1970 to the AUD member whose review is pasted just below), Paul Butterfield on harminica, or just another AUD member, to te two and then 50 AUD members who got up on stagr with the band.

I loved all the songs. Jerry's voice is so sweet and musical. Bob is crystal clear. The drums are tight. The while evening was a very good time for me to listen to three times.

This recording is very listenable and discussed enough by the other comments that I have little to add.
I am adding my two cents to thank the Live Music Archive,the the Bands and Tapers, uploaders and everyone involved. This site is such a vast resource I could(already have :) ) spend years within its hypnotic collection.

Secondly, I hope the situation for Jennifer Ryan turned out okay. I obviously don't know a thing about the woman or how old she was at the show,but I can't imagine the size of the instant panic/anxiety attack I would have hearing that message announced during a Dead show.
Then the walk to find the pay phone or some desk? Coherently talking my way through the calling collect process in the sate of mind I would have been in at GD shows would have been nearly impossible. That was between the ages of 15-25, I Stopped when Ole Jerry kicked.
Given the time frame close family member she could have had a close family member at war. Just like many of us do today.
If only the planet could coexist like so many of us do in the Dead community. Nearly 44 years after this show and where nowhere near the global peaceful state people must have imagined the 2000's would bring.

The kid that jumped on stage during Pigpen's acoustic set was just that. He's was(then) a local Washington high school kid named Paul Michael Cantrell.

We can let the Wasted Rambler off the hook for the mediocre harmonica playing - listen during NFA as the harmonica starts up and you can hear him still shouting in the background. So they're two different people.

Surprised no one has mentioned the second-rate Jim Morrison impression the guy's doing. This is what narcissism sounds like when it's jacked up on a megadose of psychedelics.

As a historical document this is interesting. But with so much else to choose from I don't reckon I'll be returning to this show anytime soon, despite the nice sound quality of Mr. Miller's version.

The show the night before this was _outstanding_. It's a crummy AUD but slap some EQ on it and it'll stand your hair on end.

At the end of Dire Wolf, Bobby complains that the rotating stage makes it hard to get to know anyone in the audience. After Ceballos's evil twin joins the band, I'm sure Bob wishes it had remained impossible.... Actually, there are multiple nutters on stage by the end of Lovelight -- at least two vocalists and someone with a harmonica.

A high point for me is the fine version of Hard to Handle, as in most of the shows at this time.

Now that you "reviewers" are all grown up, maybe a retraction of your IDIOTIC statements defaming my good name are in order? I thought so...

ah man am i glad the SBD controllers decided to eventually turn down cebollas on NFA (but he does come back). the SOB comes in on the verse when the boys are trying to take off...not cool. his voice isn't bad but he really goes too far with the bantering and yelling. his style of trying to get the crowd involved kind of reminds me of what hiphop people try to do these days-->its quite annoying and downright unnecessary. damn them. his harping really isn't that great either. would much rather pig was on it.
all in all, a great show though. really can't complain about the sound or the selection.
gotta love the long transition into LL
i really enjoy how the boys deal w/ cebollas...they show great composure, skill, and damn...they just rule the evening

For me the highlight is definitely the BP. Just exquisite, acoustic with a mellow electric (!) solo from Jer, whose voice is heart-breakingly passionate. MUST be heard by anyone who treasures the 2/13-14/70 BPs. A truly great performance.

(p.s. the 'Impromptu Blues' is one of the worst things ever.)

I don't know which is more appropriate. The playing is really hot, but this knucklehead joins in and ruins it...well almost. I found myself laughing at it halfway through NFA. Hey, considering how many shows these guys played over the years, it's surprising this didn't happen more often, given the strange mellons(I'll include myself) they used to attract. I'm not sure how to recommend this one. Give it 4 stars for sound/perf. with a big warning label.

Nice acoustic and the NFA>lovelight is for the ages.

I was at this show. The guy was just a member of the audience (dressed in a long overcoat), who got on stage and started singing. The group backed him up. Later, by the time the band did "Lovelight" there were maybe 50 members of the audience on stage with the band. The Star Theatre had a round revolving stage (now called Celebrity Theatre). The band members were surrounded by crazed audience members (me included). The theatre's still there, at 32nd St. and Van Buren in Phoenix. I saw Bob Weir's band (Ratdog) there a couple years ago during a visit. I also saw Cream there, among many others. This show by the Dead was the best, though. My first Dead show, as a matter of fact.

That would be the one and only Wayne "The Harp" Ceballos, whose vocal "contributions" were somewhat common during this era (see 8/23/69). I don't mind him overly much because most of the shows he was involved in were hot shit. I think this show is a prime example of that.

PS ÃÂ if Wayne really bugs you, don't go near 8/23/69. You'll be getting a double dose: Ceballos AND Charles Lloyd.

funny how an incident like this makes you remember the dead weren't from another galaxy -- they let this guy on stage????...this dude needs to be strangled ......ALMOST ruined the performance

Whoever this guy was, i've never heard such a wacky person on stage with this band before. I'm not sure he would want his name known either as he sounded quite wasted and it became more comedic than musical at times. It's kind of like Bill Murray on peyote right off the range; he actually sounded alright during his blues impromtu forming unintentionally off the Katie Mae as he got the crowd riled up well and the band went along. But his contribution to the Not Fade Away was embarrassingly bad. It was like listening to a concert right next to a drunk loud idiot. The unknown vocalist's harp playing was amateur to say the least. He got the clue and scaled back his presence greatly during the Lovelight, at least until the tapecut....another great mystery in life. Pretty good sound quality despite some volume fluctuations sometimes caused by The unknown vocalist's very loud vocals. Could The unknown vocalist also of become the 70's-fad The unknown comic? This certainly could of been his start. Did Mickey have a gong that night? BTW, The Star Theater is suppose to be in Scottsdale, AZ even though The unknown vocalist might disagree.
