many other ppl are seemingly outright bewildered by the band's general approach during this year. How can we distill all this into a rating in the 1- to 5-stars system? I would contend that we can't. I'm not even giving this one a rating, just going to write about it for a moment. Before we get to the actual show, a few words about this source: Great sound, recording is perfectly on pitch, and another good example of why 1988 is so maddening: Most of the shows have an excellent ultramatrix recording in circulation, but many of the shows are lackluster or dull in some way. 1988 was a year that, like 1980, didn't often bring the band into extended explorations. Jerry was on again, off again. His guitar playing was generally solid, but not necessarily inspired. Bobby was beginning to use MIDI sounds (an example can be heard here during 'crazy fingers') Listening to these shows in order after listening through the fall tour, which ended with a very long and not terribly exciting run at MSG, one gets the sense that the band was happy to be close to home for a change, and they must have enjoyed the opportunity to play on a nice big outdoor stage at Shoreline. For whatever reason, by the second set of night three, they were super chill. There are two extended segments of spacey tuning. Eventually during the second one, Jerry seems to stumble upon "Estimated", and even then, it takes a while for Bobby to start the song. By the time it starts, it's very loose. The tempo is slower than usual. Phil veers into 1977 territory with his basslines during the intro and verses. Bobby does more than his usual 1988 strumming while he sings (listen closely for his more elaborate guitar parts, which often simply didn't happen in this song by 1988). By halfway through "Eyes", the offbeat chill energy is all finally depleted, and the rest of the show is very standard 1988 2nd-half-of-2nd-set fare, nothing essential for the average half-interested listener. Next up: a run back to the east coast for some mid- to late-October shows. Will they be as mellow as these three?

you. This is a nice show, not spectacular, but I guess some people expect every show to be spectacular and if it is not, it must be awful. I am not one of those people. I like music, not looking through the thesaurus and artlessly crafting nonsensical reviews of shows I barely listen to.

time to be some self-appointed, bastardized version of Roger Ebert over and over and over and over in the midst of this OASIS of musical expression!!! You so totally mis-represent the casual nature and context of the Dead community at large, you lil' nit-picker, Jboy!!! October @ Shoreline---I can feel that Fall breeze a blowin' as I type. Gone are the days---Damn!!!! Memphis Blues is top-notch as is To Lay me Down in the first set. Great show.

treat and the Fingers and Stella are just great. I hate to put bad vibes on this site but jboy, your badmouth reviews are everywhere and 90% of them are laughably inaccurate. I wrote a lot more about this but deleted it out of compassion. Spare us, please. 5 stars is a perfect show and recording. 4 is a great show and I can't quite put this at that level. I'd give it a 7 out of 10, and that means 3 stars, which seems low - but there you go.

that night, imo, building up to a beautiful Stella Blue which left a friend and me shaking our heads in speechless disbelief all the way to my truck. For some reason, I never expected much from sunday shows. Many times attendence would be down that night, with many folks hitting it hard on friday and saturday. But I remember that Sunday as being exceptional. jboy: I don't think recovering bulimics should read your show reviews, as just seeing your posts make me want to puke. But the other day it all made sense when I read a couple reviews where you favorably compared DSO with the Dead. WAM... lw

Frankly, you could skip this whole run and Not be the worse for it.
1st Set: A bland "Cold Rain" opens up the final chance for the band to come through for their hometown peeps. The 'bayside fillies' in "Minglewood" are

looking good. Bobby almost forgets they're in 'Mountain View' the second time around. A fast-moving perf that doesn't cut all that deep. Jerry's tender melliflous notes throughout "Peggy" are exemplary. "Memphis Blues" touches an emotional core but it's not an all-time favorite. The direct, no-frill/embellishment take on "To Lay Me" makes it all the more poignant. It's Phil time with a little "Box" to ease your pain because she won't lay down with you.. :( It's acceptable which leads into a casually enjoyable "Deal" that closes out this set. 2nd Set: ooooo...99 seconds of "Spacey Tuning" lead us into a massaging "Crazy." It's the sort of delicate version that feels best when your paramour is slightly cascading your soft skin with her fingernails. "Samson" is active and brisk enough to satiate that bluesy slinking desire. Oddly a minor four minute swirl of mood-inducing "Space" allows for a lovely segue to a nicely placed "Estimated." It pokes, prods and brays with the usual gusto seging into yet another wobbly "Eyes." Of course Jerry can string notes better than most so some of his lyrical comments are effective, but the song never feels wholly cohesive. "Drums" & "Space" are filled with the usual wacky warblings - the latter of which is awash in the usual synth flourishes. "Gimme" is performed with an average amount of gusto. "Stella" is no better than standard though Jerry attempts to wring out every last possible note. "Throwing" is average but clear-headed leading to a slightly more energetic "NFA" closer. Our disappointing three night stand ends with a run of the mill "Black Muddy." 2 3/4 stars rounded up out of pity for S Franciscans.
