right lol. But it does have it's moments. Brent is solid, they are cruising at home, good song selection, always like a scarlet/fire. Would love to see this show today right? Had a good time with everyone, but it was a bit standard. Not every show is going to rip. And this is one. Just might get some sleep tonight. Still miss Jerry.

Ignore the "Ugh" review and also ignore the breadcrumb
This show was a welcome return to "on keel" status after the dodgy final night at MSG (9/24). Garcia's voice was often diseased in 1988. It's not perfect
...
here, but the reason this show works is because the band is sounding much more relaxed. 1st set: A highlight is "FOTD", which is a little more peppy than many late 80s versions. The drummers keep ALMOST letting it boil over, but ultimately they hold to their strategy, which is a pleasing boom-boom-chuck saunter through the song. During the "Scarlet/Fire" transition, things get very loose and airy. Nobody is pushing ahead of the others. This is what it sounds like when the band has had a week of decent sleep in their own beds, and is ready to get onstage and have some fun again. This source is excellent, as is the Miller source.

day. His voice aint good, but someone could've given him a cane soda, and no one did, I was there. The question then is how much do u pay to get out of going to these things twice? I have yet to get an answer........

from nothing. Cassidy is very good. The beginning of the second set is pretty flat, though, and then the band kinda kicks in again after space. Brent in particular is rocking here, making the Other One crunchy, weird and mad. I almost wonder if Jerry stuck in Uncle Johns here to make up for the first part of the set. Either way, it was a welcome addition. Dew was great, but then again it usually is. I love Brent's work here.

set jer's voice is noticeably worse for the wear. The lack of any transition jam in the scarlet fire is both disappointing and frustrating. In a world where there are almost no bad scarlet fires, this is one that is memorable for Jerry's lack of interest. Back when I had a thousand tapes, this is one I donated to a noob.
This is a very nice show, good sound quality too. I generally agree with the desciption of the show (see further below). The UJB late in the second set

was a nice touch indeed. And since this was the day my second daughter was born, I'd have to give it a solid 5 stars :)

good whereas "Sugaree" is direct, fluid though still laying low. Talk about being elusive and slippery, how about that "Rooster?" Concise and easily flowing. Distracting and definitely unfolksy prog synths by Brent lessen the effect of this "FOTD." However, his boistrous Hammon enlivens a sturdy "Queen Jane." "Tennessee" is a tad clunky buth otherwise on the up and up. "Cassidy" is the first noteworthy tune of the evening, a momentum builder and long mid-section jam. A decent "Ease" allows them to escape the stage critically unscathed. 2nd Set: Sci-fi embellishments not withstanding, this "Victim" sounds more akin to the fetal versions in July/August than some of the higher sophisticated ones of the past couple months. Right into "Scarlet" we head...the song is dryly standard though Jerry and Brent's interaction is admirable in the jammy outro. The playing is quite good but it's as if they're doing so at soundcheck without an audience to satisfy. Of course, the first wah-wah's at "Fire" always rouse. Unfortunately, nothing else really stands out during this average rendition. Both "Drums" and "Space" are over ten minutes each but the latter is solely responsible for the austere dread. Who's moaning about 7:25 in? Hmmmm it's nightttime as evidenced by the seductive midnight pleas in "TOO." Loads of activity, but nothing awe-inspiring. However, everyone's still revving their energies, including some brilliant bombs by Phil at 6:44 as it's time for a "Miracle." It does its job nicely as Jerry elects for the surprising "UJB" call. Decent enough with some synth magic, despite Jerry's raspy voice. Hmmm, and then we're offered a "Dew." Pretty run of the mill though the last couple of minutes build and build though Jerry's guitar is erratically wavering leading to nothing really searing through my bod. Oh, yea...folks, it's "Saturday Night." Cooly confident, grooving on the rims. 2 4/5th stars
