Best show of that fall tour...
Though I know Garcia didn't think the band played well on this tour, it sure was fun for those of us who were lucky to be there. This, in my opinion,
...
was the best one of the tour, though I may be biased by having somehow stumbled onto the floor, direct center well in front of the SBD for the whole show. Jaw-dropping kooky rich full sound. I ran into some of the Nevilles about a month later, in a 7-11 in Northampton, MA (Hi Nicole!)after they played a show, and asked why they didn't come out until the encores, and why with the Bangles (!!). They said security didn't believe they were the Nevilles, and wouldn't let them in the back door. Finally got in, and joined the fun. GREAT show.

(Y'see in N.O. you 'boogie') The '80 pair of shows each went from 8:20 to 1 a.m what with the acoustic set and two breaks. Then came the 1982 show. Originally set for 2 nights, the appearence was announced on the GD hotline at 12:01 a.m. one morning..the only announcement made. Seats went to those lucky few who happened to call the hotline that morning & haul ass downtown, for tickets went on sale exclusively at the Saenger box office at 8 a.m. that morning. Of course Howard T. Duck & i copped our limit at all 4 ticket windows. The gig was great, Pee Wee, action PACKED. Soundboard of this one is a gotta get.

Home---pre Drums, boys, pre-Drums!!!!) You can bounce a quarter off this mix. Bright and jumpy like a handful of dexies. Here we go! Yes! A perfect example of the band in '88 blithely on their way to the 89-90 climax. No stopping this train! The fifth star is for Dan Healy.

Sorry for the crassness, but I expected more of a personality to a show originating in New Orleans.

this version - they're not blowing their load on the first tune. Typically a 'Sugaree' would start right up, but tonight it's about declaring the love outright without shame or reluctance. A little listless as Brent's Hammond needs to be turned up up on the mix to have any impact. There's a brooding solemnity on "Rooster," not exactly explosive, bu the men are rather straight-faced this evening. Lessons of sobriety continues with "Loser." After a ten beat, we're in for a relieving yet still chill enough not to overwhelm, "BIODTL." "Greatest" is equally as agreeable with some nice dialogue between Brent and Jerry in the early 3's. "Peggy" is always a delight and Jerry's guitar is becoming enlivened by the romantic possibilities. ""Masterpiece" is charming and optimistic. Since the light is emerging from the clouds, this version maintains a sunny and comforting tone throughout. 2nd Set: Now nothing can prevent the gaping smiles unleashed at the Lakefront Center as "Scarlet" has been unleashed. Unfortunately, she's not a beast but she's rather poignant with some cheeky, kitschy Brent tinkles at the five minute mark. After a couple more minutes of muttering it segues into "Fire." It's well-measured but attacked with purpose. The whole show's tone is as if they've been isolated from the hedonistic pleasures of the city - remained in the hotel room and are coming off of another day on the road. Oh, there's plenty of messianiac creatures floating around in the sinking city. The bridge in this "Estimated" (late 4's and 5's) is lucid and boogie boogie. A glitch at 2:44 means that much of the second verse is missing during an otherwise fine "Eyes." Although it's no more choppy than usual, Jerry's incisive scapel-like solos aren't providing exemplary inspriation. It's a mild-mannered 'La Cucaracha' with the morracca's during "Drums" The shakes extend into an increasingly docile "Space" setting up Brent's lullabye, "Take You Home." After that bit of standardness the release is lufted from the pulley sending us on a wily rollercoaster ride through "TOO." Although flying through the air, we never lose our humanity leading us to stop on by and hear August's story by the "Wharf." After his drama we're left wondering, 'what the fuck is wrong with this world?' Well, Bobby's kind enough to educate us with "Throwing." But no matter how shitty the earth is becoming, (and how many shows Phil plays in NYC while playing two shows in LA over the last 36 months) we know that Jerry's love will "NFA." He unleashes a nasty tear my rectum up solo during the 1:30s. Encore - not available?! Shucks cause Susanna Hoffs was HOT 3 stars

This was my first of 25 dead shows and probally my favorite. I was a small town punk from north Louisiana and was blown away by the parking lot scene and

vendors but the true magic started when I got inside. You could feel the energy building and we were about 10 feet away from the band. The boys led us through and great setlist that ended with a smokin Iko and Knockin with the Bros. and Bangles. I then found myself wondering around by the river like a Wharf Rat way past sunrise. There is nothing like a Dead show, especially your first.
