Subject: Great, free-flowing show. High-powered Jerry- No boring 80's stuff here
Subject: Great, free-flowing show. High-powered Jerry- No boring 80's stuff here
This show is a perfect demonstration of how Jerry could take a plain, tired set and make it something magical and beautiful. The songs here are all 80's
...
and 70's standards, yet the energy and mindset Jerry was in this night makes everything new and refreshing. How many times have we heard an estimated > eyes or rooster > brown-eyed? How about US Blues? Normally I would skip a show that looks like this, just because I've heard this formula over and over again- and especially in the 80's- this is usually not a stand-out-type show.
-HOWEVER- This show is not like that, it's a must listen for that x-factor, that special feeling- I dont really need to explain it- that comes with a good Jerry performance. This show is purely that- Jerry and the boys take a tired setlist and make magic out of it. Audible beauty.
The brown-eyed women alone deserves this show to be a good listen, but numerous high spots as well. The Dancing harkens back to those amazing, beautiful and spiritual days in Golden Gate park in the 60's. Let it grow and the scarlet/fire are at their peak, very free and spirited. The AUD US Blues offers a glimpse into the encore the crowd heard, not what the board heard.
The other that makes this show great is the constant great AUD feel, with great sound at the same time. I would say this show sounds like it was recorded in the middle of the FOC, close to the stage but surrounded with enough people to hear the reactions. Very cool stuff. This is a very listenable, cool AUD from the 80's with a spirited set. This is one to pick up.

vg show and vg recording. A bit of the 84 junkie stuff but not too much, and some amazing high moments, really driving and soaring.

This show is not 100% gold, but it has a good variety of delights.
Dire Wolf is decent, as always. But Tennessee Jed really kicks ass--Jerry's gravelly ... voice really adds a bluesy feel. There is an excellent solo at the end too.
For me, the Let it Grow really stands out. J.G. pulls out all the stops, and Brent is just behind him. The velocity of Jerry's notes astounds and amazes. The transitions between sweet and gentle parts, and then the furious and powerful sections, are glorious to behold. Check it out.
Scarlet is played very fast, with increasing bounciness and organization as you get into the meat of the jam.
You will not believe this Fire. It's fairly straightforward, but just perfect in terms of Jerry's playing as well as the keyboards and the drumming work. Each jam feels perfectly orchestrated. There is not one not which is out of place or not doing any work towards the composition of the whole song. 12 minutes of continuous beautiful improv.
Sugar Magnolia is above average.
Estimated Prophet is above average.
The U.S. Blues encore is well done, played with a sense of energy and fun, which is rare for this tired tune.
A great show all around. Only thing lacking is Cassidy--the vocals seem a little forced somehow.
