Subject: OK Show
Subject: Really Good

One of my all time favorites from a wonderful year.
A terrific second set. The first set is typically '82 great as well.
I love the stuff between Scarlet & Fire.
I love the stuff between Estimated & He's Gone and the drums/Brent stuff is great.
Also, one of the most beautiful MELLOW Morning Dews ever.
No need for wailing climaxes...nice vocals & subdued moody playing.
love it - thank you
Subject: A Little Background on this Recording
This is the first Dead show I ever recorded; I'd just gotten the Sony TC-D5M and Sony 220T mics a few months before and had recorded a few other bands with it. I brought the D5 in to the Providence Civic Center strapped to my back; I asked my friends if it was obvious and the woman who a decade later would become my wife said "no, not at all!" She later told me I looked like the hunchback of Notre Dame...
Somehow I got the deck in (others were getting busted left and right) and went to my seat - 4th row, right on the isle between the right and center seats...awesome, spitting distance from Brent! Four songs into the first set they busted me - took the tape and my batteries. So I put the deck away and grooved to the rest of the set. At the break I went to see a friend of mine who was sitting in the 13th row center with a bunch of friends of the band and told him what happened. I said "got any advice?" He said "well, why don't you go and ask someone at the board if they have an extra set of batteries?" "OK". So I walked over to the board, asked them if they had an extra pair of D-cells and they said "well, we used these last night - maybe they'll work for you. Here you go!" I was back in business! I told my friend his idea worked and he said "let's switch seats - you need the best seats possible for this show - it's cooking!" So I took his seat, and stoically held those mics tight and pointed at the speakers as best I could for the whole second set and encore.
