Strange show fondly remembered
We drove a thousand miles from Memphis to Phlly. A sick dude vomited down the back of my jacket before the first show. And then to hear Jerry's croak of
...
a voice...but we LOVED it. Jerry was such a pro this night, singing his heart out, adjusting his harmonies as need be, sometimes shouting the words ("they MADE the right connection"). It's one of my favorites, mostly because of weirdness of hearing Jerry's sick rattle of a voice. Worth the trip and even being vomited on (ruined my Big Smith, man!).

Playing good, singing not so much
Well you gotta hand it to Jer, his playing never suffers. But damn, in the audience from where I stand, you start to hear Dupree's and start thinking
...
about all the singing coming up, and just start thinking, why in the hell would they pick that song? Tonight should have been a mostly Bob and Brent night. I watched the next night's video on YouTube. They open with Do it in the Road, with Phil and Brent. Jer sounds 1 slight notch better than tonight. The video shows him looking in poor form at this point, as I believe he is pretty much living as a recluse. About the only song that could fit any of this is of course, my personal favorite, Wharf Rat. His voice would've made that one sound right. Not Fade Away was laughable.

low point
I count this one as one of the worst shows I saw in the 80s and 90s, and that's saying something. It doesn't sound any better on tape. They just 'failed

to occur' here. 4/7/85, the next night, was one of the best of the year, though... so page down.

Saw all three nights in Philly..and yes, this was the worst night out of the three..This was dance concert run at the Spectrum..no seats on the floor!
...
So the first in, could go right up front and smack dab in front of Jerry I stood..He was struggling with his vocals, but if you listen to his guitar playing,he was still able to rip it..Out of over 200 shows I saw, I was only front row a couple times..You remember these times well..no matter how bad the band was playing..Watching Jerry's fingers move up and down those strings after ingesting a couple Red gells..WELL..let's say I really enjoyed myself..The Philly faithful have a good time no matter what!!!!!!!! The show is what it is..I'm not going to over think this one..the sound quality is pretty good and you judge what you hear..Forever Grateful>Forever Dead

have a heart
hey I was at almost all of the northeast show on this tour. Jerry's playing was spectacular the whole tour. Fact is, he could've dropped dead at any
...
moment, and we all knew it. We talked about it out in the audience. He was horribly overweight, smoked too much, and his diabetes were not being controlled, as his collapse the following year proved. I think it really bothered him that he couldn't sing, I used to watch him shake his head mournfully after butchering lines of songs. But he kept going at it, because the music mattered more than how good he sounded. Anyway, I cut my teeth on the Dead in the 80's and thought they were great then. Really, I almost never listen to anything past 1978 anymore. They were flat and in a rut during the whole period, if you look at their career as a whole. Two things went wrong with the band this decade. 1)Cocaine 2)Brent Mydland God bless, him, as he's passed on, but I never liked his playing, even before I heard much from the 70's. He's too straightforward, unimaginative. Like putting Boz Scaggs in the Allman Brothers, or worse, Johnny Cash in the Miles Davis Quartet. Really, they became a hard-rocking anthem band with him in tow, and yes, I do blame him for it. Gone were the meandering mind trips of the 70's. Everything was immediate gratification. Anyway, I rant too long. Apologies all around. This show? Oh yeah, I was there. Mescaline helped it a lot. Jerry's vocals hardly mattered much if you were there. We partied. As for debating how good the show was...eh. I'll be listening to Europe '72 while y'all fight it out.

YIKES!!!!
This show features the most brutal vocals from Jerry I've ever heard. He actually sounds like he's dying from pneumonia. It's really hard to listen through
...
but fortunately he plays his guitar magnificently. The show starts off innocently enough with a very nice Stranger but something in the background sounds amiss. Unfortunately we soon find out it's Jerry's croaking voice. The jam is extended and intense and this is a great version. The nightmare begins with TLEO and the vocals are just godawful. Jerry's voice is absolutely offensive in Dupree's. His voice is brutal and cracking on almost every note. It's truly hard to listen to. I can't understand why he would continue to sing after this disaster. This continues the rest of the evening but he makes up for the vocals with some truly inspiring playing. His leads are fierce in pretty much every song and this is the saving grace of this performance. The second set s very slight improvement. TheChina>Rider features a nice transition jam but again the vocals! Garcia murders the headlight line but tries to growl it out anyway. It sounds pathetic. The Playin' is one of the highlights of the set. The jam is jazzy and spaced out but the transition into Uncle John's is clunky. Once they segue however this is a pretty decent version. Aside from an amazing Other One the post Space jam is mediocre. If Jerry's voice wasn't such a disaster this could be a great show. His soloing is excellent but unfortunately the voice is tough to get by.

John's? They did this night. The band was flat and the versions were poorly played. It was like the band was tired and went through the motions. One of the few times I felt they weren't playing as though it was their last show. The following 2 nights were much better. But none of the 3 compared to the insanity at Nassau Coliseum the week before... I'll add a star to this download for the sound quality (that'll make it a 2)

This is a very underrated show. I went to all three nights and this night was very well played. The setlist was very predictable and doesn't look as nice

as the next two nights but give it a chance. There is a killer little jam they do right before drumz that I think of as a "spooky forest jam"(I know, but you had to be there). After this show we couldn't wait for the next nights as they used up a few of the "common songs".
