A real nice one.
This is a solid offering. The performance quality ebbs and flows throughout. The Bertha > GSET > Jack-A-Roe sequence cooks, but Wang Dang Doodle

and Loose Lucy are more pedestrian. Then things climb up again for a marvelous Queen Jane and Lazy River Road, and so on and so forth. Overall, the good stuff far outweighs the average stuff. Amid the peaks and valleys of this Sacramento gig, Eyes of the World stands proudly at the top summit as the incredible show highlight. Space is quite dramatic, with what sounds like a beautiful clanging bell steadily waning in pitch against a static veil of computerized insects. Big Ben clanging out high noon on acid. Post-Space is tame, but righteous. Who doesn't love The Wheel out of Space, along with a Rain encore? This seems like a great run of shows to have seen live. Can't wait to check out nights 2 and 3 down the road!

Never Had Such A Good Time!
I was in a place of disillusionment with the Dead when I went to this run. I had been going to see JGB at the Warfield that winter/spring and those shows

Smoked. However the last few Dead shows I'd seen were... tepid, at best. It was my buddy's birthday and we had tickets so I said "what the hell" and went. Boy - am I glad I did! I had seen JGB and the Allman Bros @ CalExpo in the summer of '92, and was glad to go back to what I called 'the backyard' - because that's what it felt like compared to the giant stadiums etc. The weather was *perfect* on this day, I remember thinking "there's no way they can't be awesome today" and it was apparent from the opening strums of Bertha that we were in for a heater! This run of shows has a very special place in my heart, too much to get into but between the music, the vibe and some of the things that happened over the course of the run personally it just makes me grin from ear to ear.

Another Cal Expo Run
We knew at this time that the end was near for the Cal Expo Amphitheater. So the chance to do 3 more days with the Dead could not be passed up. For all

the 1993 shows I did these rank well up there. With a Bertha opener the dancing began. There was also a Loose Lucy and a Lazy River Road -smiles all around. The rest of the run was just fun and frivolity all around. Just look at the set lists. Cal Expo was a great venue for the Dead and it did close up the next year with one more appearance by the boys.

Oh yeah.
I did a 13 show run this tour or something close to that. I thought GD were on point this year. Cal Expo was one of the coolest places to see them.

Love the beer garden. Went there the next year too for the closing of the venue. Great memories.

a regretful incident
I recall this show.. it was a bit of a drag on a personal level. Our group were out in the concourse near the snacks vending area when the band broke

into GDTRFB.. and being one of my favorite songs at the time.. I started hotfooting it towards the tunnel into the field... I think I was kinda skipping/running as I went through a crowd of spinners... We all were totally in the vibe..successfully dodged my way through them with a Gene Kelly grace...until, seeing the open space beyond, I got to the last spinner in the group. I saw this poor guy twist toward the right, so I went left, but he did a double pivot and came around flatfooted to the left, and I crashed into him full force.. He was 5'10" 185# at the max.. I'm 6'6" 270# accelerating into a full run.. I impacted him like a linebacker catching a QB straight up.. just blew him out of his birkenstocks. I stopped and helped him to his feet, apologizing profusely, but I could tell by the look in his still rattling eyeballs, that I'd ruined his night.. He couldn't stand and was sitting back down, when I, with one last "sorry" went back to my headlong plunge toward the now bouncing & crowded field. I've always felt really bad about that.. it was a total accident, but still. Life on the Tour can be hazardous. Great recording of a standard fare '93 Spring show. Cal Expo was my favorite of all places to see the band.. To me Shoreline is like home, but Cal Expo was like the "back 40".. the private intimate place, just for the few of us. Which, I guess is something, considering I've always lived in So Cal.

Excellent start to a great three show run!
Solid Bertha and Jerry plays a wah on Greatest Story rather than the mutron (but is low in the mix). Eyes is stellar and simply goes on and on and on.

Second set in general is above average (esp. pre drums)...
