Another grate remaster by Jay Ashley. This a pretty good show but I would say it's the weakest of the three nights with 9-16 being the strongest.

of the other versions, but that might have just been a quirk. The SBDs of this show are really sweet, but the high quality audience gives some feel for the room, which I think is important for any Dead show, but especially so in MSG.
The scene: None of the Rochester family left in the bus by this time in the tour except me. I gave Ohm a ride from Philly to MSG and we camped in a little park in New Jersey on the night between. These were my first (and only) MSG shows and the only time I'd been there before was for a Ringley Bros. circus when I was like 6 years old and my family lived in Connecticut. I started this night at my seat. A couple of guys came up and told me I was in one of their seats. I showed them my stub, then they laughed and the guy said "no, that's my season ticket seat for the Rangers." A hockey and Dead fan - I'd found a friend! So we chatted for a while, but when the show started I made my way out to the hallway for dancing.
The music: They continue a trend that seemed to start in Philly - really strong first sets. Jerry's voice is pretty torn up, but he puts some nice umph into some of the songs, especially Stagger Lee, Foolish Heart, and Morning Dew. LTGTR>Alabama. I don't think I'd heard that one before, but it's a fun opener. Brent does some really nice piano work during Greatest Story and Stagger Lee. Let it Grow jam is really sweet - not high energy but very interactive and well played. Victim didn't go as far into a creepy jam as it did earlier in this tour and is very ho-hum. The jam is Foolish Heart is pretty nice though. Rest of the second set is good, but nothing noteworthy. Strange to end with two Jerry "ballads." Should have been an upbeat Bobby encore.

Garden crowd to a marathon stand. It's been awhile since an "Alabama" so forgive Jerry for goofin on lyrics. An uneventful middling jam takes us to the "Greatest..." It'as not a '72 but the stop/start is effective enough. Jerry comes alive during "Stagger's" climax. Some solid foot-stomping during "Walkin." So far, the music has been competent though not overpowering. "Roses" is lazily beautiful save for those moments (4:25) when Jerry and the band are on a different vocal plain. "Queen Jane" treated us nicely. The ship is sailing clear ahead though its capatin's voice wavers and appears less than cocksure during a suffienctly pokey "Ramble." The men attack "Let" with plenty of ammunition, but never hit it on the heart... 2nd Set: "Box" is an emotionally appropriate appetizer to the grieving theme of the first part of the second. "Victim" is well/concisely performed setting up my first fave version of a soaring (8:00) mature "Foolish" Wow, an emotionally perfect "LLR" upon news of a suicide. Please don't indulge in just the passions of the heart as it's heart-breaking. Wowsers, they're attacking the 'heavy' button tonight..."He's Gone" is strengthening in its steadiness. Ryan Adams must like these shuffles. Not much of a instrumental jam, but some nice harmonizing. "Drums/Space" both feel clipped though the banshees are out and about in the latter. It's shrewd that first rocker should be bluesy though "Miracle" maybe too raucous in spirit considering the set so far...'Fantasy' would have worked. AS would 'Bertha' as a follow-up...but "Gimme" isn't such a bad option...a song of wish-fulfillment replenishment. Fine, toss-off stuff. Ahhh, time for a drummerific "Dew." Not blockbuster but firmly handled. The subdued show ends with your standard "Black Muddy." (Bobby's vibrantly off-key during bridge) 3 1/4 stars

Sound Inside this night was the worst ever at MSG
Must not have had DC going this night becuase all I remember yelling was Turn It Up!!!! And I was just right of the SBD on the floor. So for me this show
...
never had the bang the rest of the run did - just being there a 1. Since we cannot download anymore skip this for the next two nights are far better.
